One word--Wow! Even in its unfinished state, it is very evocative of the place and time. In fact, it makes me homesick for my youth in the 70s and 80s in the Pittsburgh area.
The N scale open competition layout, just want to tell you that I think you did a great job on the layout, really love all the detail you put into the layout.. Great job, I can see you really love the hobby..
I have the same turntable and your tip will help me use it. Installed quite a time ago . The layout is cool and I lived there as a child and remember all the sites you are modeling. I like the steel mill backdrops. They make the scene well. Nice post!
DJ thanks for the tour and I guess I'm over a year late. I don't think I have ever seen your entire layout. Looks like you're going to have a nice addition. I am from Ohio and lived about 35 minutes west of Pittsburgh. If I had to equal trains to a city it would be Pittsburgh easily. You've done a great job of catching the essence of that area. Keep the progress coming.
I really hate industrial, polluted areas, but man! If you're gonna model 'em, do it like you've done! This is just amazingly well done. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see what you do with those Pennsylvania mountains.
Met you at Greenberg’s last month and bought a couple rolling stock. Asked you about steel mill models and we had nice discussion. You are quite a master of the scratch build; I’m getting there slowly. Thanks for the new vids. Looks like a much improved camera as well. Makes all the difference!
Hey my friend! How are you? Nice to hear from you. I did a lot of work last night too, so I can't wait to show you the progress when its finished. I am having fun with it.
LIKE THE LAYOUT. it's looking good, the turn table is something I wasn't looking at as I don't think they had one in colton ca but thanks for the great review, I want one now! Your daughter is growing up fast....looking foward to seeing more, your layout is great....thanks for sharing....Jack
This is an awesome layout! I really like the Kato turntable and and how you’ve wired it. The scratch built structures and industries are very nice as well. Cheers! Kaustav
I gave away my bike this summer, but I walk the trail often for inspiration and exercise. PLEASE make sure you subscribe to my channel and check out my website and look at MORE, MY RECOMMENDATIONS, RAILWAY & LOCOMOTIVE HISTORIC SOCIETY. I am now the treasurer for the new steel city chapter, and we are trying to preserve the roundhouse in McKeesport for our museum. Thanks David. If you see me on the trail, say hello!
You have done an amazing job capturing this area. As a courier for a medical group, I pass the Union RR yard 6 times a day and have taken lots of photo’s of that area. My dad spent 40 years at USS Duquesne. So m very familiar with that area as well. PS i also worked at Edgar Thompson in the old open hearth area while in college. I hope you get the new red and yellow paint scheme and caboose that they use now.
Very nice tour DJ, and your layout is awesome, I really like how you have taken the real places and added them to your layout. I watched your video on "The Flat Layout" and found your words to be very true. Planning on a better use of topography, even though the yards that werein my area were, once you left the yard there was a grade in either direction. Thank you for that video and all the other and for sharing. Muse
Great layout update, DJ! It's nice to see you and Morgan getting into the holiday spirit! I'm so glad you made this video since awhile has passed since you uploaded your last one on UA-cam. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and Morgan. -from Tom Pilling
The last layout update was in march, but my tutorials all have shown some new areas of the layout. I'm working on the roundhouse scene mostly now. I have been cranking out at least 2-3 videos a month, some on how the railroad works. I have some other ideas on paper I hope you like. Whats challenging is trying to do these with CSX ringing my phone, lol.
hey dj, cool tip i think you should know when scratch building, dont use the expensive stuff for roofs, go to home depot/lowes and buy a big sign for like 4-5 dollars.
I enjoy your modeling and prototype videos but I know the most important thing you do is being a good father to your teenage daughter! Best wishes and Merry Christmas!
Nicely he! I think in modern times had you derailed or even had a knuckle break the train would have automatically gone into emergency stop. I still liked the video and my favorite locomotives are the EMD switchers MP15ACs, SW1500s, MP15DCs. I've liked the ever since I was a kid and read the book "Your Freight Trains" written and illustrated by George J. Zaffo. The book itself is sixty years old copyright 1958 and I first read it in a Carnegie Library in my hometown. It documents the New Haven Railroad. It has several illustrations Alco S1s and S4s that run open face out . Its neat to see the engineer at the controls and this was back in the day when firemen were next inline to operate the locomotives. I had always been obsessed with finding that book and it took me fifty years to find it. I had been searching on and off but through the miracle of the internet and EBay I found two copies of the aforementioned book. The truth be know I ended up with all of Mr. Zaffo's books to find the one I was looking for but, it is truly a pearl of great price. Again I enjoyed your video and look forward to what you've done in the future.
I think the Union Railroad had a repowered Baldwin, looked like an AS16m or As616m. It was probably scrapped by 1987, but still something cool to see done in N scale.
I am always thinking about it, but the trucks are not available in n scale other than 3d printing. Then its part gp 18 I think for the body, and a low nose, and all above my pay grade, lol.
can you do a video about the history of the union railroad, and have you ever thought about working for the union railroad, also awesome layout, with amazing scenery
When I was in my early 20's I went to their office in Monroeville. I asked the HR lady if they were hiring. She responded "we aren't hiring, and if we were, we'd hire the engineer's kids first". I said "That's nepotism", to which she responded "...and your point???" So that is why I never got hired in the early 1990's. I hired with CSX in 1999. I am always thinking of new video ideas. The book "union Railroad in color" is still my all time favorite book.
In their defense, that was then, but now many CSX guys I worked with, have quit to go work there. At least there, there is no staying in a hotel like we do at CSX.
Looks fantastic DJ thanks for sharing.. I'm always curious to ask about space for layouts.. around how large is your room and is this a basement? looking for an idea of how large a space I would need.. I love large layouts

Your layout is looking good, you’ve put a lot of key Union elements into it. I especially like the engine shop. Nice work my friend. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with the roundhouse; but, I seem to recall another video by some youtube modeler about space wasting turntables...hmmm, I can’t think of his name right now...
In my defense, I sayunless your layout is modeled after a particular place that is a focal point, to which this place holds a special railman spot in my heart.
So a white and black wire from layout to reverser two wires to DCC controller wheres the connection to the power supply (outlet) ?? also thinking of modeling conway yard north of Pittsburg west side of river any ideas or suggestions ???
I would like to drone conway, but there is nowhere good to park and set up without causing attention. Considering the area is miles long, simply pick the things that stand out to you most to model. Just go for the feel of the area, because if you try to match it too much, you'll go nuts.

I see in most yards turntables, reversing loops or a WYE, So I assume that is common thing. Is there any type of standards, or logic to yard setups you can share with me? Thanks for all your info and your videos they are greatly appreciated and happy holidays to you and your family.

nice video DJ - layout is coming along nicely. The coal scene is fabulous as well as the highway overpass. Thanks for sharing!
Well done young man, glad you rectified the turntable issue

I've been following before. Great to see this fabulous creation.
Thanks for the tour, your layout is growing and looks great!
