The Femmes performed this in a club in Pittsburgh, 1984. Looked the same. When they came out, Gano didn't have a guitar at first and Brian had a stand-up bass, DeLorenzo had that 3-piece stand-up kit played with brushes and I thought is this a band? What do they do, mime? But it was so tight. Country Death Song shocked us but it's just like an old Cash or Tom Waits tune about going crazy and killing. It was so cool as cool as dry ice or something.
professional dj here.. i'd get em two steppin at a wedding to Merle Haggard and George Jones and drop this little buscuit in to check and see if they were really listening.. they shock and awe when they realized what was happening was f#@kin GOLDEN !
Me too Dennis, Ptown here. Only regret is we didn't have cell phones back then. Would love to have captured shows like this and all my fun times down at the oceanfront!
This is an amazing performance of an amazing song from an amazing album. I need to know where this concert footage comes from so I can get it all! Also, Gordon Gano's vocal abilities and absurd abilities to change tone completely shock me every time I hear a song like Blister in the Sun and then something like What You Really Mean.
Saw them at Duke Ellington Ballroom in Dekalb Illinois in 1989 or 90. Then twice at Tipitina's in New Orleans, and once at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans (opening for the B-52s of all things.)
it is a 'muder ballad', nick cave has an entire album of them. from wikipedia: "Murder ballads make up a notable portion of traditional ballads, many of which originated in Scandinavia, England, and lowland Scotland in the premodern era"
I suppose that doesn't answer "why" exactly, but to point out that this is a question that should be directed at a broad subgenre of music and oral tradition that dates back centuries. because it's fun? people like dark things because life is a fucking horror show that nobody escapes alive? I don't know man
I love this live show, but it is during the period where Brian didn't have his Earthwood, and the Martin just could never touch the pure huge tone of the Ernie Ball.
He actually wrote it in high school, he wrote each verse in different periods, it’s not based off a true story but things like this have happened in the past
My bf made the mistake if playing this with the 8 year old daughter within earshot. He and i were belting it out in the kitchen, only to find the poor girl crying in living room
This song is a great addition to the pantheon of murder songs that exists in American music. A personal favorite.
America's always been good at that.
Echoes of Bob Dylan's The Ballad of Hollis Brown - eerie, yet mesmerizing
Nick Cave alone shows Aussies have us beat tho...
Great Work. I started it. Title by you. This and blind melon skinned to start.
I thought they were from Canada ?
When I listen to the Femmes, my neighbors do too
😂😂😂
3:43 As it should be.
most underrated song of all time
Agreed to the max.
Loved it since release - weird thing for a 15 yr old girl to love back then, ha-ha
@@dean9325 Same here!
underrated by ... whom?
This and Never Tell. And really the whole album. Much more interesting than their first album (which is great, just not as great as this one).

Dale Emery johnny cash Tom waits and the violent femmes...is perfect. Maybe throw in hank III?
I'd pay double for that show.
It's not just about "going crazy and killing" - it's about rural poverty and isolation. There are a lot of "old time country" death songs.

I was at this very concert in norfolk Va's boathouse. Great show!! Best band ever!

Was lucky enough to see them live twice.
So did I. Amazing show. Saw them again in 2018-my daughter surprised me w tix. So good! Still an awesome show.
Saw them at Duke Ellington Ballroom in Dekalb Illinois in 1989 or 90. Then twice at Tipitina's in New Orleans, and once at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans (opening for the B-52s of all things.)
I saw them in 2021 they still hit exactly the same.
Best country song ever
Just made my kids listen to this. HAHAHAHA
Seriously though, hidden gem.
😂😂😂
this song is a whole nother level of deep
Im so happy i was able to see them live way back then in 87. Fav song about killing children
Just made my "Fucked up love" playlist, thanks.
One of their best!
Maravillosa banda de fusión, (hay tantos elementos musicales que cada uno tiene que sentirlos).
Such a powerful song.
Aug, 7.2024 I was listening to this on a cassette . in my car. I copied from a friend. In my car!!! Booya babies
Nothing to eat, and nothing to drink.
One of the more fucked up songs of my generation. With a wife and daughter I enjoy sharing this to make humans question my sanity. LOL
It's the lullaby my niece wasnt a fan off....BUT I WAS....🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, living is better
All respect. A.
It all adds up
3:23 - head-banging to the Femmes?!?
lol, the times……
Foookin genius.
The modern Folsum prison blues.
Marty Howe this was a dust bowl song.
he wrote this in highschool studyhall if i remember right
He wore that shirt for comfort.
she was screaming as she fell but I never heard her hit
Love this song but sometimes I just have to ask...why?
Shawn Gumm ? Why ? Chris W probably listened to this
Why not??

Same reason why crime and punishment was written
I love this live show, but it is during the period where Brian didn't have his Earthwood, and the Martin just could never touch the pure huge tone of the Ernie Ball.
Love this song!!! Just wonder what led to it? Is there a story it is based on or something? Or did he just come up with it? Questions....
He actually wrote it in high school, he wrote each verse in different periods, it’s not based off a true story but things like this have happened in the past
It’s a murder ballad.
Based on a true story, isn't it? A band played this at a hallowe'en dance many moons ago.
I can imagine Fontaines DC covering this.
Fucking awsome 😊
Pretty violent, Femmes
Hipnosis 🎸🎼🖤
My bf made the mistake if playing this with the 8 year old daughter within earshot. He and i were belting it out in the kitchen, only to find the poor girl crying in living room
Poor thing still has bad dreams at 10
But what a great fuking song
HAHA aww
AWE JEEZ
HOPE SHE FEELS BETTER
GLAD SHE’S GOT SOME GREAT MUSIC WITH HER THOUGH!
Does this remind anybody else of Green on Red (the band)?

Its halloween night and it has 666 likes ...if i hit like it goes to 667 ...ill leave it alone for tonight...
fun song
Darkestsong ever
Sick bastard lyrics.
Hell yeah
Chris Watts theme song
Well that was a bit dark
That’s one of the many things that makes it so brilliant
He's not aged as well as Cash probably should have got a new lady instead of turning to pringles.
Gordon, I kiss you goodnight, I kiss you...
