Dan Harmon has a show called "HarmonQuest", which is a semi-animated dungeons & dragons show with a new guest star every episode. Super underrated, but it's currently only on Crunchyroll.
I've played D&D a handful of times myself, no idea what the campaigns were, but had a blast every time! I think the key is doing it with a good group of people and having an experienced dungeon master. Great reaction as always!

I appreciate that Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley) was outspoken against this episode being banned for "Black Face".
Imagine seeing Chang in this episode and thinking he was trying to be a black person 😅

This episode is so well written and acted. Lots of funny moments, plus the reveal that Jeff coined Neil's nickname. "I don't like being excluded, Jeff. Do you?" "Yes!" 😁

You first heard the name Fat Neil in the Conspiracy/Blanket fort episode, then we see him once in another episode when Duncan calls him that name

It's a wonderful episode i looove Community and I love Dnd and other TTRPG's however, it's baffling that some people in the fandom are willfully ignorant of this episode.
    1. The episode was not banned, community was never "canceled" Netflix just didn't include it in the streaming but you can find it anywhere. To be fair they acquired community in 2020 when the racial awareness of America was at an all-time high. As a cooperation that trying to save its own butt yea it makes sense.
    2. When people say "Imagine seeing Chang and thinking he is trying to be a black person." It's like they love the episode without actually watching the episode. The characters themselves make mention of it Pierce calls it blackface and Shirley opens it up with " Are we going to ignore the walking hate crime." Yes, he is a dark elf but like every race in dnd there are gradients. He could have slapped on some gray body paint and say he is Drizzt Do'Urden and we would get it instead he chose to put on pitch black paint with no dimension, no blues, no whites to add. The show knew the images(that's why they had the black women call it out) they were trying to evoke and somehow it's the audience that is stupid for picking up the clear implications.

This episode was not banned, and anyone who tells you it was is either lying or doesn't know what the word "banned" means.
It was unilaterally taken down by Netflix and Hulu in response to absolutely no one being outraged, and it's easily viewable on streaming services today.

Dude, D&D is AWESOME. I think you’d really like it! I’m currently running a horror themed campaign also, but I’m not writing it, just running what someone else wrote. You should check out some DnD content on your own if you’re interested, like Critical Role or Dimension 20!

The Al Jolson remark is a reference to The Jazz Singer, a 1927 film that heralded the arrival of talking pictures and all but ended the silent era. Jolson appeared in musical numbers appearing in black face.

oh and about horror, in dnd there are already LOTS of undead and other creatures.
and there's a class called a warlock, which is a magic user that gained their powers by making a deal with some sort of entity(there are many to choose from and if you have a very imaginative dm you could even create others), making some sort of pact(there are different kinds of pacts)and there are also "sorcerers" who gained magic through some sort of bloodline. and there are all sorts of gods and realms. and if nothing that already is part of dnd tickles your horror fancy you can always create your own. dnd is just a system, you can add or subtract anything you want. all you need is an informal agreement between all the participants.

Played a decent amount of DND! It as a system isn't necessarily designed for horror but can do it well. I worry about folks falling into DND and getting stuck there as there only tabletop game as there's a bunch of other fun ones.
One of my fav sessions was kinda improv'd with me dming where I set up a fairy tale thing where the characters (necromancer tinged sorceror and a literal ninja) found a log built mansion on the woods, that was made out of the corpses of dryads (spirits that live in trees.)
Had a fun tragic love story turned into a curse angle, an excuse for wooden hands to creep out of the floor and cause difficult terrain once the haunting got underway, very fun.
You can do a lot of out of the box stuff with DND and I've run a few more horror based games, but it helps to know the rules by playing a more standard game so you know where it's okay to break them.

This "black face" is about as much black face as the actors playing uruk hai in Lord of the Rings. It's clearly not trying to be a black guy, and it's also even clearer that it's not in any way meant to demean black people.

I always recommend trying to find someone running Curse of Strahd for your first D&D game.
That might be controversial because it's the kind of adventure where you're going to lose, run away, or die a lot.
But I think that that teaches new players good lessons about when it's smart to NOT fight, and what to do when you're licking your wounds from a loss

Have played D&D in the past, always an enjoyable time. Also Star Wars, Marvel and DC-styled games. Have a friend who set up an Aliens-type role-playing adventure which was as close to horror as you can get.
Troy writing down Annie's seduction techniques with the Pegasi maiden gets me every time. And that Abed designed the Hector character with "Troy in mind" speaks volumes.
This is a great reaction to an absolute top tier Community episode!!!

  • @sabin97

this is the best community episode.
and it's also the best performance chevy chase ever gave(including all his movies).
making pierce the villain was a great choice by the writers.
if you're gonna try dnd remember the best race has always been high elves, followed by any other elf......and humans get a free feat.
the best class is the mages(most people call them wizards, but i like the term mage better, because they use magic, not wizes). if you feel overwhelmed about the mechanics, the warrior is fairly easy to use and is strong from the start. a cleric is very versatile as they can be effective at healing, magic damage, and even melee.
if you're a minmaxer you can spend quite a lot of time coming up with great combinations that test the limits of the rules.

If you're playing DnD 5e, which is the most popular version and is very accessible, I wouldn't worry about what is a good or bad class/race. None of them are bad and the difference between "good" and "bad" classes/races is minimal. It's not about "winning" anyway. Especially races are more mechanically identical these days if you use the Tasha's racial bonuses (+2 and +1 to any stat). They are all fine.
For a first timer, all I'd worry about is thinking up what kind of character you want to play. Come up with a vague (or detailed) backstory and build your character around that.
Like, maybe you have an idea of playing some kind of thrifter who has a loyal dog/wolf companion that lives in a small cottage in the woods outside a village and helps the village people out with hunting sometimes. The easiest match for that would be a Ranger. Though you could do others as well.
Or maybe you want to play an ex-prince who lost his family and crown to someone/something and made a pact with some demon to get revenge. The obvious match would be a Warlock, but again if that doesn't interest you mechanically, just mold some other class to fit you idea of the character you want to play.
That's how I build characters most of the time anyway.
