I am not an expert on Augustine. What I don't understand about Augustine is how he can reach such a high place of authority as a Bishop in Hippo and not have any correction along the way. As I understand Augustine's life he was trained by Ambrose in Milan and he had to have many people around him who were also leaders in the church. How can Augustine misinterpret Romans 5:12 to mean imputed guilt and privation when that interpretation cannot be supported by the entire context of the book of Romans. Right in vs 14 two verses down from vs 12 Paul says that "sin reigned in death." Paul says in Ch 6 to "not let sin reign in your MORTAL BODY". Paul then says in Romans 7 that his struggle with sin is the result of his body which is infected by death. Paul also states in 1 Cor 15:56 that "the sting of death is sin". Then Paul connects the resurrection to justification, "that Christ was raised for our justification Ro. 4:24. So how can Augustine miss the whole context and meaning of Romans, Hebrews, and other passages which connect the fall with mortality? Causing nature to rebel against the freedom of the person? Is the whole Western church totally ignorant of Orthodoxy? Something got really disconnected because people were not being trained correctly to hold such lofty theological positions. All this confusion through history makes one focus on the central importance of training people well before they assume positions of leadership. You could say that Augustine was a Protestant. Because he interpreted the Bible apart from a right connection to proper traditions. Augustine's phronema was bad.
So true. Something I got completely baffled with is when Jerome said to Augustine (I paraphrase here): “Your new presentation of the Church’s teaching have gone through the whole world and have been accepted and loved by all.” < what Jerome? Lol
Randy Churchill You know it’s interesting that the Rudder says his works were changed by the Latins. But even if this is wrong and his incorrect theology is genuinely his, I’ve heard it said that he is recognised as a saint for his holiness, and he has performed miracles also.
Solilska The Rudder is a book containing the canons of the apostles, and the canons of the ecumenical and some smaller level (local) councils, and the canons of some Fathers. Included also is interpretation of these canons as well as St Nikodimos of Mount Athos’ own commentary. Lastly, there are instructions on marriage.
Hey Jay, have you ever heard of a unitarian or oneness use the law of transitive identity to try and debunk the Trinity? I've never encountered this view and not sure if it's tied into ADS? Wondering how to best counter this argument.
Vintage Jay with good 80's tunes in the background. Nice.
This is both interesting and useful.

@@dikaioskyrios The Reformation is based on Augutine. That's why Protestants can't understand Orthodoxy. But Augustine is still a saint? Go figure.

@@dikaioskyrios I've heard people mention the Rudder a few times lately, I have no idea what it is. Educate me?
