How do they pick the winner, by selecting the couple who leans over backward the furthest, so the woman can mop the floor with her hair? Who outside of these shapers dances this way?

I can understand that it must be difficult for someone who doesn't know anything about ballroom dancing to understand how these competitions are judged. The performances are primarily judged for their technical correctness. As the competition progresses, more sophisticated criteria are applied. They relate to accuracy of execution, dynamic qualities, characterization of the dances, partnering skills, body rhythm, expression of the music, and so on.

I thought this would be waltz. With waltz music. Dancing waltz. This is "show off whatever moves we learned in 5 kinds of dances and do them all together in their extreme". Not waltz.

This is International or Standard dance competition. This is how it is done. American style is different.

Totally agree. Waltz is supposed to be an elegant dance. This wasn't.
