- Today we look into the mystery of what happened to the Tonk. Sometime during late 2022 the Tonk vanished from Google maps leading many to believe it was removed permanently. Join me as we investigate the whereabouts of this legendary monument.

We Italians have many flaws, but we try with everything at our disposal to maintain every war monument to their best.
Yes,we lost the Second World War,but this doesn't mean that we shall leave every monument remembering the fallen soldiers of that war.
Also, classical Italian take: the Town Hall NEVER answers to anyone, even to the Head of State lmao
Not gonna lie, you are the first Italian on the internet who doesn't try to claim Italy won the war by switching sides.
@@TitaniusAnglesmith It was still a lost. "Switching sides" means that all the country decide to change allies. After the 8th September,Italy was split in half and we passed 2 years fighting each other.
It was a lost,at maximum a stalemate
@@TitaniusAnglesmith italian here, it's definitely not a win in our book: economically-wise we crashed hard and most of the workforce was dead because of the war. We barely managed to get out of the crisis and get ourselves a small golden age before getting wrecked by the Lead period and various political disasters.
based italy
Chad comment. Last paragraph gave me a good laugh, looks like local governments around the world have something in common lol.
It honestly makes me happy to see that it's been given maintenance since it's a memorial, and I think many people forget about that
Hey, here is a notification to let you know that your comment got 1.8 thousand likes!
@@timharnans Thanks bro. Honestly I'm surprised lol
People forgot about me?:
Yea it came overwhelming for me how selfless they are to reminds and give respect of the pass
Considering the larger barrel, I suppose we have the Tonk 1 Variante A now.
lets hope it never fires that cannon its gonna fly into the building behind it!
That's it I'm calling the up-gunned Tonk 1 Variante A the Tonka Tank!
why A ? why not B ? or is it meant like the first is no variation? But would the introduction of a variant not automatically make the first non-variant into one?
questions over questions...🤔
@@pseudonym745 Yea kind of like M1 and M1A1
Carro Mod.44 Tonk Variante A ? 🤔 (I'm French but my Italian sucks more than English lol sorry neigbours ^^)
I'm a fan of this Tonk Rehab arc, he needed a win. His triumphant return was a great reveal in the plot.
Can't wait for the next adventure !
They got tonk looking pretty again to assert dominance over those unappreciative.
I really want to believe that so many people came to the town for the tonk that the memorial was repaired
I could bet on this, to be honest =)
@@fridaycaliforniaa236 yeah same
with how warped are the distances when it comes to resident vs tourists, that's a solid possibility. they waited untill the money for the repair pooled from the fund, and then went for it
Same thoughts
2:21 The Tonk was just being restored... That's a relief.
👍
the Tonk need to be added to World of Tanks and War Thunder.
As targets for the tutorial? Maybe a crossover event in which cute cartoon characters drive the Tonk into battle?
@@longtsun8286 No as a main battle tank XD Make it broken XD
But I would be happy that it is like a Light tank or target.
@@Auriorium I wanna see it as a easter egg at war thunder
TBF in either game I could see it as like an april fool's game mode.
I've played the Tonk years ago in War Thunder as a custom mission, its possible you might still be able to find it with a google search!
Not a fan that they painted even the tank treads green, but I'm happy that someone's taking care of it.
In fairness I suspect it's to put an extra layer between the Tonk and the elements.
@@RedShocktrooperRST Yes, but it would have been better to paint them black.
@@jic1 Agreed
@@jic1 in Italy that would add 2 years before thatd been done.
Better to just slab on the paint they had.
And the Vision Blocks ;_; But otherwise it would have probably rusted
So glad to hear it’s being taken care of, good work on getting this out too.
Good on the Italians doing their best to keep this memorial as is, I have little doubt that Tonk is by now such a famous artefact that many tourists will visit the area to see it.
As funny as the tonk is, it’s really heartwarming to see the restoration of the tonk and the keep up of the memorial.
i just love how GOOGLE MAPS, added the tonk as an actual location!
wait, what? what do I have to put in the search bar?
edit: I found it. it's considered a shrine lmaooo
I think anyone can add locations.
@@TonedVirus3 In a sense it is. The Tonk is part of a war memorial after all.
there are a lot of weird places that are added as full location just because they are there, this, if nothing else, it's a full on memorial
It’s not that hard to add new sites to google maps. Everyone can do it actually.
there was a tank in Santa Rosa, NM that I slept in, during my summer of 2020 cross country motorcycle trip (on a budget of 38 cents and a crusty paperclip). was an M728 CEV. it used to be a monument at a veteran's hall that had been defunct for 20+ years by the time I came across it. it was surprisingly complete inside with gunsights and traverse mechanism all present and functional. had a blast rotating the turret and sighting in approaching trucks on the highway exit. it started raining before I could find a place to setup camp, so I just decided to close the hatch and sleep in the gunner's seat. not comfortable, but it worked.
well, as of 2023, it's gone. you can clearly see the tracks where it was towed away on google earth. I called both the hotel across the street (in plain view of the tank) and the auto wrecking yard behind it and I got the same answer from both places... "Huh? tank? we had a tank?" bro it was right in front of you. little peeved at that. called the local national guard garrison and got put on indefinite hold, after 2 hours I hung up. oh well, I guess it's gone.
here's the co-ordinates for it. 34.937243, -104.693687
That reminds me of an Illinois to California motorcycle ride I did in '90.
I needed coffee and a rest on I-80 in western Wyoming and I needed it before I hit Evanston, I was that tired and cramped up.
I found a small gas station/convenience store/diner, a little white cinderblock affair. I went in, got coffee, and the clerk asked if I needed food, she could grill me up something in a hurry. I declined, and sipped coffee spreading out in one of the booths. She came over and offered twice more. I declined twice more; I wasn't hungry, plus something just felt "off." I finished my coffee and rest break and got along on my way.
In '91 I hit the same route in my pickup. Pulled off I-80 again, but the building was gone. Only the foundation for the building and lot lights remained. Huh.
In '94 or '95 I was doing the same trip and a payphone rang when my son and I were in a rest area, taking a break because a lightning storm was playing about in our path. The call was a 911 callback that no one admitted to have made. Weird. Since I had the Wyoming State Troopers on the line I asked about the missing gas station, described it and named the exit. The 911 operator told me that the business had burned in the mid-70s.
No one believes me, but I seriously think I missed being taken to the fae realm.
And you, sir, are probably driving that tank in a different timeline. 😉
@@mbryson2899 I've had many an experience like that riding the roads of America. from beautiful little towns that simply aren't there to legit diners that I stopped and passed on because something was fishy, to roadside attractions that never existed.
I'm Irish, born in Belfast to a scottish father and a heavily superstitious irish mother. growing up my mother always taught me to be wary of the fae. that hasn't diminished now that we fly the stars and stripes.
@Fulccrum I see your reply in my notifications, but not in the replies here. I was able to copy/paste that link, Rosie in Santa Rosa California isn't the one I'm talking about. this is in Santa Rosa NM, a beautiful desert-esque mountain town of 'The Blue Hole" fame.
Propably removed it after people noticed that you moved the turret
@@aidanacebo9529 my bet is that the crew,or possibly a squadron, lived there. The M728 was used from the Vietnam War to the Yugoslavian wars,so do you remember the camo scheme of that tank?if it was like brown/tropical,it means that its last war was the Vietnam War,If its the desert one it means that it last served the Gulf War
I live in the southern tip of Italy and actually went there on september and yeah it wasn't there :(
my dad called the city and they told him that it was being "maintained" so yeah thank you for confirming!! I plan to go there again soon once I can confirm that it's there
TONK LIVES!!.
But in all seriousness I'm glad to hear that the Tonk hasn't been scrapped. All too often pieces of art like this just get scrapped or discarded without a second thought.
Have you (Cone of Arc) thought about reaching out to the town where the Tonk is and saying "Hey if you guys ever decide to throw this thing out could I have it?" Or "I know a guy in Italy who's interested in saving this thing from the scrap pile."
The Tonk is what brought me to Cone.... So glad to hear its still around and receiving love!!!
Same with me too.
Same for me =)
"ConeOfArc, your number one source for Tonk news, worldwide."
You know, I am glad they repaired the memorial. It's a small thing, but it deserves to be kept in good condition.
Yes, all memorials deserve to be kept in good condition, there is no sadder sight than a dishevelled soldier's memorial.
Think I need a mini Tonk, yard art. Long live the Tonk.
I learned about the tonk, was made aware of its disappearance shortly after and, finally, was told it was actually back and in better shape than before. What an emotional rollercoaster of a video!
Hell yea long live the Tonk!!! I’m also really happy that you gave a shoutout to those nice people in that store near by. That was really nice of you.
Awesome news! Many thanks to the shop owners!
A big shout out to Regina delle Feste for understanding that being nice is not only a good thing but it brings free advertising!😁😆👍
Wow, the restoration actually looks pretty good.
Now THIS is investigative journalism! Amazing reporting, thank you for doing your part 🫡
Tonk looks so happy with new paint🤗
Im so happy that it is being renovated. It will be here for years to come, serving as a memory of the good men lost and the memes
I'm going to Italy this year, you bet I'm going to see this thing in person
im going to cry this makes me so fuckin happy that they were just takin care of it
So glad to see Tonk is alright. Keep up the good work.
We now have a Tonk variant with a larger gun. We shall call it the Tonk 2.
Cool! The tonk video is what got me to watch your channel.
Legendary sleuthing work yo. Can't wait to see Tonk in it's updated glory. Mass respect to those who renovated it.
T.O.N.K !!!!!!
We are so happy TONK lives !!!!!
STOMP STOMP
I like how the only reason everyone is so concerned about the disappearance of a war memorial is that it became a meme.
Tonks very much for this vital update, Cone.
Tonk took a vacation and came back looking fresh
The tonk is recovered! Long love the tonk!
How
Everyone's asking where is Tonk, but not how is Tonk
I love this story arc! In the 1960s, the empire of ATGMs defeated the tank republic and enslaved them. As the hopes grew fainter, their savour, the TONK, was born. There, it fought against the ruthless rule of the missiles. Eventually finishing by assassinating TOW, the ATGM leader, Tonk led the tanks back to their glorious days by inventing the ERA and APS. Sadly, Lord Javelin, the new leader of ATGMs rose to power, and used his better knowledge of tanks to defeat them once more using tandem-HEAT charges. Javelin was no joke, he challenged Tonk to a duel and blew him into the stratosphere, effectively banishing him by throwing him far away. Luckily Tonk is smart and prepared plan B; He found his way into the IFV and APC nations, who were also oppressed by ATGMs, and allied them all. There, the vehicles upgraded Tonk into Tonk Prime MK2 and returned to fight the final war against ATGMs. On their first arrival, a bunch of missiles lunged at them, but Tonk jumped into the air and parried all of them back to their launcher! A wave of heat hailed the return of the saviour Tonk. Tonk returned to duel Javelin, and defeated the villainous antagonist dictator for once and for all. With the ATGMs banished, all the vehicles reunited and lived happy ever after.
edit: typos
That's good to hear!
Good job bro
I can't help but be slightly irritated at the guy who did the restoration work for painting the rubber tread of the Tonk, but I am definitely happy it's not lost!
Everyone: "I thought you were dead?"
Tonk: "my death was....greatly exaggerated"
Oh thank god
I'm glad this isn't just a forgotten monument left on a street corner. Can't wait to see it back in google maps in its full glory
That's great! Glad to see the Tonk just needed some restoration done
Thank the Gods for that, a world without the Tonk would be a less worthwhile place; The Tonk is special and the goofy little fellah has fans all over the world. Many thanks to the shop owners for their assistance in clearing up the mystery.
Good to see that this unique memorial still exists.
I was really worried about this news.
In Japan and Korea where there are many self-proclaimed "railway fan", 'railway artifacts with historical value' are basically always under the threat of theft. Railway per se can attract a certain group of 'mentally disabled' people because of its punctuality, and the fact that there is a huge second-hand goods market in which you can make quite some money by reselling 'limited goods' does not help either.
I like that they want to restore the tonk but Maan the poor tonk just got painted over with a can of green paint.
Somewhat sad but happy to see it still exists.
This brings me genuine joy
Lets go!!! Im so happy that the tonk is still a thing! :)
Bravissimo!
The Tonk is the only AFV that could rival the Mighty Bob Semple Tank.
It's obvious they'd team up to fight evil.
Thats the most wholesome thing this month
The legend will continue
thank you to the dear local people who helped in the restoration and upkeep,👍
It’s funny seeing you trying to reach out to the town hall, because all italians know that you can’t send a mail to a town hall expecting a response, many times they ignore you even if you go there in person, it’s just how it works here in Italy
They often respond... after you send 5+ more mails solliciting them
Now we know what is the Tonk, where is the Tonk, when was the Tonk and finally, how is the Tonk.
Such a relief
In Sweden most municipalities are really helpful and will answer almost any questions. I ask one municipality if a certain rare (rare to Sweden) snail species had survived the winter, they found someone that might know and put me in touch with them.
Looking at the image at 0:25, I suspect that an unlucky motorist ran into it, causing the need for the restoration. I hate to think what had happened to the road vehicle, given the mass of the cupola.
I'm gonna be honest I never knew it disappeared. How nice they are repairing the little guy.
Tonk memorial... a crusader turret on a mk3 Panzer hull. Bot Folded early 43... makes sense their memoral is both sides of the war.
I think the tonk require some track tension adjustment.
Good. So glad to see its ok. I want to make a pilgrimage one day
*Whew*....Had me worried there.
I'm glad they gave it some much needed TLC.
Just did the Google maps thing, looks like a truck or something else big had gone past, clipped the tonk and knocked it into the war memorial, damaging it. Many of the Maps shots show critical damage to the white arch with the cross in it.
Glad the tonk is back.
Yaaaay, Tonk is back!
I was scared for a minute... I thought the Tonk was gone!
TONK you very much for this video!
Guys, this is not the only Tonk in existence. At the AAF tank museum in Virginia theses one just in front of the building. Also, this museum has many unique item and if definitely worth the trip. Pretty sure the owner has a thing for uniforms and as a result that part of the museum is something else.
What's this new up armed Tonk variant called? Tonk-85? Jagdtonk? TonkA1?
Tonk took a soul sabbatical, had a nice spa day, saw a chiropractor, and went home.
Let's go!
All that panic when they were just restoring it! lol but yeah i was also panicked when i saw the video
Glad they were just touching up the Tonk, it was looking pretty rough.
i love how the tonk turned into a major thing
Oh am so happy it was restored. ALL HAIL THE TONK! LONG LIVE THE TONK!
Good to know the rolley boi is back safe.
What a legend
TONK NEVER DIE
Now you have my attention
I was so scared when I read the title.
Oh noooo ! ☹️
Phew ! WHOOHOO 👍
Can we have the Italian TD line from World of Tanks covered one of these days…
I am planning to visit Italy in the near future. I Might aswell take a picture of me and the Tonk
history continues...big shout out to homeboys in regina delle feste serving the cause!
Edited: while being respectful, about it being a memorial....I can also see someone making plushies of it. It would translate quite perfectly.
In the future, Tonks will conquer the motorcycle industry
That gave me a heart attack. My american soul has been restored
"this will sound weird, buuuut...I run a tank channel and we're worried about Tonk."
It's nice to get good news for once.
This is great news.
I was trying to explain the tonk to my nephew, he's 7. He wants to see it now
glad to have learned the tonk is both now offically marked on google map but also was given some resotation as due need for the men it stands as a momument too, Italy may have made some idiotic decesions in the past and many lives got lost as a whole, but honor of the lost and keeping them in condition to do is is a vary fine indevor they seam to have made hard work to do.
Are you going to be at the American heritage museum this month for the tank demonstration I’ll be there as a reenacter
Possibly I'm not sure yet
@@ConeOfArc if you go I’d love to say hi my name is John I’m a volunteer and ww2 tanker reenactor for the AHM 🙂
Ayo! the tonk again!
We need to get Come to visit the Tonk
