For some perspective - my mum used to tell me during the horrible days of "the troubles" in Derry, notably 1969-1974, she along with my grandparents used to drive over the border and spend weekends in the seaside town of Buncrana, 20 miles from Derry. She said when they went over the border it was like going into a different universe. Leaving behind bombs, bullets, and coming into a peaceful and traditional seaside town. It was much needed for them.

Not surprised john. When going from Glasgow to Donegal I couldn't,t get through " the North" quick enough! In fairness though we never experienced any trouble at all.

Many of the Provisional IRA members on the run went to Buncrana too.

@@gerardcoyle3051 that was my experience too. I have been to the north since peace returned there and I have enjoyed my visits. I went to Derry last week and it was great.

The brief clip of the couple leaving the Carrigart Hotel and the interior of Griffin's shop brings back so many happy holiday memories spent there as a child. I,ve spent most of my holidays there .My mother Eileen Gallagher later Coyle was from the village.

Was it hard getting in there? My grandmother used leave Greenock in 60s to travel to Mayo, though my grandad was from the Lettermacward, Donegal. My cousin said the journey felt like riding a camel to Timbuktu.

It's 1963 at the very earliest...

What few cars are seen look to be more modern than 1950. That Ford Consul looks to be a mark 2 made between 1956 and 1962. Still an interesting video. One might ask what was the purpose of the border given the hundreds of different crossing points. Still it gave a man a job!

It was two different territories that is why there was a border. Not all of the Canadian and US border is manned.

Hi, My name is Ciaran Davis, I am putting together a short film about the Irish in Coventry and was wondering if I could use some of this footage. Are you the copyright holder?
    Kind regards

This is a clip from a film the BFI ( British Film Institute ) posted on their site Ciaran. You can view it ( and many others ) here = player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-highways-of-ulster-1950-online

0:48 - If they don't sort this Brexit mess out, these signs could be returning VERY soon in 2019.

Joke’s on you as these scenes never did, even after 2019.

This is a great video, but whoever wrote the subtitles made an awful mess of it. It's nice though to look back on how things were when we were growing up.

Well, considering the "subtitles" are automatically generated by youtube I thing they are amazingly close to what was said. I didn't notice a mistake until the point in the video were he mentions Carrigart ...and that is over a minute and a half into the video! :)
