I actually think the only flaws the sequel has: 1. Not even bothering to mention Dana, the older sister! Originally, the script was going to mention her & say that she was away at college and too scared to return home. WHY did they not film that, I wonder?? 2. The editing is a little choppy, they leave out why Tangina says "I don't really trust my instincts anymore." & other background on Taylor & Kane's spiritual background. But even so......this film still gets a 9.8/10 from me! It is fantastic!

When he visited our kindergarten class on grandparents’ day, one of my classmates screamed “Oh no! It’s that evil Reverend Kane from Poltergeist 2!” and my class panicked.

This is a very terrifying yet inspirational scene. On screen it’s terrifying, behind the camera inspirational because Julian Beck (the preacher Kane) had been diagnosed with stomach cancer three years prior (1983), in the scene you can see how he’s using his ailment and putting it to work for him as he presents himself to the family as a mortal Man, but you can see the corruption exuding from him. I wouldn’t know if we should define this as character acting, method acting or both. But I think it’s inspiring that an actor in his position was able to give such an iconic scene that holds up decades later.

Julian Beck's "Reverend Kane" gives more horror and menace than a whole army of CGI-created zombies. A backstory on the Reverend Kane character would make a great "prequel" to the Poltergeist movies. He's a sort of combination of a Reverend Jim Jones (of the Peoples Temple) and Freddy Krueger.

According to some lore (and even hinted at in the Bible), that Evil just 'loves an invitation'. Not only is it easier, of course....but it seems to make Evil more powerful....AND possibly diminish the victim's ability to ask Good for help. Same here! While I always found this scene to be powerful & more intense than audiences at the time (including myself) seemed to realize....I also recognize WHY Reverend Kane is so scary. Its because he is NOT always an in-your-face Evil. He is charming, friendly, congenial, innocent, even shockingly-soothing (see how Stephen almost believes Kane is his friend!). That is truly scary to have that ability. He even has the ability himself to reign his own Evil in....& walk away calmly. Wow!

Some of these scenes must have been shot weeks apart as Julian looks terribly ill in some of them, especially when he is talking through the screen door. If you see him in the Cotton Club a few years before this he's healthy and looks completely different. What a performance. The part where he changes his facial expression from anger to indifferent disappointment at 5:50 is stellar acting. He haunted my dreams for years when I was a kid after seeing this on TV. Poltergeist II would have been so much better if he could have filmed more scenes as it pretty much goes downhill from here when they switch to using effects to replace him. May he rest in peace.

I thought that at first too, until I read that the makeup crew actually did the scene in sequence....but applied more & more makeup to Kane as the scenes were filmed...to make him look more 'undead' & also more demonic. Then, when Stephen rebuffs him.....they make him look more 'human' again.

But when you see a performer who has had years to refine, and then a story is built and dialogue is perfect for the part, it's really a sight to see.

To see how fast his cancer ravaged his body, Julian Beck was in The Cotton Club in 1984 and he filmed this only a year later. If you see him onscreen in the Cotton Club and then this, it doesn't even look like the same person. But still, even with his health being as bad as it was, Beck put in a masterful performance in this film that doesn't get enough credit. Reverend Kane should be listed along with Darth Vader as one of the best movie villains of the 1980's.
