i got in a fight with my fiancee tonight, and this video really helped me realize what i should and shouldnt do. its hard to take a step back and think about what you did wrong, especially when you think you believe you're right. thanks for always being there mommytard. you give incredible advice and you're really an inspiring and beautiful soul. i'm going to be working on myself from now on. (:

The tip about pride is the top one for me. I can be so stubborn & always want to be able to prove my point & "win" the argument. But nobody really wins when you each have different points of view & it just continually adds tension, being able to just say, look, I love you I don't want to argue about this anymore & trying to see their side & letting go of having to be "right" all the time has been one of the biggest lessons I'm still learning in my 9 years with my hubby too. TX for sharing!

Katilette, I can't begin to tell you how inspirational you and your family are to me. I've been watching for a couple of years and you have brought me laughter, hope and reassurance that there are wonderful people in the world! My dad was never there for me and to this day I don't really know him. Other members of my family don't get on either and I started to think that this was what life was! Watching you has changed my opinion and made me strive for happiness, and for that I THANK YOU!

That was the best advice for marriage that I've EVER heard. It almost brought me to tears because I just wanted to yell out YES!!! I will definitely work on all those things and I know I'll watch this video later when my hubby and I have a falling out. Luv you Colette!

I'm just glad to see how you and shay have made your marriage work so well on the same principles. I'm looking forward to a married life with happiness and love. I just pray we both are strong enough to keep working at it!

You guys seem so fun & so in love & when you talked about putting your relationship first even before your kids that got us talking & we totally agree. Colette... you are so inspiring. I love my parents to death, and they love eachother, but i've always felt that they don't have a very healthy relationship. they boss each other around, and take sides with the kids, and they dont "fight" but they dont always get along, and they let things bother them and let things bottle up inside, and i've always feared that i'll be unhappy after 20-something years of marriage too, but thank you for giving me hope and perspective. you are a GREAT role model.

  • @awinda1

I have been married 48 years and I'm 65. I agree with you on every point. You are correct. Marriage is selfless. I've learned to say ..."I think I'm right, but I could be wrong"..Our children all left us and have their own lives, but we will always be one...as it should be ..unto death do us part.

One thing I also think is important is, you have to get married for love. Not because you got a girl pregnant or because its what you think is the next step. In my case, I felt it in my heart and could see myself with my spouse and nobody else for the rest of my life. And we've been married for 10 1/2 years. No it isnt easy, but struggles really do make us stronger as a couple. Thanks for the vid and may you guys continue to share that strong love -3

Loved all your points! As Christians, my husband and I try to do our best at this as well. We actually have a weekly tradition: We both write on a post-it note what we would like from the other for that week. Could be anything from "I want you to get up earlier than the kids to have coffee together" or "Can you please not put your dirty socks on the floor" We put it on our bathroom mirror so we can both see it. It has been amazing to see the transformation in our marriage! :)

I just love you! I'm happy to be able to watch/ listen to such positive and real advice from you! I admire yours and shays marriage. Your attitude and outlook is motivation for my marriage. Most of all it's such a Christian approach to marriage and family without having religious opinions pushed on me. It is your actions/ behavior that make it known you have strong faith without having to say it or convince people of what you believe in : )

I do think it's incredibly important to love your spouse with all your heart, as you should, but I don't agree with loving them more than your children. One day, when the children are grown, it will be just you and your spouse, as you said, but at least when your children are still young and still need you, they need to know they mean as much to you. As a child who only ever grew up with a mom, it would have killed me if she found someone that she loved more than me. I know every family is different and so different things work for others, but for me, having my mom always tell me and prove to me that I was the most important one in her life gave me the security to grow up happy and feeling safe.

Hey Colette! So I know this was the goal from a few weeks ago, but it still carries over. When you said to talk to someone new every day (especially high school students) I decided I would try. In french class we had to do a project. My best friend and I sit together so we decided we would work together. We then say a girl (who is new and doesn't know many people) and realized she didn't have a group. We invited her into our group and had a GREAT time with her! I know that she appreciates us in

Since moving out of state and away from our families and close friends I haven't trusted anyone to watch our daughter so it's been a minute since we've been on a "date" alone. However, my husband and I have been married for almost 10 years and definitely having couple time is needed but it doesn't have to be at the movie theater or at a restaurant. Some of my favorite moments with my husband is snuggled on the couch watching one of our many tv shows we like to watch.
