    Guardians of the Galaxy was a minor, relatively obscure Marvel property before James Gunn chose it. Perfect match. The MCU has had great success with characters who weren't already blockbuster within comics. Even Iron Man was regarded as a fairly second-rate Marvel hero until Robert Downey Jr brought Tony Stark to life.

      I'd never heard of them when it came out. Even though I'm a big sci fi fan I wasn't expecting much from a story that had a tree and a talking raccoon in the group.
      It ended up being my favourite Marvel movie. Loved the story, cast, humour and soundtrack. Amazing film.

      Interesting, they let Gunn pick his movie? That's pretty cool!
      As for the Guardians, I did read comics as a kid, I knew of them, but nothing about them really. I may have read about a Starlord or whoever, but their names would never stay in my brain or anything. I was mostly into the Xmen back then, though I knew the other main Marvel characters such as Hulk and whatnot.

    • @ink-cow

      @@mattschliemann9683 Groot first appeared in a story by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, but he was a rampaging tree monster from Planet X bent on extracting humans for scientific experiments. His first words on the cover: "Behold, I am Groot the Invincible! Who dares to defy me?"
      So clearly these things developed over time. 😄
      Depending on when you were a kid... it seems the "I am Groot" iteration didn't appear until he joined the Guardians in 2006, less than ten years before the movie. IIRC (stressing that) this was a reason Gunn wanted to do Guardians, because there was more flexibility in doing the lesser-known team, and the fact they were more science fiction than superhero.

      @@ink-cow I feel like I remembered a character that would only talk with the same phrase. But it would be in the back of my head and I'd go "oh yeah that guy exists!" only when I'd see it in a comic or a magazine like Wizard or one of those marvel universe handbooks they used to make back in the day covering all that is Marvel Comics.
      Actually other than there was a team that existed called the guardians I don't think I knew much about it except for Yondu. I remember him way back in the day. When I first heard of/saw the movie I was like who's Starlord? Sure if he showed up in a title I was reading at the time I'd see him there as a guest star but didn't really keep him in my memory unless he'd pop up again later.
      I think I remembered a Raccoon that could talk existed. I knew about Drax the Destroyer from Marvel trading cards, honestly though I thought the card said he was a villain so I was surprised to see him on the GotG team.
      Cosmically I knew of your bigger heroes like silver surfer and Adam warlock (haven't seen gotg 3 yet), Shiar empire and the corsairs, skrulls, Kree, mojo, pretty much anything that may have been introduced by the xmen comics. I knew the basics about Thanos, I didn't read avengers nor fantastic four outside of crossovers. But as for the Guardians, barely anything.
      Such a shame though, seems like that title would have the ability to tell some wacky stories that could go anywhere when you have the whole galaxy as your playground to play with. Prolly would have been some good reads

    All the music in the Guardian’s movies is diegetic meaning that it is comping from a source in the scene and the characters are hearing it too. Space is not in fact instantly fatal to humans. As NASA once put it human skin is actually a pretty good spacesuit. Capillaries near the surface would start bleeding but you'd remain conscious and be able to function for up to 30 seconds or so.

    • @Haldurson
      @Haldurson Рік тому

      You can actually survive longer if you hyperventilate and then empty your lungs before being exposed to a vacuum. Experiments in the 1960s with chimps showed that they survived after being exposed to vacuum for 3.5 minutes. I've seen conflicting numbers for human beings, anywhere between 2 to 3 minutes.

    • @paratus04
      @paratus04 Рік тому +2

      It’s more like 15 seconds of consciousness. A failed space suit test exposed the test engineer to vacuum and that’s about how long he lasted.
      The problem is the low pressure means oxygen starts to get pulled out of your bloodstream through your lungs so blood oxygen drops pretty fast. You can’t hold your breath either because the pressure difference can start to damage your lung tissue so you have to exhale.
      They got test engineer back into pressure in less than 90 seconds and he was basically fine

    • @thenathanhaines
      @thenathanhaines Рік тому +1

      @@paratus04 Yeah, Navy test pilots get 15-20 seconds, so everyone else gets about 10-12, with bonuses for fitness. And you don't instantly freeze either, because with no atmosphere there's no convection, so radiant heat loss is incredibly ineffective.
      Interestingly enough, after about 60-90 seconds, your heart stops. Anyone who's returned to pressure before their heart stops recovers with no long-term ill effects. No one whose heart has stopped has ever recovered. Fortunately, all such incidents are exceedingly rare.

    You'd be surprised at how many Marvel characters actually exist with over 8000 main characters and over 80,000 side characters. DC has around 10,000 different characters main characters according to DC who don't really keep a number count. So there's alot for Marvel to pull from in terms of characters from iconic ones known in the mainstream to Guardians of the Galaxy a team that only hardcore readers new about. Introduce you're heavy hitters first like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America and then go into the lesser known characters in the public eye like Antman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Shang-Chi Moonknight, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing etc.

    fun fact: you actually would be able to survive in space for a little while, and much longer than they usually depict in movies. You would not freeze immediately and turn into a block of ice... with no air in space there's no medium for your body heat to leave your body through so it would actually take a long time for your to freeze to death. You also would not explode due to the pressure difference... contrary to popular belief a vacuum doesn't "suck" with great force, it's only when a very high-pressure system is next to a much lower-pressure system that it would explode... you probably would lose consciousness fairly quickly, and of course you would eventually suffocate after a few minutes. The main thing you'd have to worry about is your blood boiling due to the low pressure (substances solidify, liquefy, and vaporize at different temperatures depending on air pressure), but that would also take more than a second.

      @@AwesomeUSMovies It is dang cold. But in a vacuum, with nothing to absorb the heat from your body through convection or conduction, it actually takes a fairly long time for your body to radiate its heat away into space.

    Some trivia:
    1. There would be four actors that James (and others) might recognize, and ironically, two of them are the non-human characters - Vin Diesel (from The Fast and the Furious and Saving Private Ryan) is Groot, and Bradley Cooper (the long-haired "cool guy" in The Hangover) is Rocket. The third is Glenn Close, the Vice-President from Air Force One. She plays Irani Rael here. Lastly is Benicio del Toro (The Collector in this film); previously, he was in Snatch with Brad Pitt.
    2. The song that Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) listens to during the opening credits is "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone. It remains their biggest hit of their career.
    3. "Come and Get Your Love" is a rarity among singles - it reached a peak of #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 music charts in 1974. However, it was popular enough that it stayed on the charts long enough that for the year, it reached #4. This is one of the rare cases where its year-end ranking was higher than its weekly ranking.
    4. Guardians of the Galaxy received two Oscar nominations in 2014: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup. It didn't win in either category, and it was Interstellar that won in the Visual Effects category.
    5. Director James Gunn spent two years in college at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, then left, returned to his hometown of St. Louis, and later graduated from Saint Louis University. According to him, "Gunn" is a shortened name of the Irish name "MacGillgunn."
    6. To my knowledge, James Gunn is not related to Anna Gunn, who played Skyler White in "Breaking Bad." However, he does have five siblings, several of whom are known in some circles.
    7. Guardians of the Galaxy made a box office of $773 million, which was third-highest for the year of 2014.
    8. Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) is a former professional wrestler, beginning his acting career in 2006.

    Gamora is played by Zoe Saldana who played Uhura in the 2009 new timeline "Star Trek" film as well as Neytiri in "Avatar".
    Chris Pratt, 'Star Lord', is best known for the last couple of "Jurassic Park" films as the expert Raptor-wrangler.
    The voice of Groot is Vin Diesel ("Fast & Furious" franchise, the two "Riddick" films), and the voice of Rocky (the 'Raccoon') is Bradley Cooper (the "Hangover" franchise, "Limitless", "American Sniper", "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves").
    The woman playing the head of Nova Corps Irani Rael is Glenn Close (so many films) and Corpsman Dey is played by John C Reilley ("Stepbrothers", Roxy's suffering husband in "Chicago")
    The fellow with the 'fantastic eyebrows' was the head medical technician always saying "Perfect" in "The 5th Element".

It was produced by George Lucas and Lucasfilms did the special effects in pretty sure. And it had a pretty bangin theme song I thought as a kid.
    But! It bombed at the box office. Watching it nowadays I do enjoy it still though there are some scenes that drag. Somethings I can't believe they put in that movie. Check it out sometime, but be wary, as did other people, you might not like it as much.

      In that film, Jeffrey Jones ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Beetlejuice", "Sleepy Hollow") turns into this scorpion-esque trans-dimensional monster that Howard has to kill. Also, Howard's costar is a very young Lea Thompson (the "Back to the Future" franchise) before she did very much else.
      Personally, I loved the comic and was hyped to hear it was being made into a film. I thought they did a great job and to this day can't understand why it did so poorly in the theaters. Just another film before its time, I guess.

      Also, I don't know enough about Comic-book Groot, so I'm going with a trope. There's a scifi show called Farscape. One of the characters is a blue lady named Zhan. She's basically a humanoid-looking plant. At some point in her life-cycle, she produces those dandelion seeds that kids blow all over. Shortly thereafter, she passes on. Just like Groot putting out the little flower for the little girl and the light-up floaty motes.
      Of course, the big difference is Groot wrapping up his friends and that BIG BIG crash.

    Humans can survive around about a minute in total vacuum with very few long term effects (the biggest one being you'd probably have blurry vision for a minute or so after you got back in pressure. Granted you'd only be conscious for about half the time, so you'd better hope you get done what you need to in that time. Long term exposure of your skin to total vacuum will burst blood vessels just below the surface and basically result in a full-body hicky.

    • @StarkRG
      @StarkRG Рік тому

      @@AwesomeUSMovies Eyes would cool off due to evaporation of the moisture on their surface, but vacuum isn't cold, vacuum isn't any temperature because temperature requires stuff and vacuum is the absence of stuff. Vacuum is one of the best thermal insulators known which is why vacuum flasks like thermoses work so well. Assuming someone doesn't manage to get back into a period compartment, and their corpse wasn't in sunlight they will very, _very_ slowly cool down over the course of several weeks or months, but they definitely won't instantly freeze. If they _are_ in sunlight, though, and near Earth, they won't cool down at all but will, instead, be receiving more energy from the sun than they radiate so they will burn to a crisp over the course of a day or two as their temperature gets raised to around 250°F.
      The biggest danger isn't your eyes freezing, but drying out and having a larger internal gauge pressure than normal. If you squint, you'll keep some of that moisture in and still be able to see somewhat. The pressure difference is the biggest reason your vision will be blurry as your eyes will slightly change shape with the pressure difference and will take a bit of time to go back to normal, which they probably will.
      Vacuum's not great for human survival, but there are significantly worse situations to be in.
