I once knew a girl, a "Carol" and I think many of us did. She deserved something better than what life gave her. She wasn't satisfied with what I could give her, she asked for more and never found anyone who gave her more than promises. She failed and is no longer alive. This song is so true and brings back very painful memories. Thank you Stan.
Calling out to anyone listening in Aug 2021 still loving this song from three decades ago. Takes me back to my first love. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. 🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧❤🙏
I can't tell you the number of times I would listen to this 10, 15 times in a row. Delicious groove, layers of sound, great percussion, like a bag of your favorite candy, just can't stop! Stellar cut from an excellent album.
I hated this song back in the days. Took 4-5 years before I learned to appreciate it. I sure love it now. Thanks Stan, you are an amazing musician and storyteller ❤️
Talk about somebody being far ahead of his time. Many years from now, his works will probably be re-discovered and it is a shame that persons of today missed out.
First heard this on a late night music programme in the UK on its release and I loved it immediately. Bought the 7" single the decided just to buy the album. Mosquitoes is an amazing album, like others have said...Stan Ridgway is a great storyteller.
remember this back in '89, was a big hit on the alternative scene. Barny Simon on radio 5 used to play it alot, thanks for uploading this and the great memories.
UA-cam is the greatest.I have this and another of Stans's and love them. Now at 3 in the mornign I get to see the video.thank the heavens above for UA-cam>
I think I was at that club too. Was it "The Strand" in 1990? That club is no longer there. He was walking across the tables and stepped right on my salad. What a great night that was.
Calling out to carol She could really twist the screws What'cha doin' monday And are you back on the booze? Now, I've been dooin' some thinkin' About colorado springs A dirty denim jacket And a seven-dollar ring Well, I've been keepin' busy I've got lots of pots boiling on the stove Who's that in the background I'm sorry that I asked, I guess I should have known Callin' out to carol on the telephone call Message on a wire comin' through a wall Talk about old times but not too long ago Carol was the girl that everybody got to know When'd you change your number? hey, carol! It's different than you had Have you got protection? I know some police are bad But that's not why I called you up, now You know I quit that scene I told ya 'bout your pictures I guess I'll buy that magazine And I still remember All those days we spent alone You went one way while I went the other Well, I guess sometimes, that's the way things go When they called me in the morning And told me that she'd gone I didn't want to hear it So I just hung up the phone Callin' out callin' out to carol Callin' out callin' out to carol Callin' out allin' out to carol Callin' out to carol Callin' out to carol on a telephone call Message on a wire comin' through a wall Is this line in service, coperator says no But carol was a girl that everybody got to know (PRONTO LA TRADUCIRÉ AL ESPAÑOL)
Someone with more skills than I have NEEDS to do this as a Tiger King parody! ASAP! I’ve always liked this song - from the first time I heard it in the 1990s. The lyrics wouldn’t even have to change very much!

Wonderful ballad. Wonderful Stan.
Always believed Stan to be one of our national treasures for songwriting and originality.
He just stares at you dead on, and sings into your soul.
Nostalgic song, reminds me of nice school time in 1989. Played at Radio10 NL yesterday but no longer available on Spotify :-(

I saw him at the Whiskey a Gogo on Sunset Blvd around this time. His music was hauntingly unique and very inspiring.
Bought the album on the strength of that song and don't regret it at all.Not seen that video for years thank god for 'you tube'.
Great Storyteller and musician, no doubt

Hola desde Uruguay ✌✌🤩🤩
I saw Stan live twice at the Whiskey. He is a very cool artist. And his songs are all either great or just very interesting.
My man! Saw him at the old 9:30 Club in DC. The song "Camouflage" was amazing.
Underrated 4 his time up there with Peter Gabriel

this song rocks
Calling out to carol
She could really twist the screws
What'cha doin' monday
And are you back on the booze?
Now, I've been dooin' some thinkin'
About colorado springs
A dirty denim jacket
And a seven-dollar ring
Well, I've been keepin' busy
I've got lots of pots boiling on the stove
Who's that in the background
I'm sorry that I asked, I guess I should have known
Callin' out to carol on the telephone call
Message on a wire comin' through a wall
Talk about old times but not too long ago
Carol was the girl that everybody got to know
When'd you change your number? hey, carol!
It's different than you had
Have you got protection?
I know some police are bad
But that's not why I called you up, now
You know I quit that scene
I told ya 'bout your pictures
I guess I'll buy that magazine
And I still remember
All those days we spent alone
You went one way while I went the other
Well, I guess sometimes, that's the way things go
When they called me in the morning
And told me that she'd gone
I didn't want to hear it
So I just hung up the phone
Callin' out callin' out to carol
Callin' out callin' out to carol
Callin' out allin' out to carol
Callin' out to carol
Callin' out to carol on a telephone call
Message on a wire comin' through a wall
Is this line in service, coperator says no
But carol was a girl that everybody got to know

LMFAO
Has 20 kids and counting!!
blijft gewoon een toppertje
En een breezer ananas
Who is it we're seeing those flashes of? Pietra?
Carol committed suicide...this is Stan's apology.

Scarcely anything in literature is worth a damn except what is written between the lines.
