    I saw someone else summarize season 2 as Carmy helping everybody on his team but forgetting to help himself. And I don't think it's that he and Donna are "two sides of the same coin," it's that he's literally inherited her anxiety and her mental illness, just like Mikey did.
    And Sydney staring at the ticket thing was essentially her expecting the other shoe to drop (thinking about how she fucked up the pre-order system in season 1, episode 7), which is the exact problem Carmy has too.
    Anyway, thank you two for reacting to this so quickly! Show of the year for me so far.

      When it came to Donna, Natalie was the one who passive-aggressively confronted her but never truly clashed with her, which is why she is very managerial but tries not to be rude or confrontational.
      Michael was the one who tried to intervene and be strong for his siblings, which I believe is why he couldn't handle the pressure anymore (he did off himself after all), because he had been doing it his entire life.
      Carmy was the one who tried keep quiet and be good so she wouldn't have a reason to snap at him, which is why he is such a perfectionist and so obsessed with his work in an unhealthy way, he keeps trying to meet this insane standard that he set for himself. Richie and Syd were doing well but Carmy needed to be there because perfectionists don't need things to work perfectly, perfectionists need things to be perfect in their own way, so they will always find something wrong in other people's work. That is Carmy's problem, he sees everyone else as the enemy, like they're not good enough even when things are working fine

    • @GuineaPigEveryday
      @GuineaPigEveryday Рік тому +2

      @@pabloc8808 damn I haven't heard it described that way before how they have all these different reactions but that's so accurate for abusive parents like this, every sibling does their best to respond to such overwhelming stress and pressure and toxicity. But also Michael does not see everyone else as the enemy at all??? He hates himself, he thinks he's worthless, he thinks at the end that he let everyone else down by being with Claire. Perfectionists don't hate others as much as they hate themselves so I really don't understand that interpretation. Also why the hell people defend Richie so much but have no sympathy for how fucking insanely traumatised the Berzatto siblings were. I mean idk in my experience most kids do have that fight, flight, freeze or fawn response. When every single interaction with ur parent is walking on eggshells, sometimes you just try your damn best to be the perfect child, perfectly obedient, handle all of their hurling insults and abuse with a passive smile, and then even when ur perfect they still abuse you, that's one way perfectionists can be born. I don't fucking blame Michael for any of that, i mean jesus ive been in the exact same situation, and then perfectionists like that usually end up hating themselves and jeopardising their own happiness.

    • @pabloc8808
      @pabloc8808 Рік тому

      @@GuineaPigEveryday I never said I blame Michael or that he saw anyone as the enemy, I said CARMY does, he says that at the Al-Anon meeting in the season 1 finale. As for Michael, he tried to be the protector, to be strong for Nat and Carmy and even for their mom, but that pressure can be too much for a person, because when you're busy helping everyone there's a huge chance you won't help yourself. In season one Richie says something, on why he didn't try to pull Michael away from his addiction: "he was Mikey Bear, he was gonna get through it". Everyone thought Michael was strong for himself, because he was strong for others, but it was the opposite, he let himself go and ended up committing suicide.
      As for perfectionists, they hate themselves, but when put in a position of power they can very much channel that against others. However, that's not the only reason Carmy blows up at his staff: he blows up at them because the restaurant is him, it's his life. It has to be perfect, because he needs to be the best ("I'm a fucking psycho, that is why I am the best" "I don't need to provide amusement or enjoyment, I don't need to receive any amusement or enjoyment") and because, like he said at the Al-Anon meeting, fixing the restaurant was his way of "fixing" what happened between him and Michael. So when things do go as planned, when it doesn't go according to his vision of perfection, of what The Bear should be, he takes it out on others.
      I understand I wrote a rather long paragraph in my original comment, and I don't mean to come off as rude, but please read it again, I feel like you may have misinterpreted what I said and that prompted your comment

      My theory is that the family don’t like him because he’s nice. None of them know how to handle someone so genuinely nice and stable, because they were all raised in chaos, dysfunction, and are all assholes. And that’s exactly why Natalie loves him and married him. Notice that she hated being in the restaurant until everyone started healing and working to better themselves. She’s the only Bear to realize she needed to seek stability instead of continuing the cycle.

      Like SpySkater said, it most likely is because the Berzatto family doesnt know how to show affection in a healthy manner so they instinctively reject someone who does cause they feel weird.
      To that I add that Petey is just one of those people that are just so lucky/spoiled that they end up growing up to be extremely pure, simple-minded naive people. Im sure we've all met some in our lives, they're easy to make fun of because of their child-like naiveté (like Cicero and Richie do) or just politely avoid (like Carmy does) because they're not particularly funny, smart or interesting. But that of course does not mean that they're not good souls. I loved how this ep used Petey's character like that.

    Sydney hearing that ticket printer continuously going off is parallel to Carmy seeing all those horrible things in S1 on his ticket printer ("off yourself", "you're worthless", etc) and the throwing up is something Carmen said he did EVERY night in New York. Next season (if we get one) will be about Sydney realising she has to keep the standard and fight for a star - even to the detriment of her health. She's already someone anxious and now the restaurant will probably be awkward af because Richie and Carmen are mad at each other so she will have to (maybe) whether the storm alone or maybe with Tina and Nat.
    Seeing Nat, Tina, Richie, Marcus and Sydney grow as well as the rest of the staff was so beautiful to watch but having to see Carmy stop therapy and ignore anything that isn't in the bubble he created for himself with Claire and thus regressing was sad. The Bear 'opened' without two of the three Bears present (Mikey and Carm), only Nat who HATED the restaurant last season was the only Berzatto present for its building and opening.
    The relationship development between Nat/Sydney as well as Tina/Sydney was one of my favourite parts of the season. One character who sabotaged Sydney for half of the first season and a recurring character who didn't even have scenes with Sydney becoming her closest work relatonships? That's fire chef.

      Carmy can easily turn into a villian with what we've seen so far in season 3. Giving up on love to pursue his dream/obligation to his family has to have a toll.

    Carmy and Donna aren't the same. Carmy has extreme anxiety from his traumatic upbringing and the chaos that is his family. Donna seems like she has mental health issues which caused her to drink too much and not be the kind of mother she needed to be for her kids. It's a shame that people are automatically assuming Sydney was purposely ignoring Marcus, when the argument could be made that she was so focused and trying to navigate the chaos, that she truly didn't hear him. I’ve said once and i’ll say it again, This show isn’t showing you that you have to sacrifice everything to achieve greatness. It’s showing you the downfall of that mentally and how you need to set yourself straight to achieve greatness. Carmy and by the extension unc is wrong and I think they’re going to explore that in season 3.
    You bring up gordon ramsey yet Gordon ramsay at Carmy’s age was already married and set to have kids WHILE on track to achieving his greatness. He didn’t have to do the type up sacrifices Carmy is ranting about and more often that not it leads to failure more than anything because you end up losing yourself and falling apart without even achieving said greatness.

    I agree with the whole Marcus’ attachment thing. They made it a point to show how attentive he is with his mother. How much he worried about leaving her. I see the same thing with Sydney. He is not capable of putting the small hiccup aside and keeps trying to resolve it when he should be focused on finishing service. If we are to assume his mother has passed away, he is going to be a MESS season 3. I love Marcus and would love for them to focus more on his emotional-growth journey.

  • @Duganator
    @Duganator Рік тому +25

    In defense of Marcus, he spent this whole episode calling out to Sydney for info he needed for his job. It's not the most prominent sound in the scene, but you will probably hear it on a rewatch.
    "Hey Syd, I need a cannoli all day"
    "Hey Sydney, I need a bread all day."
    "Chef Sydney, I need an all day."
    And instead of responding to him, she ignored it every single time. Then when he came over to assist, he calmly & quietly asked her what is up because HER behavior is the one that is causing issues. Instead of calling back answers for him, she continues to ignore his info requests until finally he comes over and lets her have it. A full volume blow up at her was not helpful, but neither was her treatment of him throughout this episode. And yet, at the end, he is the one to extend the olive branch to her with the Josh thing. The only thing that changed between these two characters from previous episodes to now is Marcus asking her what he asked. The only person whose behavior changed was Syd's.
    Both of them flirted with each other for the last 2 seasons. Syd called Marcus in Copenhagen. She made the callback with the olive oil to the comment he made in S1 when she cooked for him at her apartment. There was give and take between them.
    I agree with the idea of him trying to clear the air. He can clearly tell something is up & is trying to get it out of the way because whatever it is is impacting both their abilities to do their jobs.

    I think ebraheim sabatical and story line was more of a contrast/ spin-offf from tina's story. To show how one person adapted and the other didn't IMO. Also, ebraheim is in charge of the OGs so he doesn't really have a big role in the high-end part of the restaurant that was showcased in this episode.

    What I took from this episode is Carmy is a self-saboteur. He sabotaged himself in the restaurant and with Claire. There was no reason for him not to ignore Claire’s call or even better, answer and tell her he had work he needed to do and then call the fridge guy. I don’t believe the ultimatum here. Maybe he can’t be in a relationship now, but he needs what Claire brings outside of the restaurant. He NEEDS something outside of that restaurant. He needs what Natalie found in Pete. And I was so happy when Richie called him out on being like his mom. He needs to sit with it.

    Carmy leaning into his fears and self-doubt about his capacity to uphold his end of a relationship and a woman he loves being there to hear it as an unvarnished truth rather than a moment in time is so tragic in like the greek, classical sense of the word. So impressed with this show.
    Also, as far as Syd throwing up, in S1 we see her take omeprazole, which is the generic name for Prilosec, a proton pump inhibitor that's used to treat acid reflux and GERD. This scene felt very true-to-life for me, because I got really bad acid reflux working in restaurants from the stress and irregular meal times, and the way it makes you vomit is way more routine and matter-of-fact than you'd think. It's hard to describe, but it almost feels more like a physical gag reflex than a real puke situation like food poisoning where your body tries as hard as possible to get every little bit of your stomach contents out. Not to get too too graphic, but I can't tell you how many times I went to the bathroom to throw up, wiped off the sweat, swished out my mouth with some water and the listerine I kept around for exactly that purpose and got back on the floor to go to work. So real that Syd would get caught doing that and try to play it off as no big deal

    Sidney came through the whole season 2, very insane how they all work better as soon as Carm was out of the picture.
    Pete is really supporting since s1 but i realized in the flashback episode how he doesn’t care taking shit from everyone as long as he is with Sugar.
    Marcus and Syd situation was a friendship but Marcus got his feelings hurt when she let him down, is a little stereotypical the men and women cant be just friend but i glad that is not going to affect them going after cause they are clear now.

    😡♂️ when this season premiered I had a random thought that wouldn't go away, Carmen reminded me so much of Don Draper in Mad Men. A little bit with the cockiness but moreso because he has a career where he is considered the best. Also because he has everything around him that he needs but he doesn't see it and doesn't feel complete. In the end I do believe Carmen will walk away from the culinary world. But it's up to him to determine if he'll be kicked out from self-destruction, madness, or walking into a new stage of his life that's healthier for him.

    Meh. Claire pushed past yet another clear boundary: "Don't go back there." She goes back there anyway and hears something she wasn't meant to hear.
    Its a call back to Carmy giving her the wrong number and she ignored that boundary too.
    I don't have much sympathy for her.
    I don't think Carmy is the same as Donna, Carmy wants so badly to please people vs Donna is so deep in her trauma and addiction that she doesn't really care who she hurts.
    Carmy knew from the beginning that he didn't have time for Claire and because he wanted to please Claire and everyone else who wanted him "to be happy" that he didn't bother to protect his own interests and desires.
    Also boo on Richie for pressuring Carmy to go out there to see Claire before he was ready! While out there he saw who he thought was his old boss and started the whole spiral downward.
    No boundaries!

I also wonder if she forces herself on Carmy BECAUSE he's a Michelin star chef. Carmy needs to speak up and tell her now is not a good time for relationship or offer just a friendship. He needs to go back to the support group and take everything one day at a time.
