Nimbus Cloud, I agree that most people do not give the deserved recognition for this album it deserves. My top Queen albums, in order, are: 1) A night at the opera. 2) Queen. 3) Sheer Heart Attack. 4) Queen II.
you should do a review of the live at the rainbow 1974 gig (was released on dvd etc..) , which of course includes many of these songs , the quality of musicianship and Freddie's vocals is amazing !
Congratulations on your likes, I love watching your reaction videos!!! Many other people have said they liked Queen II better than the debut album. I love that one too but Queen I has my vote. Overall first impressions last forever, the front cover with Freddie's standing with the microphone held high and the music itself get more meaningful and powerful for me with time. Rock On and enjoy the music for it endures...
Man, as a big fan, it is so awesome to watch someone who has a real depth of musical knowledge react to Queen, because you just know that they're going to notice, admire and enjoy all the jewels contained in a Queen song. which might go unnoticed by the untrained ear!
I'm 65 and have loved this album since it was released. Great King Rat and Liar, yes "Holy Fuck!!!". Why don't we fans talk about this? We got tired of arguing about it long, long ago. What *you* love about it, is exactly what most ppl *hated* about it in the 70s. Varied sections, key changes, tempo changes, story telling, Freddie's voice, Brian's layered Red Special + fingers, Roger's incredible fucking drums, and John's driving bass. Instead of arguing it's, as Freddie wrote, "LISTEN! I wanna listen ..." Everything we know of Queen before Mack's synths is right here. Welcome to the club. Too bad you couldn't have seen them back in the day. The shows were transcendental. Cheers.
Your right. We dont talk about this enough. Because we are spoiled with choices. Queen II is my favorite. But this could be my second. It does have my favorite song, Liar.
It is an amazing story of how his album was able to be made. Queen had signed a management agreement with Norman Sheffield, owner of the former Trident Studios. They were poor, struggling university students at the time and knew NOTHING about the music business. The contract they signed gave them the right to record at Trident Studio free (but only on off hours) using some of the best equipment available with amazing engineers & producers (something they never could hope to afford). Plus Norman agreed to pay them about £35.00 per week. For this, they basically sold Norman their music. Trident invested heavily in the band, while the members of Queen were still students at the time. The name of the band provoked shock and proved difficult to promote plus their music on this album didn't fit into any genre that was popular at the time. No one knew what to do with their sound. Norman did work hard and played a major role in breaking them into the mainstream by helping them obtain a contract with EMI Records but it took over a year and a half. The album "Queen" did okay but was not a big hit. It was so different that no one understood how to market it, so their sound took a while to catch on but it did eventually. Even though Queen was considered an album band, they did release singles that were climbing up the chart. By the time their 3rd album "Sheer Heart Attack" came out, Norman was now driving a new Rolls Royce and had a new swimming pool but the members of Queen were only earning £65.00 per week (they were still poor). The surviving band members explained that the band felt cheated and abused by Norman when they were producing hit singles without seeing any of the money. Combine that along with incidents such as Roger Taylor being told he couldn't hit the drums too hard as they supposedly "couldn't afford" new drumsticks, they were getting frustrated and angry. As Roger noted, "you see them (the management) running around in stretch limos and think 'hang on there's something not right here!'" The split occurred under very acrimonious circumstances, and the song "Death On Two Legs" acted as something of a final word from the band. The lyrics form a harsh character portrait that outlines the band's full animosity towards their former manager (without naming names). Freddie was reportedly not a fan of the song after writing it, having felt it was too angry and bitter, but Brian encouraged him to complete it. Queen and Mr. Sheffield parted company prior to the recording of "A Night At The Opera". ******** By the way, the sound you hear is Brian May's Red Special guitar connected to a treble-booster, and John Deacon's Deacy Amp. With this configuration, Brian was able to produce the sound of almost any instrument and even almost imitate a human voice. Brian begin building his Red Special guitar when he was around 16 or 17. He was too poor to afford the type of guitar he wanted so with the help of his father, who was a technical writer for electronics, he spent almost 2-years building the guitar of his dreams. He did so well, that he has used this same guitar for over 50 years in live concerts and on 95% of Queen's studio recordings. He built it using only hand tools, savaging parts along buying some others from a design he created. It contained capabilities not available on electric guitars at the time. The neck is from a hundred-year-old fireplace surround that family friends were discarding. The neck was hand-shaped into the desired form, a job that was made more difficult by the age and quality of the wood. According to Brian, there are wormholes in the neck of the guitar that he filled in with matchsticks. FYI - In case you wondered, Brian is wicked-smart. He is actually Dr. Brian May, with Ph.D. in Astrophysics. He worked with NASA on the New Horizons project. Eventually, there were duplicates of the Red Special made as back-ups for live performances or when he doesn't wish to expose the original to the elements. i.e, See the videos for "We Will Rock You" and "Spread Your Wings" which were filmed in the freezing cold out in Roger's back garden (yard). The replicas do not have the reddish hue of the original. John Deacon designed and built the Deacy Amp (John has a degree in Electrical Engineering). One day when walking home he found an amplifier circuit board from a Supersonic PR80 portable radio in a trash bin. Too poor to afford expensive electronic equipment for the band, John decided to see what he could make with it. He worked some magic with electronics, along with the radio parts, put them into a speaker cabinet, and powered it all with a 9-volt battery. The amplifier had no volume or tone controls and for most of its history, it has never broken down thus never repaired. When the Deacy Amp was used along with the Red Special and a treble-booster, Brian could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals. >>
Queen II, their next album, is closest to a concept album with a 'white side' and a 'black' side. After a lackluster reception of their first album (but a serious cult-following), Queen decided to actually reconceptualize their first album. Think of Queen 'I' as a prelude to Queen II. The lyric (finished) version of '7 Seas of Rhye' is quite a romp (you'll understand after hearing it). I, as many people do, believe a story can be spun if Queen II is listened to from 'white side' start through 'black side' finish. Please, please do react to it--I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction! Very pleased to 'meet' you 🙂
I don’t think you can call this first Queen album a concept album because what they did here was actually create a new form of contemporary music. And the rest became history
You're very right to say this album doesn't get talked about enough ! Part of that is some of the Queen fan base who got into the band in the 80's may not have been so interested in the early records , but the old fans who were there from mid 70's still very much rate the early albums. Great review and very funny reaction to "Liar" , your mind was truly blown it seems 😂😂
No synths used on an album until The Game. The first three albums are amazing, a lot of hardcore queen fans love those 3 the most. The Miracle is also very underrated.
Here's the deal. Queen was prolific. They all wrote songs. Played multiple instruments, & sang. ( even John ) Who was very shy. lent backing vocals on rare occasions. His superpower was writing hits. Like. You're My Best Friend, & Another One Bites The Dust. For example. All told they put out 19 albums. In a twenty year span. Two of which were movie sound tracks ( I don't just mean a few songs ) The 1980 Flash Gordon movie is scored almost entirely by them. Only two songs on the Flash Gordon album have words. The rest is a movie score tailored to advance the story. The Highlander is a bit more straight forward. The movie contains several songs. From Their Miracle ( I meant to say A Kind of Magic ) album. That leaves 17 albums, & countless hits. So much music. Covering such a wide spectrum. Means. Many people think they know Queen. Are fans. But. In reality. Have barely scratched the surface. I have been a fan since 1975. ( age seven ) That said. I didn't become aware of their first three albums. Until I was in my early twenty's.
It IS a thrill to watch someone who thinks they know all there is to know about Queen (arena hits) and then you spring something like this on them. It is a winding path with Queen - who wants to follow a straight path?
Yup, got A Night at the Opera as an Aunt's random pick in 76' Ireland. So I worked backwards album wise and fell in love with them all. I can't separate Queen-Queen II. Both masterpieces. I also remember a time when Queen were not cool at all, a lot of 'closet' fans believe it or not. Punk had taken over with synth pop around the corner, until Live Aid that is, I think every Queen fan was shouting "I TOLD YOU!" that day. Glad you got to hear this. :)
Awesome bro!! Love this! Queen albums need to be listened to front-to-back. Queen the album is a masterpiece! It's a musical. People can say what they want, but Queen had already found their sound on the first album. They would come back to this heaviness later in their career, but it never left them! I mean Liar is fucking VICIOUS! Queen the Album is AWESOME, and anybody who don't talk about it is not a true Queen fan! FUCK Radio Ga-GA! Fuck Another One Bites the Dust! THIS is QUEEN in Her Majesty!
I absolutely love Queen's debut album. You will notice Freddie used an ABA form in Great King Rat and in My Fairy King. Very beautifully done. I love the cover art with the way Freddie is standing and holding the microphone high. It was unique and adds a powerful touch. I have been listening to this album since its first release in 1973. Awsome album.
I'm always rather jealous of people who haven't experienced queen's early stuff, especially queen II..to be able to feel those 1st emotions upon hearing it is a once only thing really..so to witness your reaction and from your perspective is simply a joy to behold...thanks mate...
Thanks for an awesome reaction! My fairy king is my current favorite Queen song, but Liar live 1974 at the Rainbow is incredible. Freddie's songs in the early albums tended to be very complex and the meanings of lyrics obscure, although apparently he once told Brian if people wanted to know more about him, it was all in his songs. Apparently Freddie as a child playing with his sister created a make-belief land so that many of these early songs about fairy's and the like are based in that world. However, some say that if you know some of Freddie's life you can understanding the embedded meanings. Freddie himself did not reveal the meanings because he said people should construct their own meanings to music. Can't wait for your reaction to Queen II.
I couldn't agree with you more. I have been a Queen fan from the very beginning and their debut album is definitely one of my favorites. I suppose most young people are more familiar with their later works maybe that is why. They were a very strong and talented band from the start!!!
Great reaction! There are many Queen fans who love Queen's first two albums, in fact there are many people that think it is some their best work. There are actually a lot of big metal bands who lists these first two albums as a big influence. Another album that is also great, and it actually works well with these first two albums, is Queen's last album, Innuendo. A lot of songs such as Liar is very popular live, it was a great live song.
When you talk to a "Queenie" that's been listening to this music for the last 50 years, ALL OF IT is legendary... not to mention timeless!! EVERY album of their repertoire is this good!! Welcome to the Queen Rabbit Hole!! Hopefully, you can get lost in it like millions of fine queenie fans have... and yes, they were phenominal geniuses when it came to writing, singing and performing their treasures. No synthesizers, no autotune, only raw talent!! That's for wonderful reaction and just subbed, so i'll be looking forward to my favorite album, Queen II, another fantasy trip you will NEVER foreget once you've heard it... and yes, they are well known for their transitions, their amazing harmonies and creative ingenuity... they created THEIR OWN GENRE!! Prog rock, rock opera, metal, anything and everything, that was their style!! Thanks again, really enjoyed that...
Other bands have humble beginnings - Queen started with an album like this... 😁😁😁 But seriously, like every phase of Queen, the "early Queen" era (1970-74, before they went "mainstream") has its own fan base who consider the first 2-3 albums as Queen's best work. "Queen" is an excellent album that has just the disadvantage to be a little in the shadow of Queen's next 2 albums "Queen II" and "Sheer Heart Attack": both those albums set the bar incredibly high, and have many fans who consider it as Queen's best (me, I'm very much in the "Queen II" corner).
Yay! Thanks for doing a whole album. If you do them all you will be amazed and completely addicted as they are such an eclectic group. I like some songs more than others but listening to the albums from beginning to end made me hear their utter genius so much more. ❤
Liar is my second favourite Queen song after Bohemian Rhapsody. The "All day long" part never fails to send me into a frenzy of excitement. It certainly is Queen at their most vicious.
Their first 2 Records were very "Tolkein" Like. Dragons, wizards, and fantasy beings were the theme , and all done with a majesty, and virtuoso musicianship that took us by surprise .As a kid in the 70's We had never heard anything like it . No one Had actually. But we all knew we were witnessing Legendary Genius in the making . We were right. As an afterthought, I think many songs from either of their first two records could have easily been incorporated by Peter Jackson into his Epic Lord Of The Rings films. As far as the religious imagery, I think it was pretty much random. I have never heard that this was a concept record. Freddie had a lot of conflict and story in his head at the time so who knows. The last tune seven seas of Rhye is actually the precursor to the full song from QUEEN II , which was the version with Vocals . The Queen II version became their first real big hit.
It is wild to hear Brian May said they never much explained or talked among themselves about llyrics each wrote. I find that pretty wild - so much unspoken yet SCREAMING OUT ABOUT IT IN THE SONGS!
This was the first album I heard from Queen as an 8 year old in the mid seventies (courtesty of eldest sisters record collection) ,my reaction as I recall was very similar without the profanities ,physical punishment was a thing back then and yes have been hooked ever since, absolute genius these 4 guys,to write lyrics and produce music of this calibre at such a young age is remarkable, please react to Queen 2, because us Fans know you won't be disappointed.
Ditto, almost the same story for me except I was maybe 12 listening to my sisters boyfriend's vinyl back in early 70's. It blew me away, prob destroyed my musical life for many years because listening to Queen satisfied so many different styles I almost felt like I didnt need any other "food". I'm still a fan, and this is still one of my favourite Queen albums, also Queen 2 and Innuendo.
Liar? WTF?? WTAF??? Absolutely!! A most epic song on a most impressive first album, and yet entirely consistent with every one of their other albums. I have just spent an hour of true bliss re-listening to this album through your eyes and ears. Thank you so much - I might just put my CD copy on to go to bed with 😊😊
This album is my second favourite after Sheer Heart Attack love it ❤️ Queen didn’t start to make any money until Bohemian Rhapsody & the album A Night At The Opera they were essentially broke they made the earlier albums in studio down time recording in the early hours of the morning when no one else was using the studio they were signed to a production company Trident studios whose bosses were taking all the money riding around in expensive cars & building swimming pools Roger was told to stop breaking drum sticks as they couldn’t afford to buy any more they wouldn’t lend John the money for a deposit on a house as he was getting married they got out by signing with John Reid Elton John’s manager who told them he would sort the financial side & to go ahead & make the best album they could the result A Night At The Opera x
Freddie was so PO’d at all of this, he wrote Death on Two Legs, total diss song to Sheffield, that’s why Freddie bends over and shows his backside at many concerts to tell Sheffield kiss this. If you listen to this, the lyrics version is most helpful.
Queen 1 is an album where the members itself are unsatisfied because of how it was recorded/produced (though fans or listeners love it and really doesn’t mind). The members couldn’t get the right ambiance they prefer in their songs (specifically drum sounds). But they managed to get it right in their second album Queen 2 which they went a little bit overboard in recording. Their first album is often times overshadowed by their massive iconic catalogues but for a debut album, this is definitely top notch.
For those who take a "never mind the production, here's the conceptual-continuity threads" attitude: ua-cam.com/play/PLKdffcKdwgmXxFoF2Y-dC_9tzZgp-H3Eq.html and its sequel ua-cam.com/play/PLKdffcKdwgmUfXI6XmTJQRu7w8Tkr9_7e.html
I LOVE THIS! I found the QUEEN II reaction first and looked for more and found this reaction. PLEASE go through their entire discography - your musicianship is greatly appreciated and as a long time QUEEN fan (I’m 63) it’s so much fun to see others discover early Queen as well!
Great debut album. Queen had been playing most of these songs live for a few years, and had recorded 5 of the titles on a demo tape in 1971, hawked around record companies to no avail. Amazingly, much of this album was recorded when nobody else needed the studios, in the early hours. Also, if anyone made a mistake back then, it would have to be played again. You couldn't drop corrections in like they do today.
Queen has so many good songs and great albums that everyone has a different opinion as to what is best. Hence recommendations are all over the map. The first album is a favorite among many Queen fans. But, like myself, just prefer a different one. For me it is the Queen 2. Add to that most modern Queen fans tend to gravitate towards 80's Queen and its more radio friendly pop sounds. Queens best music is from the 70's. Rather, there most complex music is from the 70's. Looking forward to Queen 2!!! If Queen has a concept album this would be it. Although it isn't... But it could be... you know.
I am a Queen fan about 26 years now and the first 2 albums are my favorite ones! Love early Queen! Also in Queen first album was the song not included on the album called Mad The Swine!
Ok, I am up to Liar in your review, let me say first that I have been a Queen fan since 1974. True Queen fans, those that lived with this band from the beginning, will tell you this is one of their favorite albums, period. For me, their first 4 albums are my favorites. I can listed to them from start to finish over and over again and never get tired of them. If you want to hear songs from their first two come to life, you need to watch the Live At The Rainbow or Live At The Odeon. Two amazing concerts from late 74 early 75. Everyone knows Queen at Live Aid and Somebody To Love Montreal 81, but for me, this is when they were at their best live, the mid 1970's.
GREAT REACTION!! I could tell you really liked Liar…🤣🤣🤣it is also one of my favorites along with White Queen at Odeon Hammersmith (don’t say nobody ever told you about this one) EPIC, one of the most passionate performances I’ve ever seen.
This band made a conscious decision to practice for a couple years while they were all going to get their degerees. They decided not to play the pub scene, did a few gigs at universities, and kept plugging away trying to get a contract. So they were not really well known at all when their first album came out. Queen fans DO discuss this album: there are numerous FB groups where discussion happens in between adoring pictures, album ranking, and Queen history.
Ok that makes a lot of sense. No one my age really uses FB anymore, it's thought of as dying and untrustworthy. It's just when Queen is brought up, generally I only see people talking about the hits and more popular albums.
@@NimbusCloud95 Brian said it was catch 22 You couldn't get anywhere, better venues with a demo...known Couldn't get a demo..get known... John joined them in 71 in Dec they helped a new studio out and their payment was being allowed to make a demo tape Roger and freddie traveled on the bus around london trying to get intetest in it but got nowhere But Roy saw them at the studio ...they got involved with Trident in 72 but it was a bad deal but atleast they got to use a studio If they were willing to use the studio at 2am!
@@NimbusCloud95 I hope you will keep your promise to review the Queen II album when there are 50 likes! It's lots of fun for us Queen fans when the reviewer knows a bit about music!
Seven Seas Of Rhye wasn't completed at the time so appears on the next album in it's full glory. Rhye was part of the magical world Freddie invented. He and his younger sister would play make believe as children.
LOVE the Video ! Thank you ! I love all their records. Even Hot Space …. WHICH IF you re order the songs on THAT record. You’d have an entirely different experience….not that I mind any of them 😂 ! You should definitely also listen to the Innuendo album in its entirety…if you have already please forgive me I’m new here 😊 ! There’s also the movie soundtracks from Flash Gordon and Highlander ….❤And if you are searching for recent material New Horizons by Dr Brian May. Guitarist and Astrophysicist extraordinaire. NASA asked him to write a song …. It’s exactly what you would expect .. perfection! Rogers has a record called Gangsters Are Running. The World . 😊
You really need to watch the live version of Liar Live at the Rainbow '74. If you were impressed by the album version, your head will explode with the live version. 😁
Yup it's a great debut album. It's not a concept album but Freddie's songs were pretty much religion themed. On Keep yourself alive it seems they made the conscious choice to have one line start when the previous one wasn't yet finished, I think the result is great. On Queen II things get even more interesting (IMO). It is more prog and more of a concept album though not quite. The sides are labeled as "side white" and "side black", the former with songs written by Brian (plus one by Roger), the latter is all by Freddie. Brian does lead vocals in one of his songs for the first time. Many songs bleed into each other so you'll have a hard time finding where to pause.
@@NimbusCloud95 If you decide to do it in sections, the connected songs are: - Procession + Father to Son + White Queen - Some Day, One Day - The Loser in the End - Ogre Battle + The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke + Nevermore - The March of the Black Queen + Funny how Love Is - Seven Seas of Rhye
@@mori1bund Even though Father to Son does go into White Queen, I still see White Queen as a seperate song cus compared to like Procession + Father to Son, it's not quite a very interesting transition there.
Their second and third album, Queen 2 and Sheer Heart Attack are also amazing! So don't say now that nobody told you that... :) I am telling you now: they are awesome, i think even better than their first, so cant wait to see you checking them out. Great reaction. really enjoyed it!
I might get some flack for this but I feel there are two kinds of Queen fans. The ones who know this and love Queen II even more and then there are those who are Queen fans that only own their Greatest Hits albums. As much as I love their hits, I love way more of their deeper cuts that were never released as a single and therefore got no radio play. I've been a life long fan since the 70s. When my eldest son told me they were having twin boys I laughed and said "you have to call them Roger and Freddie." My daughter in law said she loved the name Freddie so I have a grandson named Freddie, sorry Rog they just wouldn't go with it. A couple of years later they got married and daughter in law chose to walk up the aisle to Fat Bottomed Girls. Keep the Queen reactions coming. 👑 🤟💋
LIAR IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES AN I LOVE EARLY QUEEN ,THIS ALBUM AN QUEEN 2 ARE AMAZING AN VERY UNDER RATED ! SUCH A SHAME BUT THEN ALL THERE CATALOG IS EXCELLENT MY GOD 🔥👑♾️❤️💜❣️💗💞🌹🌹🌹🌹😘🥰🤩😎😍😁🤗🤪👀💕🍀🌟💫💎💎💎💎🤟👏✌️AN I LOVE UR WTF ?!?! I JUST CAME ACROSS YOUR CHANNEL AN LOVE UR REACTIONS WELCOME TO THE QUEEN ARMY ENJOY AN WE WILL ENJOY YOUR AMAZEMENT AN LOVE FOR QUEEN 👀✝️🌹🕊️✌️
Late to the party, but just came across this. I am a huge Queen fan and love everything they do. BUT, I have always preferred the early Queen albums. This record and Queen II are my favorites!
Remember that there was no computer recording. There were limits to how many tracks could be on a tape recorder. The best equipment was only available at high hourly rates. Most albums cost $10,000 to $50,000 back then.
Here's why: they have so many great songs, and many hits, this LP gets lost. BUT to us oldies who grew up with Queen, it's never forgotten. Liar was a concert tour staple well into their 6th album, eg.
My favorite song when I was about 15 the night comes down... I just now realized that when that song came on my turntable I would literally go out my window and start walking around at night outside... I had no ill intentions I was just walking around. nobody was in town it was a small town just felt like the thing to do. it was fun then I came home and went to sleep...I love this record
As it began, what a good idea ! I love ALL Queen album, and you're right all queen gems are already here. They were already hard workers and professionnels, even if they didn't earn money. But they believed in themself, especialy Freddie
I totally agree with you! Their two first albums are not mentioned so much but for me they're up in the top of Queen albums! Keep on going with your awesome channel!
Thank you so much for your great reaction to this epic album! I agree with you 100% that this (and the other early Queen LPs) rarely, if ever, get talked about, which is a crime! To me the first three albums by Queen are their best but I get so frustrated trying to get anyone to react to them. I can't even guess how many times I have suggested people do so, but only one has even tried. My guess as to why people don't suggest it is that many Queen fans started listening with Bohemian Rhapsody off the fourth album and never went back. Queen, like LZ and PF are definitely ahead of their time. One day you will need to add the four great albums by Supertramp to your list - "Crime of the Century", "Crisis? What Crisis?", "Even In The Quietest Moments" and "Breakfast In America"! Keep up the great work on your channel!!
Pretty great debut album, right! Queen were in a category all by themselves and no one could touch them, IMO. Thank you for giving this album some love. Great reaction to Liar, by the way I had the exact same reaction when I first heard it.
Not hidden man. A fantastic album with some killer songs. A bit of legacy from Smile in which Tim Staffel is still credited. The first few albums were tied up up in legalities from Trident. Queen 2 was where they really hit their studio mastery. Sheer heart attack was where they really moved into pop. Before it all coalesced into Night/Day albums. If you love Queen 1 - I reckon you’ll love Queen 2 as they had more studio time. Awesomeness
Just subscribed! Well that was two première for me, listenning to their first album and watching someone react to a full album. I can predict that you will love March of the black Queen and The prophet's song. Can't wait!
At 24 minutes you ask why this album is not talked about more often. Very good question. As a fan for over 50 years (yes I was 6 when this came out and listened with my dad) I can say without reservation that the first three albums are not just what but also who Queen is and (well, apart from two and a half albums in the 80's) they have always been true to themselves and thankfully we as fans have enjoyed the journey with them. Queen, Queen2 and Sheer heart attack are the best of the best. Interesting but the song Sheer heart attack was not on the album Sheer heart attack.
Roy Thomas Baker produced the first several Queen albums , he helped define the Queen sound . Modern Times Rock and Roll' preceded Stone Cold Crazy which many consider the very first thrash metal song .
Those haunting guitar sounds are the essential Brian sound that I love so much , just like the ones at the end of Killer Queen , you'll see what I mean .👍😉
Hi there! Congrats on doing a really good job with Queen I and II reactions. Waiting impatiently for your journey through next Queen albums. Take care!
I had fun seeing your reaction to this great album. Back in the 1970-ties I had a similar experience - I got to know Queen through their famous more albums: A Night at the Opera, A day at the Races and News of the World, and only after a couple of years I discovered their first 3 albums and found out how great they were, and they have ever since had a prominent place in my Queen preferences.
I am Soooo pleased you listened to this album I too have always thought it was greatly underrated QUEEN II is just as good (maybe even a little better) It has a side white and a side black instead of A & B Practice makes perfect after all Sequels aren't always good but in this case I will leave it to your judgement I'm afraid you will have to listen to the whole thing too What a shame I look forward to your thoughts
Great reaction to a superb debut album, it only gets better, now you have got to listen and react to Queen ll, then Shear Heart Attack and you must also listen to Freddies Barcelona album he made with Montserrat Caballe the Spanish opera singer. Then listen to some of Queens live performances especially Live Aid in 1985.
one of my favourite albums, special to me.. i don't talk or comment about it because yeah even among hardcore fans they prefer queen ii over this imo (not me). many thanks for listening to the album ♥
Keep Yourself Alive was their first single, it could get no radio play. The album was recorded at all times day or night when ever it wasn't being used by more important bands and acts, after thought by their production company. No record deal at this point.
Love this album and the next. It was hard to get a distributor believe it or not. They were absolute perfectionists and had a lot of faith in themselves. Liar is so great live.
Queen 11 (seven seas of rhye continues here) and all albums that followed are fabulous..Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A day at the races, The Game..and so on...Innuendo, their last album together while Freddie was alive is brilliant...and the last Made In Heaven has God type songs..
Such authentic reaction. Another new subscriber for you. A lot of these songs were not on the radio at the time and that's how most of us got our music. I think they were forced to take off mad the swine from this album but it's also got some great religious themes which were very common at the time. Keep going!! 🎤🎻🕊️
Just subscribed, you’re absolutely right! This album gets no mention. It’s always been my favorite album. I was blown away by the clarity (for the times) of the recordings. I had this album on vinyl, CD and now digital. Love you insights!
Queen, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, and A Night at the Opera are all pretty equally great, although I still have to say that Queen 2 is my favorite Queen album. The second side is one of the best album sides ever. Always sad that Queen and Zeppelin are the only two classic rock bands that I never saw live. And no contest that Freddy was the greatest male rock vocalist ever.
MOST people who say they're Queen fans joined after BoRap BUT us that knew Queen since this album got tired TRYING to get people to listen to the first 3 albums.
W T F is right !!! I’m obviously late to the party…… You are right about LIAR ( watch it LIVE… I’m sure you did 😂✌🏼) Crawled out of my rabbit hole to see what’s happening up here re QUEEN ? Hope you ‘re still around 😊😂✌🏼👑👑👑 anyway …I’m loving your channel ☺️
Every Queen album is a concept album, in some way. You'll have to dig deeper and find it out for yourself. The ending Seven Seas of Rhye is the outro and the intro to next album.
Already over 100 likes! Guess I'll be reacting to Queen II soon 👀
You probably already know this, but Q2 is the fan favourite.
Overall first impressions last forever, the front cover with Freddie's
standing with the microphone held high and the music itself get more meaningful and powerful for me with time.
As Roger noted, "you see them (the management) running around in stretch limos and think 'hang on there's something not right here!'"
The split occurred under very acrimonious circumstances, and the song "Death On Two Legs" acted as something of a final word from the band.

By the way, the sound you hear is Brian May's Red Special guitar connected to a treble-booster, and John Deacon's Deacy Amp.
Queen didn't used synthesizers until the 1980 album The Game. What you heard was Brian May's guitar.
The Highlander Soundtrack is the Album A Kind of Magic
Yup, got A Night at the Opera as an Aunt's random pick in 76' Ireland. So I worked backwards album wise and fell in love with them all.
I can't separate Queen-Queen II. Both masterpieces.
I also remember a time when Queen were not cool at all, a lot of 'closet' fans believe it or not. Punk had taken over with synth pop around the corner, until Live Aid that is, I think every Queen fan was shouting "I TOLD YOU!" that day. Glad you got to hear this. :)
Sir, just the fact You listened to Queen’s first album, shows Your Intelect and perception has gone through the ceiling, i mean it, awesome !! 👍
I've always loved 'Great King Rat' most of all. Top 10 Queen song for me, no problems. SO heavy, SO proggy and so epic.
Love Queen 1...particularly Liar and My Fairy King
I absolutely love Queen's debut album. You will notice Freddie used an ABA form in Great King Rat and in My Fairy King. Very beautifully done. I love the cover art with the way Freddie is standing and holding the microphone high. It was unique and adds a powerful touch. I have been listening to this album since its first release in 1973. Awsome album.
Wow ur really an og fan!
Wish more people listened to this album. Raw beginnings.
But seriously, like every phase of Queen, the "early Queen" era (1970-74, before they went "mainstream") has its own fan base who consider the first 2-3 albums as Queen's best work.
This was my first Queen album since then I followed them always getting better....
Wow, I had no idea that's insane!
Freddie was so PO’d at all of this, he wrote Death on Two Legs, total diss song to Sheffield, that’s why Freddie bends over and shows his backside at many concerts to tell Sheffield kiss this. If you listen to this, the lyrics version is most helpful.
Been a Queen fan since 1974 and this is still one of my favourite albums, and this is a debut album LOL it's superb.
In hindsight, even more revealing.
Liar is one of my favorite songs. You should watch it live. ❤️🔥👑
But it could be... you know.
Miss you Darc!
QUEEN II & INNUENDO for life!
That bass in Liar. Love it. Yes John
@@NimbusCloud95
Brian said it was catch 22
You couldn't get anywhere, better venues with a demo...known
Couldn't get a demo..get known...
John joined them in 71 in Dec they helped a new studio out and their payment was being allowed to make a demo tape
Roger and freddie traveled on the bus around london trying to get intetest in it but got nowhere
But Roy saw them at the studio ...they got involved with Trident in 72 but it was a bad deal but atleast they got to use a studio
If they were willing to use the studio at 2am!
@@NimbusCloud95 I hope you will keep your promise to review the Queen II album when there are 50 likes! It's lots of fun for us Queen fans when the reviewer knows a bit about music!
This has always been one of my favorite Queen albums. Thanks for giving it some respect.
Maybe I'll do it in sections
@@NimbusCloud95 If you decide to do it in sections, the connected songs are:
- Procession + Father to Son + White Queen
- Some Day, One Day
- The Loser in the End
- Ogre Battle + The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke + Nevermore
- The March of the Black Queen + Funny how Love Is
- Seven Seas of Rhye
@@mori1bund Even though Father to Son does go into White Queen, I still see White Queen as a seperate song cus compared to like Procession + Father to Son, it's not quite a very interesting transition there.
@@rainy9010 Good point.
Fuck yeah exactly!
👑 🤟💋
No synthes. Just Brian's Homemade Guitar. BTW The screams on My Fairy King are Roger. He has the dog whistle pitch.
Stay with Queen, you can't go wrong! Queen forever...also ,love those glasses:)
But they believed in themself, especialy Freddie
my second favorite Queen album. Queen II is my all time favorite
Great king rat and my fairy king were Freddies
Apparently he announced after this song casually from now on my name will be mercury!
Pretty great debut album, right! Queen were in a category all by themselves and no one could touch them, IMO. Thank you for giving this album some love. Great reaction to Liar, by the way I had the exact same reaction when I first heard it.
I saw them play Keep Yourself Alive and Liar in 77 (I was 14). Great show. Yes, I'm lucky.
I agree about why does this not get talked about. The first four Queen albums are their best imo. Liar is an epic journey.
I personally love you and your channel. I'm always happy to see it. These songs are deep, fun and 😍
They were asked to try out some equipment so got some nighttime studio time. Great first attempt with very little.. love their early stuff.
I am Soooo pleased you listened to this album
I too have always thought it was greatly underrated
QUEEN II is just as good (maybe even a little better)
It has a side white and a side black instead of A & B
Practice makes perfect after all
Sequels aren't always good but in this case I will leave it to your judgement
I'm afraid you will have to listen to the whole thing too
What a shame
I look forward to your thoughts
Amazing reaction! Severely underrated album, for sure
The first five are my essential Queen albums , Queen has been my favorite band since my first listen when I was 12 years old , way back in 1974 ! 😉
Keep Yourself Alive was their first single, it could get no radio play. The album was recorded at all times day or night when ever it wasn't being used by more important bands and acts, after thought by their production company. No record deal at this point.
Freddie was learning what to do with his voice. Band didn’t know how good Freddie was on the piano yet.
What i meant is most people shy away from it, but You did an awesome job.
I’ve always loved this album! “Keep Yourself Alive” get occasional AirPlay here in Maine. Early Queen is phenomenal!
The best Liar reaction i have ever seen😍😂❤
Such authentic reaction. Another new subscriber for you. A lot of these songs were not on the radio at the time and that's how most of us got our music. I think they were forced to take off mad the swine from this album but it's also got some great religious themes which were very common at the time. Keep going!! 🎤🎻🕊️
Just subscribed, you’re absolutely right! This album gets no mention. It’s always been my favorite album. I was blown away by the clarity (for the times) of the recordings. I had this album on vinyl, CD and now digital. Love you insights!
In my top 3 Queen albums...will never knock Queen II off top spot, but a fantastic album :)
my favourite album, thank you for reacting!
Thank you 👑👑👑
Think fan may have thaugh you hab all ready hear,WAS one of their best❤😂❤Freddie Forever❤❤❤❤
I love Queen through and through but their early to mid 70s stuff was just on another level
Check out the album liners on there first four albums at least, they make a point of saying no synthesizer’s we’re used on this album
I think a lot of reactors just sleep on Queen’s first two albums, but they are phenomenal.
Personally my favorite Queen album!
Yup, those are guitars, Queen had to add 'no synths were used' footnote on albums afterwards, until they finally did in the 80's.
MOST people who say they're Queen fans joined after BoRap BUT us that knew Queen since this album got tired TRYING to get people to listen to the first 3 albums.
you do really good reviews man ! did you say you did "Sheer Heart Attack" album ? can't find it
