The middle area of Highcross looks so abandoned since a majority of the shops closed down, I have so many memories of walking Debenhams and House of Fraser.
Used to love a trip into town it was like a treat, now I avoid it like the plaque, dirty, scruffy, run down, the people it now attracts. Soulsby has ruined the city.
Rob Grassby no it's not .....still the same Victorian town ... don't be fooled by the modern buildings. Leicester is still in many ways a very medieval Victorian city ......starting with the people (no ethnics )
Rob Grassby you may not believe this but there are white people who still livening this town just like their Victorian forefathers..... even dress the same ...
I don't believe it....my post has been hijacked by far right trolls!. I am referring to the fact that most of the old shops and many high street chains have disappeared!
Funny. I used to work at the Barclays in town hall square in 2001-2005. I can remember the foul fermented stench of rotten fruit of the floor as I walked by in the morning.
Went to the poly in 1980, stayed in de Monfort square, up the new walk. great town, good times. Still remember “The Globe” pub, st. Martins records, the hippy shop “ The Very Bizzare”. Bloody hell, I feel old.
I did notice NOBODY was holding a mobile phone at all. - that's one contrast you see of these old videos.. everyone was talking to each other face to face.. having actual human conversation.

Great video, cannot get over how much the town centre has changed in 18 years. walk around Leicester now and it's a different place.

@@eightiesmusic1984 aye up me duck. Maybe things were a bit more cleaner back then. Street cleaners taking pride in their job and all. 🤓
Man, Woolworths was such a cool shop.
Would love to see a video of Vaughan Way and St Peters Lane before the Highcross development. That has changed beyond recognition.

Not a mobile phone in sight
Obviously...
What did you expect you cant use something that didnt exist
@@Tom-px8cr lol, so mobile phones didn't exist in 1999? lol
Most people didn’t have a mobile in 1999. That changed rapidly once 2000 came though
Plenty of phoneboxes
So many memories. Thanks.

2 seconds into the video, those fuel prices.
Minimum wage £3.6
Gosh fairly descent them, most people have gave up going into town now,
About the time it really started to go downhill, thanks to Blair mainly and the labour council always boasting they were working for you!

The first generation blackberry phone was around then with internet and email access but very archaic by today's standards.

This looks better than Bangor 2019

All people walking without phones 🤣 no smart phones?
Then it was people who were smart, not their phones
