A great fight, Ali proved why he had a granite chin. Against one of the hardest hitters in the division. It is said that Shavers threw 269 punches.
Ali was the Greatest of all time, this encounter with Shavers, and the Rumble In The Jungle with Foreman were the two fights that proved it!

Ali IS great BUT - Ellis beat him, Shavers beat him, and once Norton (twice in that, out of their trilogy - one is counted, and the time even Ali said Norton won when the cards said Ali won) - IE: to get a title for most of the 20th century off a HVWGHT you had to KO. Ali was many years past his prime in this fight- his best tools, his reflexes and footspeed long gone, but he was still pulling off wins with his clever ring-managing generalship and heart. It's telling that people comment on how fast his jab was here, when he was so much slower than his peak years. Shavers was dangerous- neither Frazier nor Foreman wanted near the guy because he hit so damned hard. Ali somehow takes in on the chin, and keeps on his feet to win the day- but it's an ugly spectacle, knowing Ali's eventual fate from all this damage. Really, Ali never recovered from his three and a half year forced retirement- he was a shadow of his former self when he came back. Anyone who doubts this just needs to watch him fight Cleveland Williams- THAT is the real Ali.

    • @syourke3
      @syourke3 2 роки тому +10

Ali’s fight with Cleveland Williams was not his best fight at all. Williams was a shadow of his former greatness. He had been shot and nearly killed by a police officer and suffered permanent damage. He could hardly move anymore. He retired after that fight. His first fight with Liston was a better fight. Yes, Ali was not the same fighter after the layoff but he was still pretty amazing.

Earnie Shavers is a class act. I wish he had beaten Larry Holmes in their second fight. He floored the champion with a punch that would knocked out a bull but Holmes showed his greatness by not only surviving the blow but getting to his feet and retaining the championship. That night was the closest Earnie came to winning the title.
Unfortunately for Earnie, both times he fought for the title he was matched against men with iron jaws. If there was ever a man in my lifetime who hit harder than Sonny Liston and George Foreman, it was Earnie Shavers. But the strongest puncher for a full 15 round fight in my time has been the great Joe Frazier. From one to fifteen, Joe was throwing bombs.

  • @abozeidalhelali

The greatness of Ali manifested itself in the 15th round. He was hurt, tired, and just hanging on but somehow in the final minute he found something from some where to nearly knocking Shavers out. That's what champions do, they dig in and find answers when everyone expects them to collapse.
May Allah has mercy on your soul, Champ 🥊

Original Narrator, when one has an idol looses his lucidity.
In fact Ali has never been the greatest.
He begun lucky as he beated Sonny Liston at his late time.
Then who was a real great champion Ali distroyed? Chuvalo, Midlemberger, Patterson....all finished boxers.
Apart them, Frazier distroyed him. So did Spinks, Norton and finally even a not great Holmes finished him.
Now imagine him against Rocky Marciano, Tyson or Wilder...in his early years and we would never have heard about this fake idol.

Ali should have retired after his match with Jimmy Young -- a fighter whom Ali would have dominated five years earlier, but was just barely able to beat, partly because of how biased the judges were in his favor. Ali was still world champion, was rich, world famous, and could easily have made a fortunate splitting his time between being a public speaker, a color commentator for heavyweight bouts, and a supporting actor in Hollywood films. I suspect it was the greed of those around him that kept him in the ring for several more years, and that's what cost him his health.

At least Dick Enberg and Earnie weren't snowed by Ali's second round play acting after Shavers almost ripped his head off. Give Ali credit...Earnie caught him with 2 or 3 more big right hands after he knocked Ali silly and Muhammad didn't go down. Shavers' power came from a combination of speed and bulk. His punches actually had some snap and that's rare for a big hitter. Foreman and Liston, considered the most feared punchers of all time, were clubbers. Shavers was more than that. It must have been terrifying to be in the ring with him. I'm still amazed by the fighters who bought into Ali's antics after he was hurt, Frazier in their first fight especially. He had a real shot at taking Ali out in the 11th round but he admitted years later he hesitated when Ali went into his rubber leg routine. I was even more surprised so many broadcasters bought into it too...Dunphy, Sheridan et al questioned if Ali was really hurt when he got clocked. Enberg was at ringside and heard the concussion of the punch. Fake rubber legs or not, he knew Ali was in serious trouble.

This was definitely Ali in the twilight of his career...but even still, he took these last few fights as a pro fighter. Shavers never looked this good...he was usually a brawler, but he worked hard to actually have a game plan, and almost pulled it off. But Ali’s chin is what made the difference here. You can say “if this was Ali in his prime he would’ve whooped Shavers ass”, but it wasn’t...and we will never know...

8 Shavers - 6 Ali - 1 Even. After scoring the third Norton fight last night at 6-5-4 for Ali last night, I thought maybe I’d see this fight differently. However, I still feel like Shavers should have won a close decision. It wasn’t a gift decision, but I still consider Shavers the uncrowned champion that got schooled by the future heir apparent in Larry Holmes. As far as I’m concerned, Holmes won the title beating Shavers in March 78. However, Ali winning here wasn’t a major travesty. I just felt a few rounds were closer to Shavers winning than Ali. Again, I was hoping I’d see this fight differently but I gave this fight to Shavers around 1999-2002 and I still stand by the opinion that Shavers took it to the champion and should have won.
