@tikkiu7345 Just quit. John Calvin, one of the earliest leaders of the Protestant Reformation, can sum up everything beautifully for us: “While Paul claims for himself the appellation of father, he does it in such a manner as not to take away or diminish the smallest portion of the honor which is due God. […] God alone is the Father of all in faith […] But they whom he is graciously pleased to employ as his ministers for that purpose, are likewise allowed to share with him in his honor, while, at the same time, He parts with nothing that belongs to Himself.” Viewing Biblical phrases in their proper context is essential if we are to continue living the Christian life. In this particular case, the context showed us that Jesus’ admonition to call no man father was not to be taken literally. This removes a substantial weight from our shoulders, and allows us to once again focus on that which is important: becoming closer and closer to God.
@tikkiu7345 Get a new line of argumentation. Paul calls Timothy his “true child in the faith” in 1 Tim 2:1? Does he mean he is literally his father? No. His spiritual father. Same thing for priests.
@tikkiu7345 Like many Orthodox clergy, I have lost track of the number of times my Protestant brethren have objected to the priestly title (in my case, “Father Lawrence”), citing the Bible which commands that they “call no man ‘Father’”. They are, of course, thinking of our Lord’s words in Matthew 23:9. If I am feeling puckish and mischievous, I sometimes respond with a simple denial, insisting, “No, the Bible doesn’t say that” just to wind them up and make the final riposte more satisfying. It is not particularly sanctified, but it is fun. Admittedly the Good News Bible renders the verse “you must not call anyone here on earth ‘Father’”, as does The Living Bible and the New International Version. More accurate versions such as the King James, the RSV, and the New American Standard do not render it this way, since the Greek reads, πατέρα μὴ καλέσητε ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς/ patera me kalesete umon epi tes ges. Note the boldface ὑμῶν, so that the verse is rendered more accurately as “call no man your father on the earth” (thus e.g. King James). What is the difference between “call no man ‘father’” and “call no man your father”?-the difference is the difference between a title or form of address and a relationship. It is the latter which Christ is describing and proscribing, not the former. The Bible never says, “call no man ‘father’”. Indeed, such a command would be bizarre in a Middle Eastern environment, where the term “father” was the usual honourific for a male person of age. That is why the term is on the lips even of the rich man in Christ’s parable: he calls the venerable patriarch “Father Abraham” when he calls out to him for help (Luke 16:24, 30). Christ’s word about never calling anyone upon the earth their father finds its true meaning in the context of His denunciation of the Pharisees and Rabbinic piety of the time, which is why the command shows up in Matthew’s very Jewish Gospel and not (say) in the Gospel of Luke, which was addressed to a Gentile audience. The whole of Matthew 23 consists of a collection of the varied critiques of the Pharisees Christ offered at various times. The fact that there are seven “woes” in the chapter pronounced upon the Pharisees (in verses 13, 15, 16, 23, 25, 27, 29) suggests that this is a finely-crafted compendium of Matthew’s, summarizing what Christ said on a number of different occasions, and not a single sustained oration by Jesus. The chapter constitutes a dossier of denunciation, a warning to His disciples not to follow the practices of the Pharisees and the scribes. One of the practices which Christ warned His disciples to avoid was the insistence upon public honour and loyalty. The Pharisees loved respectful greetings in public and being hailed with the term “Rabbi” (literally, “my master/ my great one”). (The term at that time was as an honourific, and did not denote a clerical office, as it does today.) The Rabbis would accumulate disciples, men whose task it was to memorize the views and words of their Rabbi and make them their own. Indeed, those teachers claimed a greater respect from their disciples than was given to one’s parents, since they reasoned that one’s parents gave only earthly life, while the Rabbinic teacher gave spiritual and eternal life. They functioned therefore as gurus for those followed them as their personal disciples. Our Lord insisted that such total allegiance and such blind loyalty had no place among His followers in His Church. The leaders in His movement were never to function as such fathers, commanding personal allegiance and accumulating personal disciples. Such complete allegiance could only be given to God, their common Father in heaven. On earth the only Leader to whom such devotion should be given was Christ, the Messiah of all. His disciples were all brothers, and even the leaders among them looked to the same Leader and Lord, the Christ of God (Matthew 23:8-10). In all of this, what mattered was where the heart was, and to whom one gave ultimate loyalty. The Rabbis of the Pharisees claimed personal loyalty from their disciples as their due in a kind of personality cult. Such a cult and such devotion were to find no place among Jesus’ followers. The issue was not so much whether one calls one’s leader either “Father Tom” or “Pastor Tom”. The issue was the relationship between the leader and the led. One can be led by Father Tom and address him as “Father Tom”. But Father Tom can never command ultimate personal loyalty-nor, as a true disciple of Christ, would he wish to. The temptation to accrue personal disciples is a perennial one, and not confined to the Pharisees, scribes, and Rabbis of the first century. We can see such a cult of personality and the demand for personal allegiance in some televangelists. It is not necessary to name names; the names are already well-known. Though not using the ancient Middle Eastern honourific “father”, such men function as fathers to their supporters, authoritative gurus, demanding like the Rabbis of old personal loyalty (and financial support). It is usually otherwise among the Orthodox and those groups that use the title “Father” as an honourific for their clergy. Orthodox clergy all dress alike-the same black cassock, the same pectoral cross. Their teaching is the same, so that it scarcely matters whether one goes to Father Lawrence’s parish or Father Justin’s. The use of common title and of common clerical garb are intended to obscure and impede such personal style as would promote a cult of personality. Different clergy have different gifts, of course, and different parishes have different strengths and weaknesses. But the same Orthodox Faith is proclaimed by all the Orthodox clergy in the same way. There is not a Laurentian Orthodoxy here and a Justinian Orthodoxy there. Ecclesiastically speaking, there is but One who is the Teacher, and all clergy are brothers (Matthew 23:8). Christ is our earthly Leader, and He has taught us that God in heaven is our Father. We therefore call no man on earth our true and life-giving father apart from Him. by Fr. Lawrence Farley

Thank you for this father. I have left the UK to seek a life in eastern Europe as I am fundamentally unable to live the live in accordance with the scriptures here in the UK. Temptation surrounds me and while I have acquired some virtues and overcome certain temptations through the grace of our Lord, some are still persistent, idleness being the key in this. I understand that I am being called home to actively participate in the Orthodox Church and to do honest work with the hands that I was given. I had become very disillusioned with the evil I was participating in with regards to the working culture and white collar jobs here in the UK, and while I would have loved to become an honest farmer in the UK and distanced myself from technology and the new-age ideologies spreading in the big cities, this is not economically viable, and I think that this has all been planned very carefully and with malicious intent. I am glad that I have received this calling and I understand what is required of me. Thank you for all your lessons father, I know it is in our best interests to remain humble before God, but I am eternally grateful for your guidance. I wish you all the best for helping me understand where I stumbled and how I could overcome this.

@tikkiu7345 "And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame'" (Luke 16:24). "For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel" (1 Corinthians 4:15). Since the early days of the Church, bishops and presbyters have been called "father," not because they take the place of God, but because of their fatherly care for their flocks; they lead people to God, and they exercise fatherly authority within the community. And you know what? Protestant proof-texting and deliberate ignorance get really old. Try thinking about Scripture and other spiritual matters with a bit of nuance for once in your life. Fundamentalism is a disease.

@@paulgemme6056 Again, we're Orthodox Christians, not Roman Catholics. But since you're merely copying and pasting things with no thought: My copy and paste: The Bible verse Mt 23:9 is copied and pasted, or mentioned/referred to, in nearly every Orthodox Christian comment section, sometimes without commentary, by Evangelical Protestants who do not rightly interpret Holy Scripture. That very literalist reading of Matthew 23:9 is dispelled by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:14-17, him calling himself a father of his spiritual children, especially St. Timothy, and saying there are other fathers. "Paul’s Paternal Care 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church." (NKJV / OSB NT) Christ referred in the passage Matthew 23:1-36 to those who *lord* titles over others as the Pharisees did often and didn't practice as they preached others to do. It was not just an admonishment against calling a man 'father', but 'teacher' and 'rabbi' as well (doctors too), which I have never seen Evangelicals object to hardly. It seems to be a double standard as most are anti-Roman Catholic which sadly they lump us in with them. The title 'Father' our Presbyters use is not lording a title but it is a spiritual truth as they *are* the fathers of spiritual children just like St. Paul was over his flock. And it can be gathered that indeed St. Timothy and others called St. Paul 'father' as it would have been only respectful, him being their spiritual father to help them grow in the Faith, shepherded by them who were their flock. After all, the flocks were referred to as 'children' by the anointed Shepherds of Christ. And that's where we get it from. It is from the very earliest of the Church. Also, Christ refers in many places to fathers both biological and spiritual (the Old Covenant Patriarchs and Forefathers). Christ does not say when He refers to them as fathers not to call them such as they are *legitimate* fathers of children. It isn't just a haughty title being put on them. They do not lord titles over others as this vocation, fatherhood, is a reality both to biological fathers and spiritual fathers. If you like to understand this passage in the Holy Scriptures better, these two videos might help you, especially the second which goes into the Second Temple era usage of 'father': ua-cam.com/video/j4F-xow3Vzg/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/JCDujtjiXT8/v-deo.htmlsi=7TAUIbhx8phy6ds6 May God bless you. ☦ No debates, that is all I have to say.

This Lent I have been challenged by the devil. He filled me with ambition and pride, and led me to a extreme fast, which my body could not resist and the day after I was eating A LOT and behaving selfishly, and it caused me great guilt. This guilt caused me to feel unworthy, and I skipped mass, stopped reading my Bible for 4 days and stopped following my guided Lent program. I went to confession yesterday and the Priest was so ❤ understanding and he gave me light. He helped me see when I was blind. Today I picked up my Bible again and the guided prayers WERE EXACTLY WHAT MY SOUL NEEDED, AND EXACTLY WHAT COULD HAVE AVOIDED THE PAIN AND SHAME I ENDURED THESE PAST FOUR DAYS
During those 4 days My love for God dimished. I was tired. Completely exhausted and frustrated, because days prior I had felt his Love SO strongly and I had been able to share with atheists and their wheels had started to move. Why???? Why would I hit a low point right after a high point? CAUSE THE DEVIL ATTACKS US WHEN WE MAKE PROGRESS AND HE DOES NOT WANT THE GOSPEL TO BE SHARED
The devil's anger will be ignored. Known as refused. Stop letting Satan take your blessings away. That's what he wants is to take everything you care about away. When you show him you're not scared of him and his demons by getting everything you care about back, that's letting them know they done fucked with the wrong person. The devil can jump up and down and scream and cry and kick and throw things and throw his biggest temper tantrum all he wants. He's just mad because some people are not letting him do bad things to them. He strongly hates seeing someone happy and is against happiness. The devil wants everything lost and destroyed. He's a liar, a thief, a destroyer, he's selfish and doesn't like to share anything, and he's not anyone's friend. He don't wanna bless someone, he wants to destroy. That's what he's so desperate for.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner. Amen.

But since you're merely copying and pasting things with no thought:
My copy and paste:
The Bible verse Mt 23:9 is copied and pasted, or mentioned/referred to, in nearly every Orthodox Christian comment section, sometimes without commentary, by Evangelical Protestants who do not rightly interpret Holy Scripture.
That very literalist reading of Matthew 23:9 is dispelled by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:14-17, him calling himself a father of his spiritual children, especially St. Timothy, and saying there are other fathers.
"Paul’s Paternal Care
14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church." (NKJV / OSB NT)
Christ referred in the passage Matthew 23:1-36 to those who *lord* titles over others as the Pharisees did often and didn't practice as they preached others to do.
If you like to understand this passage in the Holy Scriptures better, these two videos might help you, especially the second which goes into the Second Temple era usage of 'father': ua-cam.com/video/j4F-xow3Vzg/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/JCDujtjiXT8/v-deo.htmlsi=7TAUIbhx8phy6ds6

Beautifully expressed, dear Fr Spyridon! It is truly wonderful that God calls us to seek things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father. Things of earth pale in comparison to His unspeakable goodness and glory. Forsaking everything of earth restores our dignity, even now -- not that we never fall short. How else can we be light and salt in a fallen world?
Lord God, thank you for giving someone as flawed as me the opportunity to grow closer to you, even if I fail. How can we deny such love and forgiveness?
