    If you want to try another weird looking heirloom tomato try the 'reisetomate'. For the taste though I recommend you the white currant tomato. That tastes like tropical fruit and people either love it or hate it, due to what an unusual taste it has for a tomato

      If you can manage to grow your own tomatoes (though I'm not sure how easy that would be), they're worlds better than the ones you get from the supermarket. Those are generally picked while they're unripe, shipped and then "ripened" artificially so they look more appealing, but they don't develop any particular flavor.

    My mother unintentionally grew these this past summer. It was very windy and dry in the spring and many of her tomatoes grown from seed didn't make it (the community garden is located at the top of the highest hill in the city with no shelter from the elements and the pandemic limited how often people were allowed to visit their gardens so she couldn't water as often as she wished). The last seedlings at the greenhouse were labelled as romas, but turned out to be these guys. I didn't know they were called peach tomatoes! They were alright. Maybe not our favourite tomatoes, but still good. I did find them to be slightly on the sweet end of the tomato spectrum compared to grocery store tomatoes, but also definitely very savoury.

    There are several varieties like this now. I grow one called Wapsipinicon Peach which is usually sweet and fruity, but it can vary from bush to bush. The thing about heirlooms is that they are usually open pollinated, so if the grower has multiple varieties that are not seperated, the offspring may be mixed and not true to type. In this case, the original may have been sweet and fruity but after seedsaving and replanting the mixed offspring is not. Of course that's also the beauty of heirlooms because there's always the chance for a superior or unique offspring to occur.

    • @jeremybyington
      @jeremybyington 3 роки тому +1

      I tried the Wapsipinicon last year and it had a bitter aftertaste that was a big NOPE from me. I’m currently trying to make a cherry tomato-sized version of this yellow Garden Peach variety by selecting the smallest ones I find from each generation.

    • @jeremybyington
      @jeremybyington 3 роки тому +2

      They have a low-acid tomato flavor and make for an interesting salsa. They are indeterminate and very vigorous if you grow them in the ground. I had about 20 of them growing in 2019 and got about 300 tomatoes from them. I recommend buying the orange and red varieties as well because they are just as vigorous but are more acidic and traditional tasting.
      The low acid varieties are not as versatile so when you end up with 300 of them you are stuck with eating them fresh or canning them in salsa. I made several pasta dishes and each time I was just thinking how much better the sauce would be if it were made with red tomatoes. 🤷‍♂️

    I grew a variety of these in 2017, some friends I got horse manure from gave me a few plant starts. The specific variety they were growing was called Wapsipinocon, named after a river in Iowa. Very tasty tomato! I feel like the sweetness of the particular cultivar I grew was much higher than you describe, no onion-ey flavor either. Mine tasted much closer to a cherry tomato or even almost as sweet as a sungold cherry tomato.

  • @jeremybyington

    I grow a few varieties of these. The yellow Garden Peach tomato you have there is a pretty typical size and that variety does not get much larger than that. One thing I would like to point out is that they are indeterminate and very vigorous and you will get dozens off of a single plant. I have an orange variety that tastes a bit more like the traditional tomato and I particularly like these fuzzy tomatoes because of how meaty they are. I’ve grown other very vigorous varieties that are mostly water and bland but these pack a lot of flavor.

  • @DeRien8
    @DeRien8 3 роки тому

    All tomatoes have some amount of small hairs covering them. Usually though they are so sparse, tiny, and fragile that unless you are picking it off the vine yourself with the right lighting, they will be rubbed off before you notice them. Guess whoever bred this tomato was able to select for denser fuzz or found a wacky mutant. This is why I love gardening with plants that are easily crossed or variable, like solanums, squash, and citrus.

    I believe I actually have seeds for this variety, i think heirloom tomatoes are super fun the strong flavor in that variety might even just be from growing conditions if you grow tomatoes in hot dry conditions or they just haven’t been watered recently the fruit will have a super strong version of whatever the typical flavor is for that variety.

    a red/pinkish variety of these is grown in rather cold climate, it is immune to the flower rot. a problem visible on the bottom of the tomato turning brown and rotting. somehow the "fur" present on these tomato varieties stops the bacteria/fungi which causes the bud area of the tomato to rot.

    Could have some *Solanum cheesmaniae* genes in it. That species has fuzz and has been hybridized into some domestic tomato lines for increased disease resistance. It's easy to imagine a later cross getting both "hairy" alleles while being an otherwise normal tomato. I actually have found a volunteer cherry tomato with a bit of fuzz on it, but never kept any seeds because it had some unwanted traits too, like thick skin and below average flavor.

    The 'other day' you went to the farmers market and I notice the trees have their leaves still. Gotcha!

    My aunt grew tomatoes that seemed normal until you touched them and they were fuzzy, tasted like regular ones though

      Spoonfuls really? 😲 I find it so acidic. I like to really cook it out when I use it to temper the acidity, but I love the body and complexities it adds. It grounds things.

    I grow these, and I'm trying to breed the fuzzy skin gene into different colors and shapes. The tactile pleasure of the velvet skin makes it taste better

    Question: which fruit and veg from supermarkets are actually relatively good?

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  3 роки тому

      hmm... good question... It depends what's in season. When a fruit shows up at the market when it's not in season it should be viewed with suspicion

    Should be called apricot tomatoes because of the size and color

    What exactly causes the outside skin of a fruit to have fuzz/fur on it like a peach? Obviously they don't have pores so
