Ali should have retired after his match with Jimmy Young -- a fighter whom Ali would have dominated five years earlier, but was just barely able to beat, partly because of how biased the judges were in his favor. Ali was still world champion, was rich, world famous, and could easily have made a fortunate splitting his time between being a public speaker, a color commentator for heavyweight bouts, and a supporting actor in Hollywood films. I suspect it was the greed of those around him that kept him in the ring for several more years, and that's what cost him his health.
Ali, even in a diminished state and a shadow of his former self, still had many moments of brilliance. However, it is hard to watch what was probably the final nail in the coffin on his brain damage from the heavy blows he took in this fight. Add these to the Norton fights and Ali-Frazier 1 and 3, and his fate was sealed.
No ano dessa luta, era pra Ali ter se aposentado dos Rings, já não tinha mais condições físicas e agilidade suficiente, estava lento e sem potência nos seus socos. A ganância dos empresários o maltrataram, e fizeram mau a saúde de Ali.
At least Dick Enberg and Earnie weren't snowed by Ali's second round play acting after Shavers almost ripped his head off. Give Ali credit...Earnie caught him with 2 or 3 more big right hands after he knocked Ali silly and Muhammad didn't go down. Shavers' power came from a combination of speed and bulk. His punches actually had some snap and that's rare for a big hitter. Foreman and Liston, considered the most feared punchers of all time, were clubbers. Shavers was more than that. It must have been terrifying to be in the ring with him. I'm still amazed by the fighters who bought into Ali's antics after he was hurt, Frazier in their first fight especially. He had a real shot at taking Ali out in the 11th round but he admitted years later he hesitated when Ali went into his rubber leg routine. I was even more surprised so many broadcasters bought into it too...Dunphy, Sheridan et al questioned if Ali was really hurt when he got clocked. Enberg was at ringside and heard the concussion of the punch. Fake rubber legs or not, he knew Ali was in serious trouble.
This was definitely Ali in the twilight of his career...but even still, he took these last few fights as a pro fighter. Shavers never looked this good...he was usually a brawler, but he worked hard to actually have a game plan, and almost pulled it off. But Ali’s chin is what made the difference here. You can say “if this was Ali in his prime he would’ve whooped Shavers ass”, but it wasn’t...and we will never know...
I saw all of Ali's fights after he whupped Liston ! And at the very least Ali should have retired after this fight . My scorecard for this great fight was : 8 rounds Ali. - 6 rounds Shavers - 1 round even . Ali ideally should have hung it up after the 3rd Frazier fight. R.I.P. Champ !
@Vox Daze He was definitely slowing down significantly. He sustained a lot of damage as a result of this fight. His kidneys took a beating according to Ferdie Pacheco. 8 Shavers - 6 Ali - 1 Even. After scoring the third Norton fight last night at 6-5-4 for Ali last night, I thought maybe I’d see this fight differently. However, I still feel like Shavers should have won a close decision. It wasn’t a gift decision, but I still consider Shavers the uncrowned champion that got schooled by the future heir apparent in Larry Holmes. As far as I’m concerned, Holmes won the title beating Shavers in March 78. However, Ali winning here wasn’t a major travesty. I just felt a few rounds were closer to Shavers winning than Ali. Again, I was hoping I’d see this fight differently but I gave this fight to Shavers around 1999-2002 and I still stand by the opinion that Shavers took it to the champion and should have won.
Hirsch Siamwanda I wouldn’t go that far, even if boxing has been corrupt. Besides, Holmes beating him March ‘78 kind of makes me forgive the decision. I scored the fight as a draw once, and I can’t state it’s a clean win for Shavers. A clean win is between five and eight rounds ahead. This didn’t have that.

Ali won the boxing match only because he won the fight. the rules of the boxing match is what stopped the last round and what stopped Shavers from getting knocked out. Ali went toe to toe with him and came out on top after 15 full rounds. That is a fight that is won.

@@haroonkapoor8233 I'm not going to knock someone who thought Shavers won this fight, but it is debatable. Judges don't score 1 big bomb any greater than one other clear head shot, or 5 head shots for that matter. Which about the ratio of head shots Ali had over Shavers the whole fight.
That fight was much closer than what the judges had. Thought shavers was up one round, but some of them were super close - could have gone either way. Interesting how the championship rounds both fighters nearly finished each other.

However, it is hard to watch what was probably the final nail in the coffin on his brain damage from the heavy blows he took in this fight. Add these to the Norton fights and Ali-Frazier 1 and 3, and his fate was sealed.

It looked like he already had Parkinson by this point
@@allyd-moon2875 he absolutely did
We cannot know. Oters were hit much harder than him, and much more often and remained healthy. It is pure speculation.
Wow. Wow. Wow. WOW. Ali was in some brawls huh? No wonder he wound up as he was. What a brute. He always fought to the END. Incredible fight.
Ali Fought all the Champions !!!..He is a Genius !!! Shine in Peace Champ !!!
No ano dessa luta, era pra Ali ter se aposentado dos Rings, já não tinha mais condições físicas e agilidade suficiente, estava lento e sem potência nos seus socos. A ganância dos empresários o maltrataram, e fizeram mau a saúde de Ali.
Just like Elvis Presley !
The Greatest of all times, the Champ, RIP Mohammad Ali.
An Amazing Fight!
The only fight my heart hurts every time ali gets hit 😢
Much respect to Shavers… he gave Ali all he could handle that night.
Ali had the best chin in the history of the sport. That's why he got Parkinson later I think.
Yep. In my opinion he took more punishment in his career than any boxer ever did.
No. and no.
This is the power of God.. the mercy of God apparently Muhammad Ali was past his prime
Muhammad Ali legend of boxing world very amazing.
Ali took a horrible beating in this fight. But he really dug deep late to pull it out. Even Shavers later said Ali had won.
No one can compare the legacy he did....
How he took those right hands by Shavers I really don't know. Almost too tough for his own good. A great champion was Ali.
8:50 is the punch that shook all his kinfolk in Africa
Damn!!
Ali’s ability to take a punch and bounce back was other worldly
This is history, Ali survived and won. But I saw Shavers winning the fight by split decision on the last three rounds. Thanks
Nah, Shavers gave away too many of the middle rounds of the fight.
He comes through with the old Ali when needed. But the Ali who whipped Liston would destroy Shavers.
This was Ferdie's last fight, he couldnt continue to watch Ali destroy himself any longer. At the absolute very latest this should've been it.
Shave won
@@marksymbala3454 no he didnt
Ali should hace retired after thrilla in manila.. he wasnt the same after that fight ..the damage signs appeared after that fight
@@boxeolocopunch762 On Rounds, Yes Ali won, with his jab, holding, some combinaison etc. but if you just have to say who has dominated the fight, i would say shavers. if somebody who doesn't know the rules of boxing, he would tell earnie was robbed. But I think shavers should had put pressure more evey time Ali was hurt wich he didn't. neverthless Ali is very smart and won the fight
My personal final decision: 9 rounds Ali, 6 rounds Shavers
My score, considering penalties and 2 points rounds, is 142(Ali) - 139(Shavers)
tremendo Alí...nunca fue abuson... podría haber sido pero no.... era un buen compañero con sus rivales
Who expects what Ali did in round 15 he being very tired at round 8 till round 14 frome where his powerful coming in round 15 really muhamad ali is greatest boxer in all history
Ali ducked no one. He didn't need to fight Shavers and most boxers didn't take that chance.
ALI ❤ is ALI ❤...
Quel combat!!!Ali magnifique!!! R.I.P Mister!
Ali y su contrincante muy buenos boxeadores ambos una pelea para La historia
Pero Ali legano La pelea
les dernières secondes sont magiques.
I love Ali, but in this fight, he was slaughtered, really beaten up. He had some good moments also, but he should never have taken a 15 round fight against an opponent like Shavers, and given that he did, it should have been last.
How Ali withstood those murderous right hands from Shavers, God only knows! 😮 Came close to stopping Earnie in the last round too!
OK, just stop, stop stop. Round 4 J-Bianco whoever ----- this is such a freaking crooked ass sport. Round 4 to Ali?!? OMG. Ok, Ali gets an award from ME for taking some of the best Shaver Right hands EVER. But you don't win the round taking shots, LMFAO.
The Middle rounds were bit flat , but the beginning of the fight, and the later rounds were Excellent. Ali Clearly won the fight. The People that Think Foreman would have beaten Ali in a rematch, need only watch this fight and Foremans defeat by Young just before to Know They are Dreaming.....
Máximo respeito Alii o imbatível. Mesmo perdendo a mais mostrou coragem e resistência
Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. That was Mohammed Ali famous quote. From Kenya - Kisumu.
It's Very Clear That Ali Won This Fight!
Ali had nothing to prove here. He had already made his mark on the world. R.I.P KING 👑 NOW YOU KNOW GOD IS THE GREATEST!!!
All hail Ali always. The Greatests last great fight.15 th round and he still has something left.He beat em all fair and square...
I was wondering was Ali ever cut in a fight I don't remember him ever being cut?
@@sonnyblack71 Against Bob Foster he was cut.
@@tlig thanks for the info
Shavers won this fight clean, they were so corrupt
Hirsch Siamwanda I wouldn’t go that far, even if boxing has been corrupt. Besides, Holmes beating him March ‘78 kind of makes me forgive the decision. I scored the fight as a draw once, and I can’t state it’s a clean win for Shavers. A clean win is between five and eight rounds ahead. This didn’t have that.
@@forestgeorge8855 Well maybe a draw would make so much sense. Am sure to this day if we put 5 judges to do a recount we would expect a draw.
Ali lost the fight but clearly won the boxe match...my opinion.
For sure Shavers won the fight. Judges were too corrupt.
did ALI ever throw 1 good body punch in his entire career ? seems to me he was 100% a headhunter only
he threw quite a few body punches against Joe Bugner... and some against Terrell... but yes bodypunching wasn't Ali's cup of tea
If ali never hot parkinson he would’ve fought until the age of 60
شكرا سي محمد علي
Allahu akbar, merinding melihat Muhammed Ali dibronde terakhir, Allah yang maha Kuat berikan kekuatan, dengan usia yang tak lagi muda, mampu mengalahkan lawan-lawan tangguh
The hardest 30 punches in this fight went to Ernie Shavers. Probably 50. Ali may have won the boxing match. Shavers definitely won the fight.
Ali won the boxing match only because he won the fight. the rules of the boxing match is what stopped the last round and what stopped Shavers from getting knocked out. Ali went toe to toe with him and came out on top after 15 full rounds. That is a fight that is won.
Shavers reminds me of a tired Marvin hagler who really was the greatest!
Scott Perry
Yes I agree. I would of loved to see Hagler v Robinson at their best.
1 and only Muhammad ali
He was just so good to look at! 😍❣️
Agreed. Shavers is a sexy bastard 🤣
Keisha which one???!!!

@@tcb2826 I'm thinking Shavers was a one handed boxer ,saving the good one for the old right hander! Also Shaver wasn't very near as entertaining as Ali!
Muhammad Ali greatest boxer of all time but in this fight his punches seemed to have little power. Shavers punches knocked Ali back and rocked him.
BUENO ALÍ ERA LO MAXIMO, INTELIGENTE ESPERO SU OPORTUNIDAD Y GANÓ: EDDIE DE VZLA. LA GUAIRA.👏😃
58:52 What a great man! He takes his time to brush his hair 😎 while people are waiting..
.. And from the beginning of this fight you see clearly that earnie shavers is showing great respect for Muhammad ail.. He didn't even began to punch him in the face by his respect for him
30 secondes left and Shavers could have been koed in the 15th.
I love mohammad ali
This should have been Ali’s last fight
but he was too presomptious, so he went on.
Ali took a beating, the last few seconds saved him,i don't really know if that was enough.great Shavers!.
Well, he took the harder punches, but that was to be expected. Shavers never followed it up and took way more shots overall. The last few seconds saved Shavers, he was about to get knocked out.
@@MoMoMyPup10 Earnie Shavers won the fight those punches unbelievable
@@haroonkapoor8233 I'm not going to knock someone who thought Shavers won this fight, but it is debatable. Judges don't score 1 big bomb any greater than one other clear head shot, or 5 head shots for that matter. Which about the ratio of head shots Ali had over Shavers the whole fight.
@@MoMoMyPup10 shavers is more powerful and stronger than ali maaaan
@@haroonkapoor8233 that means nothing. Man.
Legend epic!!
That fight was much closer than what the judges had. Thought shavers was up one round, but some of them were super close - could have gone either way. Interesting how the championship rounds both fighters nearly finished each other.
I always thought Ali should have quit after this fight with 55-2, or at least the following year (Sept.) after the second Spinks fight with 56-3. As it was, he lost his last 2 fights and ended up with 56-5.
Records do lie.
Look at Mayweather...lol. 💰☻🤐
