- This clip incorporates nearly 5 minutes of footage already shown, sorry, purely to try to show as much of the whole story as possible, although work to be done after the short ride would include raising the gearing a little by fitting a slightly larger 18 tooth engine sprocket than the tiny, 16 tooth item seen here and the proposed fitting of new clutch plates to address the clutch slip experienced during the short ride. I think the tyres might feel more reassuring in the mud!

Well having had both different horses for courses. A BSA Alloy Clipper [ally head and barrel ]on basicly a B-33 bottom end made a nice comp to RE Bullet. I always thought the earlier Goldies with the longer rod design made for a more flexiable motor. CB &DBD's were more for road racing =max power.
The most terrifying thing about the scrambles Gold Star is the 7" front brake. It wouldn't stop my sprung frame B31 let alone a DBD34 Goldie. There was a theory going around at the time that somewhat inadequate front brakes taught you good cornering skills................
As I recall Paul the cush drive sleeve nut on the crankshaft should have a locking steel washer which after fully tightening the nut you reached into the spring coils and turned the edge of the washer in two positions into milled recesses in the nut's inner face.
Saw scrambles Goldies race - in deep mud - at Ringwood Dorset about 55 years ago. Not for me, I had my DB34 Goldie in Clubmans trim.
The old Goldie went up the hill as though it wasn't there! And what a sound on the open pipe ! High Compression and lumpy cams not good for regular tickovers, Looks like it could have done with an "other handed carb to put the tickler on the outside and easier to reach! Amazing you have been a bike mechanic for dear knows how long and never ridden a Goldie? Amazing!! Well you can tick that one off your bucket list Paul!!!
Back in the days before I started making videos, I restored and rode a plunger framed 350 ZB32 Gold Star briefly, and I have recently ridden an ABSAF Gold Star 600, but that is all, so far ...
Well done for not falling off! knobblies are awful on the road, but what a beauty
if the owner wants to ride it and enjoy it some hybrid (part knobbly) tyres
would provide easily ample grip for every situation. ! rarely would full
knobbles be needed ,,id get those off,, "like yesterday" ,great video Paul .
Hi , an amazing bike a friend had one back in the 60,s and rode scrambles , when you had to be built like a brick S house to handle it and not fall off .Thank for the video .

Sounds gorgeous, but the noise of that would drive me insane after about 5 miles.
Full-on badboy ride. No reg plates, no speedo, illegal nobblies, no silencer just lovely open pipe.If Insp Knacker had pulled you over he would have had a wet dream with the Motor Vehicle Construction and Use Regulations infractions and no reg plates etc. Lovely bike, hopefully not tuned to the Clubmans specifications as it will be too highly strung for off road use by anyone with less talent than John Banks or Arthur Lampkin.
I could have used you in 1970 when I tried to synchronize the carbs on my 69BSA Rocket3 which I could never get a smooth steady idle. Great video!
A cacophony of extraneous noises of which I have no idea of how appropriate they were but an intrepid ride considering your observation of the condition it’s in, well done 👍
Hi Paul what a sound! iconic bikes have their place like this one but very focused for scrambles or the like. The road going versions are great to see but ownership is not easy (a club member has one) The daily rider dreams of these bikes but most probably better off with a more easier road going model.
Luv that Scrambler seen few @ HAWKSTONE SHROPSHIRE as teen CCM also, John Banks, Arthur Browning many other UK competitors besides .. ..69 & on Capetown 75' Yz Yam250 later many more b4 ..ps just remembered Eastwood also seen so many back in days of BLACK AND WHITE TV watched all sat morning ..
Arthur Browning is a name from the past. Is he the guy who was about 6'10" tall and rode a bit of speedway?

I can completely understand the trepidation riding a machine like that, at least the modern knobbie compounds are a lot better than those of 30 years ago. I wonder what the story was about the doubler on the down pipe. I also wonder how much ShellMex you'd get for 1'4d in todays market! Great job as usual, thank you.

Nice bike and video, but no need to pump the tickler on the carb...it just wears it out. Hold it down till it floods, then kick it over

@@paulhenshaw4514 Yeh I had it confirmed by a Gold Star walking Bible yesterday at Pant Y Dwr show. He turned up with an unrestored BB34. Another rider rode up from Carmarthen on a Panther model 70 350 sloper, said it was faster than his B31.
I wonder if that was my mate Dave From Llandysul - he owns a Panther Model 70 which I worked on for the previous owner, and which features in one of my ride videos?

Until one rides a Goldstar you can't imagine the pulling power, made my b50mx seem feeble. Was the clutch slipping a bit?
The clutch was slipping, as it was knackered, but I rode a B50 MX which would have eaten the Goldie for breakfast!
@@paulhenshaw4514 More meant top end performance bike like Ron Halam's green monster dbd or Dave Kath's old ride. On the unit single 100mph plus gets stressed I think the goldie revs a bit longer does ton easier longer? Now I never rode a Mead and Tomikinson or CCM though.
The B50 is longer stroked than the Goldie - 90 mm vs 88 mm and it also has a lighter crank. Our RE 500 racer also has a 90 mm stroke and can rev to 8,000 rpm. I think the B50's big advantage was being more compact and light than the Goldie, though.

Knobby's with that much tire pressure on hard surfaces would sure feel like you were riding on marbels !
Probably, and the knobbles were that big and far apart that didn't help either. Wheeling the bike around, both wheels felt like our old British Thrippenny Bit coins!

Sorry but how does the spark get weaker by retarding the ignition, surely it just shifts where it happens which is why it becomes harder to start?
The mechanism in the magneto moves the timing of the points to a position where the armature has turned a bit further before the points open when retarded and this later timing position is after the optimum magnetic flux point for creating a spark, so the spark is weaker as a result.
there is an ultimate position of the magneto armature in relation to the points , you can tweek it to give big spark at full retard and the mag will get stronger at high rpm any way
but you have to have a good knowledge of mags
its realy a compromise but when working and set up properly they cant be beaten

That bike should not be on the public highway surely? No lights, no registration plate, no silencer that i could see, and I bet no tax or insurance!
People are quick to jump to conclusions sometimes, aren't they? I am insured for all the bikes I work on and ride. Lights etc not required in daytime. MOT not required on machines over 40 years old any more.
