Nah, Connor doesn't get it for good reason. Slice of life anime are made for people had a lot of difficulty touching grass. And I'm not talking about shut in basement dweller, I'm talking overworked salaryman just coming home at nine or ten and want something comfortable to watch. If you look at the broadcasting schedule, you'd find that many perfectly wholesome SoL anime aired close or even AFTER midnight.

Slice of Life for me is when I can watch it without stake, so I don't really have to be tense or thinking about the plot and the repercussions, or even the mechanic of the plot. I watch it to see people being happy.
But also I enjoy staying in the parks for a long time. So you can be both.

Fun fact about the parks and city planning thing in Tokyo:
Urban planning in Tokyo actually DID include lots of parks in the cityscape, in fact, the original plan for Tokyo across its development was even to encircle the city center in a belt of greenery and have people come to work in the city from smaller satelite cities, that would surround and be included in said belt. They started multiple attempts at this during Tokyo's development, but failed again and again.
The problem with Tokyo was, that due to its massive growth, said belts would be broken apart time and time again, since the city expanded so rapidly (from somewhere below 1 Million people living in the urban region back whent he city was officially founded and renamed to Tokyo from Edo, back in 1889 to more than 37 Million living there today). Back then, of course, Tokyo wasn't merged with Yokohama, Chiba and Saitama the same way it is today, where the whole Megacomplex is basically one big urban area. If you know, where to look you can even still see that the current parks in Tokyo, more often than not, are a remnants of said efforts, since they align with those planned "belts" of greenery.
Did my bachelors dissertation on the topic of urban planning in Tokyo across the last 150 years, was really interesting to see, how terribly hard it was to accomodate that many people in one city in such a comparatively short time, and the developments, challenges and failings it led to. That's also why I was able to look into some of the old urban development plans as a result and know about this little known fact.^^

and i think that's why a show like non non biyori was so successful because lets be honest its not a masterpiece but if offer great escapism. for people that grew up in city and live in it for all their life, seeing these girl having fun in this small village in the countryside was honestly refreshing. natsume and the book of friend and mushishi too give those vibe even if they have more fantasy element to them.
me i grew up in a forest but move to the city when i was 10 years old, so i really miss the countryside and nature and so when there is an anime that came out in these setting, i'm really grateful ( because lets be honest 99% of anime take place in tokyo or another big city).

To me, it's a little bit of both.
I love watching people experience things, especially things I never do, and a lot of times, watching these things inspires me to go out and do it, like with Yuru Camp, it made me want to appreciate nature more. Same with K-On, something about watching people form a band and play is something I never could pull off in high school, and seeing that made me proud of it, and made me want to at least relearn guitar.
But at the same time, watching these, I draw parallels to my own life and it makes me appreciate these things more. Going back to the yuru camp example, while I don't go camping, I go on walks, and while going on walks, I was able to better appreciate nature, the sky, and the overall quiet isolation of this time away from the hustle and bustle.
And I think more than anything, I just like people having a good time. Obviously, whenever, IDK, Naruto is happy, I am too, but with slice of life, the problems are much closer to reality, and because nothing is happening, and I'm not stressed about who is gonna die next arc, I can appreciate the atmosphere, the scenery, and the smaller interactions. I think I just like seeing people happy, and it's emphasized way more in slice of life than other genres, while at the same time, it helps me be happier in my life because I notice more of these little things.

I wonder if Asian cultures have secret Santa, because that’s basically a bunch of randomized surprise gifts 🤔 also, when they were talking about borrowing money from friends, I was surprised nobody mentioned banking apps. In my country (Croatia), we basically have phone apps made by the banks where if you put in your friend’s phone number and they confirm it, you can send them money directly from your bank account to their bank account in one click. So like, if you don’t have cash on you, and a friend pays like 10 euros for you, you can immediately just go into the app, type how much money you wanna send (10 euros), press send and it gets transferred from your bank account to theirs the same or next work day (if it’s the weekend). It saves you the trouble of having to remember how much you owe somebody and having to pay them back in the future.

Personally for the conversation of Slice of Life anime, obviously I'm all for a hype adventure full of action and huge fights as much as the next guy, but for me it's just calming sitting down and watching people, usually in a strange little situation, wether it's that people live with all mighty Dragons, the weirdness that is Komi's school or Vampires being a thing, just going through life, having some small personal issues that maybe you have as well, and just learning to deal with them, no real action or anything, they just learn a few lessons and make friends, nice and simple.
    It's just nice and wholesome

The phone/SIM part was so mind blowing to me.
Here in Germany you can just buy SIM's with a contract plan at any supermarket like LIDL or ALDI and it will just work on almost any phone. Also every SIM allowes thethering by default and as long as your contract plan has internet volume in it you can just use it.

I had a friend who was struggling, but still gave me gifts every time we met. Though grateful, I always felt burdened and told her not to, but she kept doing it, and so I brought small gifts every time I saw her too. But she would get annoyed and not even address the gifts I gave to her. She hated getting presents herself. I think that's why she started ghosting me after a few times of that lol. It still baffles me though because she always insisted on giving me something, it felt like we weren't on equal terms.

And then they made rules in my country where you could enter clubs and bars restaurants with a negative test from the last 24 hours so I kinda just went with that, clubs and bars were mostly still closed anyway so we just went to raves and did home drinking so i barely needed it. Never caught covid, untill the last month which was the same month they removed all restrictions in my country. so I just called in sick for 3 days untill my cold was over, never got actualy sick or noticed anything.

Phone shops want to overcharge you for everything and force you to get new contracts every time. Someone gave you a coffee or helped you through a hard time? Kind of slides and is not that noticeable, yet you are very thankful. Someone gifts you a gift? There is physical prove handed to you out of nowhere that they do something for you, making you think if you truly done enough within the friendship to deserve the present.

In high school, I loaned money to my friend who didn't have cash to buy a cafeteria meal and she swore she will pay back. It happens a couple times and she always pay back. Until one time she didn't pay back the next day and she's always busy so I didn't say anything since she's been good in the past to pay back, she will remember.
    But she totally forgot.
When I later asked her for my money back, she totally forgot she had borrowed money from me and asked how much she owes.
I felt bad bc she felt bad that she forgot. I felt like a bad friend, the type who cares about only money. I think she tried to play the sad card hoping I can just drop the asking for money back.
But the money was part of my emergency money from my parents in case I needed to pay for the bus fare so not having cash on hand makes me anxious and my parents didn't know I was loaning out money to friends.
I think bc of that, I'm reluctant to loan money. But if the amount was so small then I let it go and don't expect them to pay it back. One time I didn't loan anything but I did a favor for a coworker. He was grateful and he says he will pay back with a cookie the next day. Next day and he forgot so I didnt remind him. Until a week later, when i heard coworkers talking, someone mentioned in conversation about baking cookies. That's when he remembered he owed me a cookie. He turned away from the group and walk up to me and asked why I didn't remind him about the cookie. I shrugged and didn't expect a cookie since it was only a small gift and if he didn't feel like getting it for me then that's fine. He eventually got cookies for other coworkers and gave me one, apologizing he forgot and he did mean to give me a cookie.

It’s interesting hearing the COVID restriction discussion. I visited in late November/early December for the first time and had people tell me to pull up my mask when I pulled it down to scratch my nose, or get a good breath in a stuffy or small room etc. and then also went to a comedy show with heaps of other locals and foreigners and not a single person wore a mask, or in the small izakayas in places like Koenji, Kichijoji or Asakusa, no one was wearing a mask. It’s definitely a bit ludicrous at this point. Wearing them on the train is pretty fair, but wearing them at the gym when everyone is within spitting distance, and are touching all the same weights, benches, machines etc. it just doesn’t make sense to me, given the extremely relaxed approach we have taken here in Australia.
