This is a fantastic tradition I had never heard of. I can imagine telling wonderful stories of empowering and freeing the slaves stolen from their families (such as Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad), then reading the Emancipation Proclamation at midnight, followed by more stories of continuing the fight for justice and equality like MLK and the March on Washington.
