Hey friends! Here's a tip & technique video, with a companion PDF chord sheet, showing you how to approach the F-major chord with a wrapped thumb on the low E string. Specifically, I'll be talking about how this technique is helpful when playing fingerstyle - when you'll often want your left pinky free to add flourish notes on the thinnest couple strings. I'll walk you through the technique, starting simple and guiding you through the process. I'll even show you a few practice exercises to put this technique through the paces. I hope you enjoy!

I always thought i wasnt capable of doing this technique because of my small fingers and as you said in the beginning i never did this in 15 years of playing. But this tutorial helped me and now i can do it. Nice, Thanks!
Awesome. Small bit of info about thumb placement got me playing the chord in like 2 days
Thank you dude. This helps me so much. Trying to learn a bunch of Townes van Zandt songs.
so lovely that melody in the f chord. I Love fingerstyle tutorials
This is so dope brotha! thank you for the tips and advice as well as the finger picking exercise
I have been putting aside learning picking for 2 years because I keep getting stuck with chords using the thumb on the low E. Within a few minutes of working on these techniques I made real progress and realised I was going to be able to overcoming this obstacte at last! Thanks!
So happy you mentioned John Prine as he is exactly the reason why I am looking at this... nice surprise!
Nice lesson....thanks, good to see your channel on the up.
Great lesson! Thanks!
I just started to try and do this thumb fretting thing but finding it impossible. And i have huge hands. Feels like my thumb is gonna snap in half. Started to learn Election Day by Blaze Foley and it has a Fmaj7 that requires you to fret the low E string F with the thumb. Can't play a regular F barre chord either cause you have to let the high E string ring open. Hopefully it just comes with practice. That's a cool-ass song that i have to learn. Blaze is the best, if you haven't heard of him. Best songwriter that practically nobody has heard of.
Edit: You just mentioned Blaze in the vid lol. Good stuff.
rolling the thumb...great advice.
I figured out I need to do this to play pancho and lefty.
Thank you 👌
Dave,i think you should make those pdfs and chords you show in the video with a different font. This is good and it's like handwriting but that kinda confuses the brain.Again, great lesson and thanks.
I use that voicing of the F chord, with the thumb on the low E first frett, but I also have my ring finger on the 3rd fret of the A string (just like you would when playing the full F chord). its part of the chord notes and you have a full orchestral chord if strumming. Also, if you keep that voicing and open up the high E with your index finger, you have a full orchestral Fmaj7.... strum all six strings is good
I use all my fingers too, I'd recommend people to play on the upper frets first, like the 5th fret for instance. It is easier to get the thumb over in that position, then slowly go down until they can do it in the first fret. Using a capo could help if the exercise or song requires playing open notes.
Thank you for the thorough breakdown. Super tough with the bar. Oof! 🥴
I have a problem with getting my pinkie and the ring finger together because they are crippled somehow. This is the only way to play F for me so I’ve got things to learn.. thanks man :)
Is it normal that my thumb joint is hurting a litle bit?
I guess so. Hurts like a bitch to be honest
still stuck my thumbs is just too short and still really hurts
Hu I’m ok with everything up to 7 mins in on your video. Then it goes wrong when I bring in the high e string. Didn’t matter how I bend by middle finger when fretting g string can’t stop unwanted muting of b string. Really frustrating probably. means will have to exclude high e
how to if index finger bar 1st & 2nd string?
John Prine is a huge F-an of this. (Thanks for being so honest saying it took you years to barre the F,... same here. )
For me it took about 3 days before finally being able to pull of an F barre chord. However I dont see myself being able to transition to it quickly any time soon. Even with the thumb method its really difficult to transition to it without losing the tempo. This chord fucking sucks man and it makes me want to quit
I enjoyed this lesson, but I would really liked to have been able to see what your right hand was doing as well.
Why isn't the E string higher up right at the edge of the fretboard on guitars? Would be much easier to press then no?
Gordon Lifefoot uses that a lot
The skin on my hand always hits the 1st string muting it when I try to play the full chord with barre
Shouldn’t the 5th string be covered though? If you’re using this technique to strum all of the strings? Or is it not a big difference?
Yeah the ring finger should be on the third fret of the A string to give you that low 5th. Then use the pinkie for the third fret D string for the octave F
Been playing forever and still can't do the thumb wrap around. Maybe because I am trying to barre the first 2 strings? THanks,
If I wanted to barre the first 2 string I would probably just use the full F barre chord, to me the whole point of doing this thumb over technique is to be able to play the open notes as well, which is useful when playing Fingerstyle.
But I'd try to do it your way, just to see if it is possible at all ;)
Does this technique depend on the guitar at all? The neck of your guitar locks a lot thinner than on mine. I have big hands but there is no way i can get any of this working
Haha, his guitar's neck certainly looks narrower than standard, but you should be able to do this technique on most acoustics, unless you have a really wide neck like that of the Seagull S6 (not the slim model, but the original), or a classical (spanish) guitars, those are too wide, I don't think I could bring my thumb over on those.
If you don't get it your first try, don't think twice it's alright.
I see what you did there 😜
Cobain used his thumb often
I feel like you made this more complicated than needed… More simply: 1) Pinky, ring and middle fingers press the A,D & G strings accordion style: 2) Drop the index to the bottom two strings; 3) Thumb wraps over the top string.
All strings still pressed… Viola!
I’ve been using my thumb to bar the top string all my life and find it to be a bad habit. It’s nice to be able to use it, however, chords don’t break as cleanly especially as you progress up the scale. Other issue is it makes it harder to press the other strings properly (you end up pressing more with the finger belly vs. the actual finger tips). My advice is to use the thumb only when needed, but don’t make it a habit.
Destroy the mini boss!
My fingers are physically too fat and short 😫😵💫
