One use of a playmat that I haven't seen mentioned, and the primary reason I bought a playmat, is that it's easier to pick cards up off a playmat than it is to pick them off a table. Without a playmat I find it difficult to pick cards up off a table and I feel like I'm risking damaging the cards. With a playmat I can pick cards up with ease.

I recommend a tube protecter that wraps around your tube to protect it while it protects your mat which protects your sleeves which protects your cards.

If you go to a professional magician's shop, you can get close-up pads. These are like playmats, but thicker and larger, with a softer foam backing so your fingers can get up under the cards. Parlor magicians use these to make sure they can consistently lift cards for sleight-of-hand tricks, and they're a hell of a lot better than anything you can get at an LGS.

I'd also note that I recently got a playmat at GP Sacramento, and compared to my inked playmat I bought not very long ago, it is fairly thick in comparison to their inked playmat counterparts. This is really nice for someone like me with really meaty fingers that has a hard time picking up cards (and is one of the primary reasons that I use playmats)

Hi, Im new to Magic and started playing a few months ago. I only have two decks and just watched your video about buying a pre-made commander deck which led me here to playing mats. I have a play-mat but I don't know if it machine washable because there is no tags. I want to save points I get from my hobby shop so i can get a better mat but I like my plain one colored one. I love your videos too and kinda wish you were my English teacher/professor in high school/college.

Professor, I have bought a dragon shield mat, it came out of the box in perfect condition, no wrinkles, no imperfections, nothing wrong with the quality of it. The only issue with it I have is that one you've rolled it up a few times, when you roll it up it starts to try and open out, it can be easily fixed with a mat tubes, and for a person of my size being broad shouldered and quite the perfectionist for space, this mat is the perfect size, the tables we use at my local card shop is just perfect to fit two of these, one for each player.

I got a great deal on my playmat. I went to my first prerelease (for 2015, just last week!) and they had Ultra Pro mats for 10 dollars. Got a nice Angel one to match my choice of White for the pre-release. I really like using one now.

I actually feel the dragon shield ones are best for a few reasons that you actually said they where bad for haha.
    1. the large size is great the ultrapro ones are way to small for me i cant fit my game onto it wether im playing edh or a 60 card format. theres just not enough space on the ultrapro ones i often have to put cards on the table next to them
    2. i like simple art on my playmats that doesnt destract.
    3. the rolled up pr wrinkled feel yours had isnt a universal thing i have 2 and both came out flat

I actually have found those generic playmats on eBay to be quite fine. So far, I have not noticed significant wear, they are nice and big, and seem easy to keep clean. I personally find the artwork on the ultra pro playmats to look cool but prefer a plain black background to play on. I love this channel though. Most MTG channels just have people opening booster boxes or packs, which is neat enough to see the cards I guess, but beyond that, pointless. I actually learn good information here. Keep it up, professor!

Another great thing not mentioned in the video about inked playmats is that they come in a durable, reusable tube that protects your mat, alleviating having to by a monster/UP tube. Also the old KB spellground mats can run upwards of $200-$300 dollars for the old two player mats. Even the single player mats are expensive. Good to hear that they will be coming out with more!

Well, in a situation that I have, a tube makes sense for keeping my playmat in good condition, because when I go to school, I keep my mat in my backpack with my books, and it can get cramped in there, and while constantly pulling out books and putting them back in, the mat unravels, twists around, and can even be squished to the bottom when I toss a textbook in there. The tube can prevent unraveling and stop the playmat from being pushed around.

If you can afford the $200-$300 for the originals(from 94), it's worth every penny, and if you only want to spend the $30-$60 for new mats, they are quite nice as well. I used to own a crimson(red) mat, and the new seasons line are quite nice as well.

Would it be possible for you to do a review on playmat tubes? In the TCG community I'm part of, they're pretty standard, and used as much for storage and transport as they are for protection. That being said, I've had more than one playmat tube crack on me before, and I've seen some made of thicker or thinner plastic, not to mention to variety of one or two openings. I know Ultra Pro, Monster, and RFG all make some, but the info I get about the differences tends to be rather scattered.

I actually was surprised that you didnt go over homemade playmats. many players are either talented with a sewing machine, or have leftover place settings their grandmothers may have made them. I use one myself. The only issue i have with it is that its a tad small, especially for commander gameplay. But thats easily fixable. Other than that, every time i pull it out, i get a ton of compliments (then again it has pikachu on it) and its machine washable quite easily. I can fold it for simple storage at the bottom of my bag, and its easily able to be customized depending on your skills or the makers skills at a sewing machine/loom. That and its actually cheaper to do this than it is to just buy a playmat, depending on the amount of free time you have.

Professor, I recently bought a Star City Games playmat, from the Liz Nugents collection. Please, can you tell me your apinion about the quality of the SCG's playmates? Are they washable? I'm also new at the channel, and i'm surprised of how good your videos are. Very happy of learning magic tricks here ^^

I personally use monster. Monster playmat holder. Monster deck box. Monster dice bag and monster binder. While using kmc sleeves. All are white.

Can you give a quick guide on the proper way to wash the playmats? I have tried with two and they either got destroyed or bleached (albeit that was probably my fault).

Professor do you think it would be good to get a over sized play mate from inked using a 60 card deck?

Where did you buy the Khalsa Brain Games mat? Is it available online?

Hey professor, I was about to purchase some legion sleeves, and noticed that they sold play mats as well. Could you review play mats by legion?

One minor observation: Many playmats use latex in the mix. If you have an allergy, you may want to double-check first. That microfiber one does strike me as a potential boon for those with latex allergies.

Sean Riley Fabulous advice, I'm sorry that I did not mention that in this review. Checking with the manufacturer just now, the Khalsa Brain playmat is indeed latex free.

When I wash my playmat, do I throw it in the drier as well? Also, what settings should my washer and\or drier be on when performing this task?

If you roll up the play mat won't the dirt that's on the table follow with the back side and make the front dirty as well.

What if chosen to buy a custom mat from say e-bay? Is there anything I should be avoiding or look for like should the description list materials or where they got it from?

Any thoughts on playmats from "Gordian Knot"?
    Are they washable?
    Are they durable?
...or those are "one-time use" only?

What's the best way to wash my play mat? Do I use detergent or just run it through without? And i should just hang dry it right?

Would the khalsa brains playmats still fit in the tubes? They are quite a bit bigger and I want to know before I make a purchase.

Is there going to be an update that includeds ultimate guard? I realize not alot of people use ultimate guards products in comparison to ultra pro but im planning on pick up a new play mat and was wondering on ultimate guards since ive enjoyed their products so far

Not to mention, the awkward size of the Dragon Shield mat makes it impossible to find a tube that fits it (I haven't found one yet)
