Best first level ever. I have played this one countless times over the years, can practically do it with my eyes closed, and it's still a pleasure everytime.

Nice watching your gameplay video walkthroughs of Tomb raider 2 & 3 brings back many memories. Great games of that era.

    Very good play as usual!
    Seen all videos and add-on.
100%, careful, logical, with intent to show how it would have been in reality. Kudos to you!
Though you should have spared soldiers in Pacific Islands. They're supposed to be at least neutral if not friendly.

I only played TR3 once on my PlayStation. I gotten rid of console years ago along with the games. I was able to replay TR1 and TR2 on my iPhone and IPad when they were available on the App Store.

    1. TR3 (together with TRLA) is my most favourite (and the best, IMHO) entry in the whole TR franchise.
    2. I'm glad this walkthrough of yours does not feel like a speed-run, like many others do.
    3. Thumbs up, lady :-)

11:52-12:04... And thus, the uneven tiles became a thing (along with other elements).
18:34-19:04... Too bad the flare time was decreased by 30 seconds after the 2nd game (flares lasted 60 seconds).
    ----------
Aside from the camera angles not being coded properly (pickup animation, climbing/wall climbing, lever pulling, block pushing/pulling, et cetera), items not displaying after picking them up (displayed in the demo version) is one of the reasons why I consider this game to be the hardest out of the others in the 1st era. One explanation: 'new' developers, rather than 'old' developers (they needed more than 1 year to work on another game after the 2nd one, due to popular demand). The 'new' developers probably assumed the items displaying would have been too easy (as with unlimited saving anywhere and anytime in the PlayStation version). To add on to the difficulty, the game is filled with long levels ('new' developers probably assumed that people wanted more challenging and open areas, as a response to the 2nd game being too easy).
Anyone who played this game, whether it was their first game or not, definitely had it hard (even if it was not right away), and may have even stopped playing halfway after the 1st level due to it being open and quite complexed. Not as unfriendly as the 1st level in the 2nd game, but still, complexed design can be enough to stop a player from playing this game.
What the 'new' developers were thinking is beyond me.

Tomb Raider 3 is certainly the hardest of the old games, but it didn't frustrate me to a heavy degree like 2 did.

I should start by detailing my issues with 3's difficulty. Oddly, my problem wasn't that it was unforgiving rather it was how inconsistent it can be. I played Nevada after India and the former was easier due to the more straightforward design. I then played London afterwards which was insane. Thames Wharf is a stage I'll never forget due to how stupidly obtuse it is at first glance. I think this was the first level since Temple Ruins that I would very frequently start from scratch to be able to beat a portion as quickly as possible before I use a save crystal at a point where I'm officially stuck. Due to my curiosity though, I somehow manage to beat the level without going through the path that was blocked off from the fire. Aldwych I had to use a guide for although that was mainly due to not enjoying the level and wanting to get it over with, and Lud's Gate I manage to do comfortably even though the underwater portion annoyed me quite a bit. South Pacific was easier, but there was a few cheap enemy spots and the kayak was hard to get a grasp on. Then there was Antarctica which was pretty cryptic here and there and had some annoying trial and error. Sometimes the game is hard, other times it is brutal.
That being said, only once or twice every few levels did I get frustrated. As unforgiving as the game is, a lot of it feels like I can overcome it with some practice without losing too much health let alone having to save frequently. Going back to the platforming and exploration of the first game as opposed to overbearing the player with shooting in the second was a step in the right direction. It doesn't feel like I'm in monotonous and cheap combat, let alone being forced to save every sixty seconds, instead there's a stronger focus on allowing me to observe the environment and take my time to try and figure out the right way forward. Bringing back the save crystals from the first game did make me question if this was going to work, but the reasonable amount that's cleverly spaced out combined with the difficulty being high does reinforce into my brain when is the right time to save which did its job on keeping me reminded of having to save here and there. I like unlimited saves but I usually forget to save a lot of the time since there's nothing really reminding me when is the appropriate time. The enemy placement is also an improvement. They don't hide in corners as much waiting to ambush, which was especially frustrating when having to put up with flamethrowers in the second game.
3's less straightforward design admittedly isn't going to be for everyone, this is one part of 2's difficulty and design that I prefer. However, what's contained in 2's design I found to be artificial and poor a lot of the time, whereas 3 feels more genuine and less dated. I'm not sure if I'm being generous on 3, but that's mainly because I went into it with low expectations after feeling very unsatisfied with 2, but the game genuinely surprised me and made me interested in checking out the rest of the Core Design games. Tomb Raider 3 I wouldn't say is the best one critically as I do prefer the more consistent and accessible design of the original, but the sheer variety (variety was a major step up and another reason why it didn't frustrate me much) and high replay value makes this my favourite in the series so far.

    • @ElectroTherapyFTSoul
      @ElectroTherapyFTSoul 6 років тому

There is a patch you can download that fixes widescreen mode for TR 2 and 3 (and I believe 4 and 5 but I haven't played those yet.) All of the textures and models, including Lara, are squeezed back to proper scale. It doesn't quite work for the sky because those textures seem to be generated differently. Any level with a moon will still have an oval moon instead of circular.
