    This was a revelation for me Painting is all about seeing and duplicating values for me and this was perfect. I joined the mastery program and I have to say it is amazing how quickly I was able to get up and painting some pretty fine pieces. I have been happily surprised by every session. This program will unleash so many great artists on the world.

    In reference to a caller who brought up the french technique " Grisaille," it is pronounced Griz-eye or Gris-eye not Griz-ell. Similar to Versailles Palace. The "ll's are silent. Grisaille is an underpainting technique using tones of grey, aka "gris" not green as Elli stated. The values of grey was to resemble that seen in sculpture and relief.

      I did not know that the double “L” was similar to the Spanish “Y”sound as it’s pronounced, but it makes sense. Oh, how I love the simplicity of French terminology with “grisaille”meaning “the greyness”, just as with coloring hair “balayage” literally means “to sweep”.

    I just started the mastery program and it is absolutely wonderful! I love it with every molecule. The level of professionalism and the infinite knowledge, love and dedication for life and art that this family has - it is revolutionary and inspiring in all levels. Watching this video gives me even more perspective on subtractive painting, it ties so well with the more in depth lessons. My art has already evolved so much in 3 short weeks!

    Maybe one day I’ll be able to take this course. I pulled my oils out after well over a decade about four months ago and have worked on about forty paintings (mostly smaller). I was mostly a drawler before I got my hands on oil in my early twenties, but I have luckily been a haircolorist for the last 19 years and so I thoroughly understand the color wheel at this point (‘‘twas a headache at first with pesky natural remaining pigments).
    I still think oil painters are the rare birds within the art world, but I’ve recently realized there are so many more than I thought and I quickly came across your videos. “I’m a recovering slow painter” and talent is overrated” really hit home from the first video of yours that I watched. Although understanding your point, I disagree with the Elli’s statement that she is not a talented argument, which is an egregious lie. You inspired me to use some acrylic again, even though I still don’t like working with it. It’s soooooo frustrating.
    Anyway, that entire word salad of a preamble is really to say thank you for helping to inspire me again. It’s been a long road with dealing with alcoholism, the base drop of anxiety which follows quitting, self doubt, lack of creativity and confidence, even in my work as a hairstylist when I should have been at a point of confidence. I’m absorbing all of the information I can do that maybe I can actually sell my art for the first time in thirty seven years, if I can figure out pricing and not undervaluing it worth. I’ve shown multiple people the work on your website to say I find it inspiring and that I’m trying to get more in touch with abstraction or what I call a celebration of color. Again, thank you. I’m more than sure you’ve heard this, but you really may not know how much what you are doing by sharing information means to many. I thought being an artist was a pipe dream, even though drawling and singing were probably my first passions, if I could even remember when I started. I’m not sure if I can take your course, but I’ll definitely save up to invest in your oils to supplement my current collection. Thank you for the amazing positive vibes and keep doing what you do.

    I really feel drawn to enroll in the program, but I am currently in a different program. I'm doing a lot of "paper towel painting", just under paintings with value, for now. I wanted to paint landscapes but was awfully confused about value. As I practice, that confusion is diminishing. Thank you for this! Yes it is completely mesmerizing to watch the lovely Dimitra painting. I'm trying a blue heron with transparent black now.

I have signed up for it and I guess I’m on the waiting list but I’m wondering can I extend my time and start with you another time I’m in the process of finishing a book and it has. I would like it to be finished or nearly finished. I’m at 70,000 words so I’m almost done and I would like to go back to painting. But I think would be biting off more than I can handle to jump in this class right now, until I get the book published

    When I was in art school in America, I'm American living in Scotland, I was painting a nude model and suddenly I was in this zone where the whole class fell away. I felt free and right. When I came out of that, the entire class was around me looking at my work. I was astonished at what I had painted, and a second later, the professor came over and said no no no! Then she ripped my brush from my hand and started painting over my work. The teacher told me that is not the way to paint. I felt my face fall, and I heard gasps amonst the other students. The light and freedom I felt faded. I never painting with oils again. I regret that I allowed that 'professor' to affect me so badly.

      She misused her authority. This could be an important life lesson for you. I believe you were channeling from the unseen--your "higher self," if you will. I just want to encourage you to dip back into that style of painting, agaimĵ. It sounds like you need to go for it.

    • @suzannebonham583
      @suzannebonham583 11 місяців тому +3

      Oof, I am soooo sorry that happened to you. That was truly a traumatic experience. I hope that somehow you can find that zone again and perhaps let the past go when you're ready. The world needs to see the type of paintings that you were making then.

    • @anjilala
      @anjilala 10 місяців тому +3

      Maybe it was a reaction to your freedom. You no longer needed the professor or even the school in that moment because you were channeling your inner being. I hope you will try again. I didn't paint for a long time after my art school experience. Because Art was a source and expression of joy and that joy was taken and replaced with ideas about what art should or shouldn't be. Guidance on technique and different approaches can be helpful, but a dramatic response like that is coming from Ego and the professor felt threatened. I hope you will have the courage to trust yourself again. You have a gift ❤

      Oh, Gehenna no. That is destruction of personal property as far as anyone is concerned and a major lack of boundaries on their part. If you still haven’t picked up oils again, please do. I know emotional trauma can be paralyzing, but it’s worth working through if you had that amazing experience before it was shattered. We’re all so done with narcissists like that mess of a human. Sometimes Type A personalities have way more freedom than they should.

    You are so flexible with those payments which is fantastic! I’m a complete self taught painter. I would love to learn from your family but because I can no longer go to work because of my medical condition and I’m paid by the health insurance fund. So I am not allowed to earn anything extra because of it. That also means that I’m not allowed to sell my art which is very sad. I cannot afford it with my minimum income. But….every time I watch this, the part at the beginning where Dimitra is explaining the mixture she made of linseed oil and ???, the video glitches and I can’t view or hear what she’s saying about the mediums she’s using. It’s just for those few split seconds right at the explanation time lol. Was that on purpose or is there a way you can tell us what she says at those moments? 🤔.
    I only ask because I struggle knowing what mediums vs linseed oil vs solvents vs turpentine vs paint thinner etc etc to use or not use or how to properly use them. Lol.

    I hope this is received well but I'm a fairly new artist trying to figure out my technique so I watch a ton of videos on UA-cam made by many people just to get a broad range. I have tried several times to watch your videos many times as they seem to be very helpful. My problem is that I am not able to get through them due to the heavy tension between the two artists whom I assume are mentor and protege. To elaborate, it seems that the mentor is somehow threatened by the abilities of the protege. Perhaps I'm wrong but it is quite anxiety-inducing so I figured I would mention this in comments as constructive criticism. I hope this is received well. Thanks and take care
