  • Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development, Toy Story 4, Being the Ricardos, Clifford The Big Red Dog, Archibald’s Next Big Thing) discusses the impact a chronic, invisible condition can have on mental health. He explains how living with severe asthma shifted his worldview and contributed to his anxiety and panic attacks, and the consequences of living life in a state of constant vigilance. Tony opens up about how being bullied led him to build a comedic defense system, why he loves connecting with others who share his condition, and the importance of seeing yourself in other people. Mayim and Tony bond over the role faith plays in their mental wellness, learning to practice contentment, and the similarities between cognitive behavioral therapy and meditation. Mayim highlights ways to calm your mind when communicating with difficult people in another installment of Moments of Peace & Calm.

Speaking about asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, as a mom of a boy who suffered in his early childhood some very severe episodes of Croup Syndrom, to the point to end almost always at ER with pale or bluish around his mouth, barely breathing till an epinephrin shot, the amount of anxiety triggered watching your son not breathing is close to a panic attack and much worse than if you were yourself who does not breathe.

This was honestly one of my favorites! The comment you made about the music flowing over you and you picking ONLY what you needed can be really helpful not only to those you've mentioned but also to a ruminator. And another thought, we should have inhalers alongside fire extinguishers and first aid kits in every public building. I'm for real... I mean, it's so not fair for someone to go through that fear alone and the rest of us not knowing how to help. Anyway, great show, thanks for sharing Tony Hale with us, Mayim, YOU ROCK!!

Once in a while, for whatever reason, Jonathan will barely say anything during an episode, but that is pretty rare. You two always include include a little levity and banter in the intro and outro. Suffice it to say, after two episodes with no Jonathan at all; his presence, his perspective and his voice are missed very much! Hope he is well and back soon.
I really enjoyed your discussion with Tony Hale today. You have a way of uplifting and making each individual that you interview shine. It is not their fame or who they know that is so interesting; it's how relatable they are as they share their personal stories. Thank you, Mayim.

What a beautiful interview. I come from a similar faith background as Tony, & I love how he explained the path from “religion as formula” to actual relationship with God. That really is refreshing to see, & I love how Mayim is able to have these kinds of conversations with people from all or no faith backgrounds.
Now I want to watch Veep so I can see Tony’s work!

Mysterious Benedict Society is wonderful. My husband and I are 50 we don't have kids, but we really enjoyed it. It's so hard to find entertainment that is not so violent that it's triggering, but Tony Hale has found this wonderful place where the story telling is exciting and even dark at times, but it's not horrific. It's just good fun. Good for all ages. Loved this whole discussion. Thanks so much.

Jerry Seinfeld has a wonderful way of referring to training the inner puppy. He says: “Your brain is a Schnauzer. Your mind is eternal, beautiful, and perfect. But your brain is a Schnauzer. And your job is to train the Schnauzer.” Essentially, to become a channel for your mind (or Mind) to come through. Jerry is a longtime practitioner of TM, as many people know.
Great episode. As a person with asthma since 1969 (get a flu shot, kids, my asthma developed as an aftereffect of the flu), who has also had panic attacks, I loved this episode and Tony Hale. Mayim’s excellent question about how the idea of a loving God fits into the picture of suffering is a universal one, and I’d love to see this addressed in another episode. ❤️

nailed it yet again ❤️ i was diagnosed wirh systemic lupus erythematosus at 20. along with that came a bunch of stuff, including 3 types of anemia. when i have theses attacks, my hemoglobin drops severely-i'm talking down to a 3.4 (on average, sometimes lower, or sometimes it's a 4). THAT fear of "shit, it's happening, gonna be in the hospital any day now", is so fucking frustrating. it's anxiety, YES, but it's also ANGER. you feel betrayed by your own body. even when you're not thinking about it, you're thinking about it. loved this. love you 💪🏼💯

I've always thought Tony Hale was hilarious onscreen & as well his acting chops in "Being The Ricardos" really shine. But observing his natural behavior in blooper reels from various things (available here on UA-cam) is what more deeply informed my genuine appreciation of him. Having watched this conversation, I now believe he would be a great friend. He seems like an authentically good soul in addition to having a wonderfully wry sense of humor. I think that the people who get to have him in their lives are very fortunate. Another great podcast Mayim & Jonathan, thanks!

Hey..so great to devirtualize Erin, the fantastic woman who made possible my MBB merch internationally arrive! 😍
As an asthmatic one myself who became such as an adult due to bronchiectasis left in my lungs after chemo, I couldn’t agree more: we use to take for granted such a “simple” thing as breathing and when you’ve an asthma crisis the anxiety you feel is enormous and your inhaler become your most precious thing! Mind-body connection..in spite of you! Cancer never made me so anxious as asthma does!

Pausing at about the halfway point here because I’m resonating with everything that’s being said on such a deep level I’m feeling emotional! I am an asthmatic person myself. Thankfully it’s much more mild since I’ve been an adult but as a child I suffered horribly from asthma. It never really occurred to me until just now that I was such an anxious child because of my condition. I had to go to the nurse at lunch every day for years to get nebulizer treatments and always had my inhaler on hand at sleepovers and during school. There’s absolutely a certain damage that’s caused by that constant fear at such a young age of, at its core, death. It occurs to me as I’m watching this that I developed social anxiety, massive stomach issues, and chronic pain around this time period of my life or shortly after and it’s wild how one “invisible condition” can cause such chaos in a young person’s life.

Love the variety of people you bring to these podcasts. Sorry, Tony, I didn’t know about you until Benedict Society tho. My little sister and I both have asthma. She started as a baby and had many trips to the ER in the middle of the night. Mine came on preteen after a bout of pneumonia. I always say it feels like an elephant sitting on your chest. I wish more people realized that perfumes and many types of scents trigger asthma attacks, even if it’s a scent you like. Of course my parent's friends smoked around us without thinking too. Thankfully as an adult I have gotten expert at avoiding allergens. Thanks for thoughtful content.

I just finished listening to this and had to comment. I was diagnosed with asthma at 7 months old and was hospitalized almost yearly as a child with asthma induced pneumonia until I was about 12 or 13 years old. As I grew into adulthood my asthma lessened in severity but was still excersize induced. I am 44 years old now and about 3 years ago I came across Patrick McKeowns you tube channel. He teaches breathing through your nose and how it can eliminate some asthma symptoms. I started breathing through my nose whenever possible (btw, very difficult at first) and trained myself to excersize this way as well and have not used my rescue Inhaler ever since. I know everyone is different and this may not work the same for everyone but it has changed my life! So I felt compelled to share.

It was interesting when Mayim asked Tony if his kid had asthma and if he could imagine, etc. That was very touching because while I don't even know if I want kids someday, I have certainly thought about the impact my anxiety might have on their development and whether I would be passing that anxiety on. That anxious energy of always thinking and planning the next 10 things that I see in my grandma a lot, and in my mom, and a little less so but in me too... ❤

I hope your daughter is doing well. ❤ I got diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder by first year of college, even had to drop out by my second semester because it caused me to become hospitalized. It's called Behcet's disease and it is like having the characteristics of Lupus, Crohns and MS in one. A huge factor that can cause this I learned was stress and I was so overwhelmed and stressed out my first year of college. I started to learn so much about mental health after this and have been in a remission state for years. I'm so happy you are helping your daughter out with her mental health because it is crazy what poor mental health and stress can lead to and school can be so overwhelming at any grade.

    Faith in Life, Beauty, the
    Universe......
    Makes great sense to me...
I think for a lot of people, seeing the great harms done by the religious extremism, the warring tribalism between religions and sects within religion...when people try to make religion Law, it's not a crutch...it's a crime.
    So when people have
Faith without pushing their religion on society or other individuals, I believe it can be very Beneficial and Beautiful.

Miyam, I love you and Jonathan and ALL your podcasts!!!!! This one was super!!! I could personally relate to you (sort of) as my parents were both first generation Americans. Born of Italian immigrant PEASANTS and German and Russian blue collar workers. And unfortunately even though my father had a masters degree and my mother went to an adult education business school, they raised us kids basically very backwards and actually with neglect. My parents were dictators. Children were to be seen and NOT heard EVER!!! And I do mean all my life!!! We were NOT loved unconditionally and my parents were NEVER my friends. (Their choice.) I’ve had issues all my life and my parents blamed me completely for any problems I had growing up. I’ve always wondered where the heck were they…..while they were raising me????? They were the educated adults! They were the grown ups! And I can count on 1 or maybe 2 fingers how many apologies I got from them in my entire life. And like your parents mine were ALWAYS RIGHT!!!When my mom was older, I used to ask her if she ever wondered why 3 of her 4 children moved about as far away as they could from where they were raised-from her…..my mother had no comment. In the end I took care of my aging mother all by myself. I did the best I could and really enjoyed doing it most of the time considering she NEVER CHANGED and was not very nice to me. I did a good job and I liked doing it and indirectly I think it saved my sanity. And what’s really sad is my parents were very good people…..to each other and their many friends and society. But NOT to their children! Such a waste of what should be some very special relationships!
