  • This video details a very easy way to make professional long and performing twisted pair cable or twisted pair wire and what's more it costs next to nothing and only takes a couple of minutes.
Twisted wire cable is often used to keep wires tidy by keeping pairs of them together - it prevents too many wires crossing a workspace, or in an electronics project.
Probably more importantly twisted wire cable reduces the amount of stray pick up and radiation. As the wires are kept together, the fields around them cancel out and as a result the level of radiation and pickup is considerably reduced.
In this video, I show you how to make very good looking twisted wire cable from ordinary wires that may be available in the wire rack, the junk box, or wherever. It only takes a few minutes as you will see.
Using a simple anchor point and a drill, either and electric drill or a hand drill, it is possible to make professional looking twisted pair wire cable.
In the video I also provide some extra top tips to help make sure that the twisted wire cable is right for what you need.

Thank you, I remember watching your video some time ago. Two weeks ago I needed to make about 40 meters of 10 awg twisted pair wire and it was not so easy to accomplish. Definitely had imperfections.

Longer lengths are more difficult - it is all about maintaining the right tension on the wires to be twisted. Not easy though, to do the longer lengths.

Have you considered using this technique for producing bifilar coils?

That sounds like an interesting idea. I confess I’ve never tried it though.

@@ElectronicsNotes Please research the topic, most useful in decreasing the DC resistance of a coil/inductor for a given length of wire.

When attaching a twisted pair to a connector, such as a Lemo connector, the wires have to straighten out in order to enter the connector. Is there a specification or a rule of thumb that states how far from the connector that the twists should begin?

I don’t think there are any specifications for this, but in general I would want to keep the wires twisted as reasonably close to the connector as possible. That is all you can do.
