What if human flight wasn't just the stuff of epic comic book stories? Is it scientifically possible to fly? In this series, Joy Lin tackles six superpowers and reveals just how scientifically realistic they can be to us mere mortals.
Lesson by Joy Lin, animation by Cognitive Media.
If we could all fly, it would be considered exercise and we wouldn't do it.
😂
+Preston Dixon true, true
Illuminati confirmed!
hahahahaha.. nice
That's a quote from Ron Swanson 😑😑
TEDed, ruining one dream at a time
right doesn't even make me want super powers
+Cobey Smith
What idiot would even fly that fast or high. Simply fly low with your legs relaxed it's not that hard sheesh
Hey maybe he was late fot class😂
Bobby ellis
Fly at a running speed - _-. They make this more complex than it should
With.... SCIENCE!
you're kind of taking the SUPER out of superpowers.
he's taking the power out of them too. lol
Why is he so negative in all these videos?
If I'm not mistaken, that's the main point of the series.
Or, maybe he's just pointing out faults. If you think about it, it's like human limitations. Our body has a lot of faults, yet we are insanely capable of doing a lot of stuff because we have TOOLS use if we can't do them on our own or if the task is just too difficult with only using our body. That's why we have the support crew at Research and Development Departments. Now if you excuse me, I'll resume reading My Hero Academia.
And power
This video gives you the power to float, not actually fly around.
still kinda cool tho, until he mentions gravity
damn I was gonna say this
*sky swimming*
You just need to eat a lot of beans.
It's not really a *super* power if it needs to conform to the laws of physics. The idea of a superpower is that it's supernatural, meaning above nature, which in this case, also means above the laws of physics. Superpowers, by their very meaning, don't need to conform to the laws of physics, so having a superpower comes with that added benefit.
I completely agree with you, buddy
Ted-Ed doesn't understand comic logic.
But such a thing only exist in COMICS. This video present the possibility of such powers in REAL LIFE, which is quite impossible. It's about being realistic, & "supernatural" is so unrealistic, especially since in real life law of physics EXIST.
Most comics take place in a world similar to our own, and they try to maintain an internal, logical consistency. Because of this, most superpowers are written to break as few laws of physics as possible.
Well its not impossible even if we follow law of physics. Any superpower can be create through technology honestly look at batman. We just firstly need to know how exactly to combine some physics knowledge and put it in a suit like Iron Man.
I think your missing the point, sir. People want to fly like dragonballz not this crap.
Just a shame thats not possible, and if you think it is then please post a video and link it as a response to this one, you need thurst, or the ability to manipulate gravity or the ability to create a warp drive field, but you will move so quickly the chances of you hitting something i mile away and ending up like a pancake is quite easy.
You cant fly that fast as in dragonballz because
um....

If superpowers were real: Super speed - Joy Lin
In DBZ everyone is essentially varying degrees of Superman.
If _everyone_ gets to be Superman, then what's the point of _being_ Superman?
Lugh314 In the DBZ universe, people rely on the life energy called chi (they call it ki) this helps them break the laws of physics. They arent just some alien who feeds off of the sun.
SilverSHAQ Isn't superman really a future baby that gets sent back in time and gets to be 'super' compared to the present humans because that's what people come to be like in the future?
is no one going to discuss how animated and vibrant the narrator's voice is? I'm training to become a voice coach and god that transition between newton's voice and his regular voice is a blessing to my ears!
it's james arnold taylor, voice of obi wan in clone wars
@@kentakagi5214 And Rachet in Rachet and Clank.
Oh my god i just thought he reminded me of Obi wan
how’s that voice coaching going
This isn't flight, this is what you call levitation, flying is a thing where you can move from one place to another quickly, levitating is you just floating in the air and to move you must swim in air.
So flying is moving from one space to another in the air? I guess jumping is considered flying then.
That's what he said. To be able to fly(considering that you can levitate), you will have to push huge volumes of air which is not plausible.
technically flying just means to move through the air i searched it it never said anything about fast
Wow! Birds must really have a hard time then!
it must be really hard since they can't fly higher than a two story building and getting decompression sickness
That's definitely not true for many birds
the point is he mentions if literally fly 5 ft off the ground or as high as a long distance airplane, not this HUGE gap in-between where most birds fly. if you flew as high as a 7 story building all you have to worry about is skyscrapers and the occasional wind turbine or cell tower.
my pet falcon laughs at me when I complain about work exhaustion
2 stories high is not nearly enough to give you decompression sickness he probably means a couple hundred feet in seconds.
This video: "If you flew, you actually wouldn't be able to!"
The Immortality video: *Literally accepts the fact that you can't die and talks about mental stablility*
He does say later on that let's say you're given ability to fly and travel fast
ahhhhh wings work, why not use those?
+michael benzur Still wouldn't work. You'd still die from decompression sickness because your lungs can't handle all that pressure.
Rainy Autumn don't go THAT high as well. i mean there is somewhere between the clouds and the street signs.
+michael benzur
We are rather much too big for that, we would have to be greatly different in structure to pull it off, you would essentially be a freak, oversizied chest muscles, thin arms and legs, hallow bones. you would be a mix of a bird and a human.
allso, at that size, flying becomes trublesome, there is a reason we dont have giant flyers that much, it more comes to gliding at that size, as even with strong wings and a great wingspan, it takes too much energy to fly similar to a swallow. you would have to depend on heat curents and only fly during the day.
Metholus Caedes dinosaurs?
michael benzur
Compared to our bodies we would need great changes to our bodies, we would have a hard time walking about. As I said, we would only be able to fly using updrafts.
Okay... you can stop killing dreams now!

Mia King yet you secretly appreciating this
Why it just ruined pj masks
You know, most flight based superheroes have other superpowers. Actually, almost no superhero in existence has a single, limited superpower like just flight. Superman, Thor, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, they all have loooong laundry lists of powers that compliment each other.
Let's say someone asks you "if you could have one power, what would you choose?" That's what he's covering
i can think of a few. Cyclops from xmen only has laser beams from eyes, that he cant even control. Daredevil only has enhanced hearing that acts like a sonar. Wolverine is a dude with a ridiculous healing factor. His adamantine skeleton isnt so much a superpower as it is a biological modification. If we were to count that kind of stuff than grandpa with a pacemaker and hearing aid should count as a superhero. There is loads of single power superheros.
Zach Passmore Angel from x-men
If fact, most superheroes only have one superpower and then they get some other abilities like being scientists, athletes, good fighters, etc. The ones like Superman, Thor, Wonder Woman and so on are generally called "Power Houses", which means they have a lot of strong superpowers, compared to the others superhumans.
Yeah but all this guys have skills to complement his ability, Cyclops is a strategist and a great fighter, Daredevil is in the top 5 Martial Artist in Marvel, Wolverine is also one of the top 5 with more that a century of combat experience
They forgot that flight found of comic book stories was always accompanied by some unnatural phenomenon that allows air manuverability. Thrusts, molecular control, riding air currents, or willpower has always been with characters who can fly.
You mean additional superpowers. Most superpowers are actually a combination of less notable abilities to make that single power manageable. Hence why Superman has so many powers (Super Strength? Helps to have a super tough body to handle the force. Super Speed? Super Vision and Super Reflexes to react fast enough, etc).
DBZ Characters move & float by expelling Ki energy from their bodies. They actually have a good explainable flight system
fbiuzz inmortality helps fly
The floating could still be a very fun ability, the ability to have 0 gravity.
You could “fly” by pulling on objects around you or using the momentum from running.
Then you just simply stop floating once you’re done
WW1 aircraft where open cockpit and motorcycle gear is enough protection to fly at 250mph and up to 4km altitude in an open cockpit plane that's more than enough for the super power of flight to be better than driving.
Ushio01 they also had a windscreen, heating units, shade and the ability to sit comfortably instead of lying on their stomach and stretching their neck to look forward for hours at a time.
On long distances, Planes > power of flight
It's called gliding. You can glide by using the air around you in a smart way. You don't need to force atoms of air brutally behind you for going forward. You can just let air glide you with a little bit of movement from you so you could master direction.
Adrian Ene Actually, an experienced skydiver can glide and shift their momentum through the air. Why don’t you try and jump off a plane? You have parachutes for safety.
Or! just maybe, there is a point where you can fly above everything but not high enough to experience decompression sickness. I believe this mythical place is called... Just 30 feet off the fucking ground.
That's not how flying works in ANY comic or movie.
Blazeblitz9000
Tis called science fiction no?
@@zaggity Even so, they're not necessarily hard sci-fi. For example, Superman. He doesn't swim, his flight is more psychic, than anything. 90% of heroes who fly fly just like him, with exceptions like Angel or Magneto. A better video would be about the consequences if you had Superman-like flight and no other power, such as wind burns or oxygen deprivation. It's disengenuous to give a person flight and ignore how it actually works in most fiction.
Even further, the example im the video implies you don't have the adaptations for speedy flight, when in reality the body could be capable of faster movement should you evolve that way.
I'd love to see one on teleportation because that's my favourite power.
A terrible failure of scientific imagination by establishing a preface that flying would be based on pre-existing human ability - aka swimming. A human capacity for flight would be more likely based upon fluid force/energy-particle dynamics. not biomechanics.
Lagu Barat Terbaru I think that ted-Ed is talking about humans levitating and moving while levitating without altering the human body. The levitating part is hypothetical and the movement is done without altering the human body. Their point is that without changing the human body you can not achieve movement practically with flight.
@@evanma6198 but the power is supposed to be the power to fly, not the power to levitate so by only giving them the power to levitate you aren't giving them the actual power, you're giving them part of it and telling them to do the rest
@@natemckenzie717 well yeah, but to be able to fly, you will have to push huge volumes of air around you which is impossible if you don't have wings.
@@coyoteflowers5571 levitating is also impossible
@@aldar8240 the video is about the impossible anyways.
My superpower would be to teleport.
Pros: You don't really need anything besides the ability to teleport to teleport safely.
Cons: Drastic environmental change (depending on where you tp to of course)
I'd like Time Control.
Pros: Reversal of Time, the ability to relive life better if it turns out your life sucked, if you make a mistake you can redo it, control of your own age, general time travel
Cons: To reverse or inverse your age, you'd need to move time. It would also change others' age, too.
Now that's playing god. That's like necromancy.
omeganism It's really just time control. No one will even know time was reversed.
omeganism Also what if there's a fly in space you top top? Would the fly just get get absorbed into your body?
I think of it as a force pushing everything away that would disrupt me. Kinda like a fictional force bomb that pushes everything away from it but just miniature.
No talks about super-fart? I would imagine that would be the first thing to say when talking about how Superman could fly. Scientifically the only way for Superman to fly like he does is to have super-fart.
what the
lol kinda its like hes swimming through the air except with a motor some where on him
Superman would just be a biological superweapon at this point
Pushing air like swiming? I thought super heroes found other methods of flighht
+Duncan Graham Hawkgirl and Hawkman have those big ass wings, but if the animation is anything to go by they don't use them for flight either. Or the animators were lazy and didn't want to draw wing flaps.
Max Falto
also, those wings aren't realistically large enough to make a human fly.
This video assumes the power of flight is just the ability to become neutrally buoyant in the air and float around. It ignores that the same powers that super heroes use to fly, can also be used as a form of propulsion.
Goku has energy which propels him.
It takes 20 episodes to charge, though.
+Gabriel Shepard Only when he wants to transform. Hah.
Gabriel Shepard 200*
Some Impersonator It only takes 5 minutes.
Kauê Ernany Cruz pretty sure that translates to two seasons
if we could fly it wouldnt be like swimming, the fastest living things on earth achieve that speed by flying...
Their bodies are suited to flight. Aerodynamic, hollow bones, air sacs etc
The fastest living thing on earth achieves that speed is a peregrine falcon that bomb dives downwards from the sky and uses gravity to achieve it.
What's the point of applying physics once you add something that's not even real and has no explanation as to how you achieved the ability to fly..?
Because taking things at face value and not over analyzing them is no fun.
I've always looked at flying as another form of muscle/bone.
Imagine having wings. If people had wings they'd have wing bones and could freely move them as they wish the way we move our fingers. Now think of flying as another muscle but more of a brain muscle. Flying could initially give off the sensation as if you're forcing a burp or a fart or something. You'd feel your body act and react in order to fly.
You can't really explain something that's never been done. That was just my go at it.
Randy Rodriguez to wrote more accurate superpower in fiction
Telekinetic flight... BOOM!
+Kinzuko HE specifically said flying without anything so no telekinetic powers.
+Tuan Bui Flying without any mechanism to fly is obviously impossible.
RadioactiveSand HE also specifically said "IF"
Tuan Bui If what? Are you refering to the tittle?
Using a gravity (going down at a -45 degree angle and then up at 45 degree angle [gravity free] ) slingshot maneuver, one could accelerate in the air. :)
Destroying childhood dreams
ikr!!!
it's just the hurtful truth
4:33 this is a very frequently reoccuring dream that i have. Its super frustrating!!! Sometimes i run in place, only able to move inches at a time. Sometimes im left trying to "will" myself forward. I wake up exhasted and peeved every time.
Same plus electrocution. Hate them.
Me: *hears about the temperature*
My Reaction: that’s why Superman is invincible.
The power of flight or the power of float? No one cares about the power of float. :/
I'd rather have the power of vector manipulation to bypass all those physics-related problems
Thats a hax wow
It is called superpower for the reason, you cannot apply limitations of normal humans to flight physics.
So that's why during the summer olympics you can see the camera moving slowly following the swimmers
“Without society or the laws of physics, flying would be a totally awesome ability to have”.
Let's challenge the laws of physics in the Court of Nature!
So this video is trying to be serious about superpowers and then it talks about decompression sickness when flying for real? So decompression sickenss happens with fast RELATIVE change of pressure so when underwater, the closer to surface you are the more slowly you have to ascend. Decompression stop is done in 3-5m under water. Thats 130-150kPa compared to 100kPa on the surface, thats 25-35% change on very small distance, which you can pass in less than a second. Now to get the same change in air above surface you need to change your altitude from 0m above see level to 3000m above see level (70kPa), so what is your speed? Even at 340m/s the speed of sound it will take you 9 seconds to reach that level which shouldnt kill you and the higher you get the longer distance you will have to travel for same relative pressure change.
wow
They just got scienced
What about if you could control the friction? We can walk on the ground because the friction is higher than air or else, so if we could control the friction only in some points like legs and hands and could activate/deactivate that power, actually we could fly
2:19. Most users of flight in fiction have explanations for that. Some users manipulate the air to keep them up and also push them. Some users use some sort of energy to hold themselves up and let them move through the air. Some users even manipulate gravity on one's self so that they float upwards and then use gravity to make them "fall" up or to the side.
3:40 Well yeah, but most users of flight also have a power called Aerial adaptation, which negates all the issues about being too cold and stuff, along with preventing you from getting dizzy or nauseous while flying.
I don't think your 2nd paragraph is as valid since that is a seperate power from flight. IMHO a good video would keep it to flight and JUST flight, talking about the negative impacts of the lack of any other superpower like aero-physiology.
They try to hard to ruin these. I knew the flight one would be the trickiest one and with the flimsiest explanation :P
Darth Mortus ikr I was wondering how will they ruin the flight one
DAMN, How do you screw up making an entire "If superpowers were real" video serious. Watch for a tutorial...
I always imagined the flying superpower as having telekinetic powers to push back a large volume of air or other matter to accelerate, to prevent suffocation and extreme temperatures create a forcefield that contains air at a nice pressure and at the same time let's in fresh oxygen.
Bikers in the room know that no matter how much you wrap, if you're going at speed an insect will get inside your costume
Nobody else hearing James Arnold Taylor?
Cagi I was looking for this comment!
So awesome hearing Tidus explain something to you :P
TED-Ed, stop trying to be Adam from Adam ruins everything...
You're starting to worry me.
but adam never does stuff like this
Aram ruins super things.
1. They definitely aren't.
2. Why stop? People like these.
@Novan Myhand I'm obviously joking.
*****
1. Oh, I couldn't tell.
2. "Novan"?! That's a first... no problems though.
I've always wondered why flying in dreams (unaided) is so difficult that I'm pretty much swimming through air..
I love the way you make super powers scientific! I need more of this!
These videos are why I think Iron Man is one of the coolest heroes.
Suit of power armor fixes all the things.
I love Iron Man and he's 1 of my favorites as well, but I don't consider him a super hero, same as Batman. As far as I'm concerned, you aren't a super hero without super powers. I think that's like including veggie-burgers in a contest of regular, or beef, burgers. Now that's not to say they can't hold their own and I love them both, BUT, they are not super...
Lance Elliott Iron man's suit is not that great in reality. It may have weapons and allow you to fly but you wouldn't be able to survive a fall, a rocket or anything larger than, say, a human body hitting you because all that energy would damage your organs (especially brain) and kill you.
Lance Elliott lol
cyberliger0 he said hero not superhero
I'm not sure you are familiar with Dragon Ball Z
Lol
😂😂😂😂😂
+Bernardo Puppin i am a little. i know the meme its over 9000
There's lots of physics in films that don't work out. For instance, I calculated Iron Man in The Avengers in the space ship fan restarting the rotor was seeing about 3,600 G at top speed (60 radians/second in a 10m radius fan = 36,000m/s^2). This would reduce Tony Stark to a pulp inside his suit no matter how tough the external suit was.
His voice acting skills are incredible
great series, very well done.
You've explained floating, not flight.
@OWEN BATES
How?
Honeslty, if you just get a superhero suit (with a helmet and covering you, maybe even with an oxygen tank) you could totally use flying well, like better than the other powers
Even with little air speed, you could still just float in the air almost in place if you didn't exert pressure. You wouldn't need a bed or chair, as you can just lay down or sit in the air. You could hold a handheld device and just float around. Amazing ability, 7/10
What u had wings like a bird and your able to make it appear and disappear
humans are too heavy to fly on their own. it's why birds have specialized skeletons that are mostly hollow, to reduce weight.
you'd need big ass wings that'll get in the way when you fly. you can't fly through the city.
you could fly just above the buildings you would have trouble in Manhattan but i think a realistic flight would be the most convenient in citys to just cut over towns instead of going though them
Also you would have to learn how to fly, as well as learning how to land.
Cherry popper *you're
Is that James Arnold Taylor?
I’m pretty sure it is yes
solution: the superpower where u can just develop wings
I dont know why I feel like I'm in class right now when I'm really outside of my 9 to 5 job waiting to clock in.
Well there go my dream of flying....
just fly at a high altitude with high velocity, the air friction would heat you up and you still wouldn't experience much "drag" from the lower atmosphere. (problem fixed)
... and catch on fire
Allons-y Alonso unless you want to fly around naked
Allons-y Alonso well maybe I want to fly around naked
Tjerk Wigerink
you'd still get hypothermia in the time it takes you to fly up there, especially naked, unless you go up there really fast and then you get the bends, sooooo.... death or death?
We need more comics brought to life like this animation. Thank you 😘
This channel is still very entertaining almost a decade later
most of these isnt what id even use flying for. id hold onto something and pretend like im floating away and freaking out just to fuck with people
+David Tennant Doctor, why is your grammar so atrocious? Also Doctor, why are you swearing? That's not very "doctor-ish" now isn't it?
Oh wow I was real confused for a second Lol. I should probably change that
David Tennant xD
So given flight(floating isnt even a goddamn topic, if you can magically fly you can magically propell yourself), you'll get too chilly if you go up too high and have to be sensible about how fast you go up and down relative to pressures. You could go up in the air and fly somewhat high. Just not too high. And you have to know how fast you can ascend or descend. I do not see the problems here.
I do not like this man.
Plus with the power of Aerial adaptation, you wouldn't need to worry about being too cold or having trouble breathing.
Hknestly i think its weird to just pose with one fist in the air while you move upwards but i’d still want to “fly” just like sit on a cloud and drift around or something
Rapid movement speed, temperature resistance, physical resistance, rapid reaction speed, and extreme energy efficiency (You could need a very large amount of energy, and only need a little oxygen, and food for it) would solve all of these problems except for the bends, but you could still fly at a low altitude, or just increase your altitude very slowly. To solve that, I think you would need to be able to somehow control the air pressure in a small vicinity around you, or be able to create an airtight bubble around you, and have a filter that decompresses the air, and then puts it in the bubble. You would also need an exit filter to get rid of the waste gasses, otherwise the bubble would burst, or even crush you with the extreme density that the small space containing so much air would have, but you have physical resistance to stop that, so the bubble would probably burst first. With all of these additional abilities/tools, I think that you would be able to fly without any problems.
Scientifically speaking, this is very inaccurate due to the many, many variables included in being able to fly.
Magic flying infers full ability to have a controlled flight, all your examples seem to be show casing mentally handicap + superpower.
Now I think what will Falcon of Marvel and Superman of DC will do when they watch this video.
Man, he stripped us out of powers.
What about the power of teleportation (by transferring matter of your body in replacement of the matter in the area selected to teleport. Ex. Teleport into water, when you appear in water, whatever air is in or around you is transferred with unless you didn't take air with you, and water would appear the place before you change places) and the power of convenient
World-wide spread "scientific" video in imperial units. Enough said.
I don't mean to get political but we really need to repeal the laws of physics
that temperature problem showed up in Iron Man xD
Can be solved with fans! Damn this series gives me great ideas for stories I plan to write
Or u could just be iron man
I don't like this guy's voice.
Okay?
Aizen Kent but I like his voice
ikr lol i get that he was trying to be as engaging as possible but it really gave me a headache and was kinda patronising
It feels like he’s talking to a child.
You haven't watch the invisibility video before
One way to bypass this is if your flight ability works with Telechinetic / Psychic powers so that a thin barrier will prevent all temperature and bugs inconveniences.
A specific power could work in various different ways ( read comics or watch anime 🤣) .
Imagining Ratchet sitting on a chair talking about all this stuff, only to have Clank interrupt and correct him with some sassy remark.
this videos ruins my dreams.... :)
¡¿Why?!
Holy crap. Stop doing the comic voices. They're ear-splittingly terrible.
What if you jumped forward then started floating? Would you keep the speed or would it stop by floating up?
@TED-Ed, can you please use metric units in your video? NASA, climatologists and weather institutes uses the metric units in the fields of astronomy, climatology, and space exploration.
In the end, you really need thrusters...jetpacks, to boost your flying abilities. You'd also need a special aerodynamic suit to lessen the friction in the air. Same as how a boat needs and engine and a rotor to move fast on water.
I just found this channel. Love it
flight in comic books is more often attributed to a sealed similar to the type of psychokinetic field propelling your body through space while protecting you from Tiny dust particles and extreme weather that's not turning off a two-year-old Being Yourself by pushing out air instead it is taking a theoretical Field of energy and pushing your body through the air by moving this Quantum field creating slight as we see it in comic books
A scientific channel that uses Fahrenheit instead of Celsius?
No words needed.
There's a huge distinction between floating and flying. The ability of flight can be attained through various factors; Wings (like most animals use), Wind manipulation (Storm from x-men), and Psychic powers like telekinesis (which can augment flight) are just some factors that relate to flying.
I think this video is missing a point butI don't know what it is.
There was this youtuber who came up with a theory about superman. When you see superman flying its seems like something is just pushing him forward while he puts his hands out, it's seems normal but when he lifts something, it always stays the way it was. For example superman lifts a truck with one hand, it should bend but it doesn't. The theory is that superman can control gravity or gravatons around him.
Floating would still be cool tho, u can jump from the ground then enable floating and u will go a higher, and if ur about to fall u can survive from falling to a building.
Also if its actually flying then its just better.
I know this cuz i read superpower wiki’s and i have normal amount of knowledge on how physics works
When someone says "flight" as a superpower, I dont think about swimming through the air, I think more like zero gravity plus telekinesis on yourself
"Narration by James Arnold Taylor." Holy heck! Didn't knew it was him!
It will be hard to maneuver if one has no control of his motion while levitating.
You guys should do a video like this on teleportation, now there's an interesting concept
this series is actually made for distroying your childhood dreams and that little hope you have inside
I would use it to survive any high falls I may encounter, or just jump around cities by grabbing buildings.
That’s why i like to refer to dragon ball Z in regards to flying, it just takes the ability to have the said energy to propel yourself forward, it’d definitely be exhausting to fly faster but you could fly at a casual rate saying your fit in regards to Ki
flying is one if the few if not the only super power power that never appears alone.
it always comes as a package with at least 1 other super power.
laser eyes can appear alone, super strength can appear alone,ice/fire/electricity making can appear alone, but flight always comes as a package.
When I think of having the ability to fly I always assume that means me having angel-type wings
