  • Conch are fast growing marine snails that feed on algae.
    They move from the shallow water into deeper waters as they grow and return to the shallows to lay eggs.

    Not really. When it hatches from its egg it has a free swimming life stage and is called a trocophore. At this stage it doesn't have a shell that looks like the adult

    So the larva is a slug like creature, and it grows the shell off of it? the shell is created by the larva? not found?

    I have one as a pet but it doesn’t move around much it’s about the size of a lime and just kinda curls up inside its shell and doesn’t move much. Is that normal? It has plent of big rocks with algae and sea grass and seaweed and sand

    How do the shells grow?? Are the shells "alive" or does the conch keep building the shell bigger?

    • @cherylmillard9329

      The mantle of the gastropod adds to the shell seasonally, somewhat like a tree adds rings.

    do you have any information on freshwater conchs I found one I live in Missouri in the Ozarks and I found a conch that was about the size of my fist on a dry bed in the 11-point river any information you could share would be greatly appreciated thank you.
    I'm interested in raising crawdads mud crabs and other things as alternative food inside below ground greenhouses.

    Is the shell part of the body like a exoskeleton or is it not attached to the animal?
    And how do they grow the bumps on the outside?

    • @GGFilmsChannel
      @GGFilmsChannel 3 місяці тому

      The conch secretes calcium carbonate to create it's shell. The animal livs inside the shell. Too understand the bumps, look up 'spiral ornamentation'. Thanks for watching!

    Wait...so the shell itself grows? Without an animal in it?

    • @Microdocs
      @Microdocs  2 роки тому

      It's a good trick. The conch does grow its shell. The conch secrets calcium carbonate which hardens into the shell. It expands outward at the edges. So the center stays smaller but the farther out it goes, the shell is bigger. They do that until full grown at 4-6 years.
      A growing problem comes with ocean acidification. As the ocean gets more acidic, it can start to eat away at the calcium carbonite that all shellfish use to create their shells.
      Take a look at "The Acid Ocean" ua-cam.com/video/cPf05z-4nWE/v-deo.html

    • @Microdocs
      @Microdocs  4 роки тому

      Hi Greg, Good question. These conch are in the Bahamas on San Salvador Island. We brought them in to an island lab for short term study. A small DNA sample was taken and then they were returned to the eel grass beds where they live.

    • @greg3087
      @greg3087 4 роки тому

      @@Microdocs cool! Is it a population study? Ive been diving in Cuba for about a year and have been seeing them around. The local natural resources folks on GTMO have put a no take limit on them. Now i see them all over. Massive and beautiful. Just trying to learn about life history some. Found another site with some good info too. Thanks.

    • @Microdocs
      @Microdocs  4 роки тому +2

      @@greg3087 The goal was to dig deeper into understanding the conch lifecycle and use the DNA to add to the data pool so other scientists can see if the conchs on this island are related to the conchs on that island. So not a population study of numbers, but a study to see how reproduction patterns. Good to have a limit. They're pretty easy to find and people like to eat them. So long term, that means they could be overfished.

      Hi, Yes. The shells get bigger as the conch grows. It's very smooth inside the shells. The fun thing is when you see the conch look at you with eyes that come out from inside the shell on stalks.
