One trick I heard for nailing focus on yourself with a manual lens is to have the camera with you where you wanna stand and focus on the center column of the tripod and put the camera back on it without moving the focus ring and hope you can stand right back where you were, maybe leaving a marker where you were standing so you know
Hey, Jabrone, it was cool meeting you last week and I must say that I highly anticipated this video and you did not disappoint. Throwing in details like, "I focused on this turtle," and "the sumac is sour and tastes like loneliness" always put a smile on my face. Keep up the great work!
A tip for removing the adapter - remove the lens and adapter as one, then remove the lens from the adapter if you need to instead of trying to prise the ring from the camera. I have multiple adapters and keep them on the lens unless I need to actually use them on an M42 film camera.
@ Just the nature of the beast. PRAKTICA SHALL RISE AGAIN, AND ALL SHALL BOW TO M42, AS THE LITTLE AUTOMATIC APERTURE PIN THINGY ON THE BACK MAKES ITS TRIUMPHANT AND INEVITABLE RETURN.
2nd last shot was amazing despite focus. Tilt-shift-esque. It'd be a hilarious/tedious challenge to film yourself as a tiny man on a proper tilt-shift do it!
Focus distance is an arc, not a line. If you focus on a tree off to the left you will need to stand a bit behind that tree in the center to be in focus (this is super hard to explain with word). Imagine a dot that is the camera sensor, and then a circle around that dot with the radius being the focus distance; if the tree is off to the left of center from where the camera is pointing you will need to stand along the arc to its right to remain in focus.
Love the addition of the V.O. That should become a thing for future videos, no question. The lens looks great but that's some heavy CA in the tree branches
The Voigtländer 58 mm f/1.4 for the Nikon F-mount had a screw-on hood and a dedicated hood cap that had the cylindrical part inside lined with a a sort of velvety fabric. It was pretty steep in terms of price, and only a retailer in Austria had it at the time (I live in Poland).
Thanks for the review! Definitely buying this now I've seen what it does in video. I already had my eye on this lens but didn't know if it would fit on an EF speedbooster with an adapter, so thanks for confirming that it does. The focus throw is too long for focus pulls in hand but it'll be perfect for a follow focus when you put a gear ring on it. A lot of cine lenses have the same 270 degree throw. Don't expect an autofocus version of this lens though, the focus group weighs a ton in this thing. If you really like this look, why not get a DJI LiDAR?
It's an amazing photo lens, it takes ages to turn the focus ring, but it allows for a very precise setting, even if you're blind like me and just cannot use different manual focus lenses at all. If you have a clear subject to focus on of course, though those branches in focus were crisp
Wow, that lens is VERY, very nice. Side note that M42 adapter is easy to remove if you remove it on the lens. Just unmount the lens with the adapter attached as if it was an EF lens by pressing the release and twisting of off. There really are some increadible M42 lenses, I have to agree with your preference for auto focus for sure but I do enjoy using some of this glass, that TT artisans lens is on my list for sure of lenses to try sometime.
Thanks for the comparison . I just ditched all of my Fuji gear for a canon r6 mkii. And really appreciate you bringing out the canny boy for some comparison . Please more canny boy.
Take the lenses out again on a sunny day and that railroad comparison would be very different. Also a big added value with the TTartisan is you can use it on a GFX/H2D
If you leave that lens stopped down to where you have a useable depth of field, it looks GREAT! With Sony you can use the Monitor and Control (?) app to see on your phone if you are in focus. I can't remember if Canon's app has useable peaking or not to help you out with confirming focus on your phone when you're shooting on the C70...
@@KNURKonesur Bro, you probably have never experiences the Soviet occupation and with which "benefits" it comes. Helios 44-2 was one of them because this was the only thing they were able steal from the German when they forcefully deported the lens masters to the USSR. This was an awful lens full on aberration which was vividly present in every Soviet movie.
@lennutrajektoor they stole dozens of designs for different Helios, Jupiter, Zenit, Zenitar, Mir, Arsat, Kaleinar lenses and Zenit, Kiev, Fed, Zorki cameras, and many many other things :D
Great test. So many nice and cheap new lenses are coming out. But as shown here, it can be so hard to manual focus. Autofocus is where the big advances are taking place. For example the new Sirui Aurora 85mm f1.4 appears to latch and stay on like a G Master. For only $500! Best quotes: "Leading lines... to hell." "TT Artisans... go buy a Zeiss lens, take it apart, come back to work when you're ready to make it." "Red flowers... people make tea out of that. Good times I bet. Sour and lonely tasting." "I'm not going to sell it immediately... [runs out of frame to sell it]." I didn't laugh all day until this video. Several times.
You can try a matte screen protector to beat reflections. The TTartisan lens looks quite nice, but to be fair you could get a very similar look with a much cheaper Helios/Mir/other Zeiss knockoffs of the yesteryear:)
Dude! Another video, cripple hammer to me doing anything because I’m watching you. Keep em coming. I’ve been using the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 what’s your thoughts?
12:04 In Canada, not only is your flag red, but your weed’s blazing red too! That’s gotta be some 70% THC straight-from-hell strain-fire for real. Now I’m curious how that would flex on our 90mm macro lens🔥🍁📸
I was actually getting ready to buy the TTArtisans, then was offered a used Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 in a somewhat similar price range. Easiest choice of my life 😆
It looks good to me. The Toneh Ballz are lemon-shaped, however. What do the aperture blades look like? Wow when you shift to the scene up close that is darker that Toneh swirls like water down a toilet.
That m42 adapter turned my Sigma SD Quattro into a useless brick. Yes, Asahi glass is fantastic, but I haven't been able to get the adapter off, many scratches from all sorts of plyers to show for. 4 sigma-only lenses have been collecting dust, as the buyers market for those is smaller than my left ***
Nice lens for still life, talking heads video where nobody moves and nothing else that I can think of. But hey, the price is right. I have some old manual focus lenses and a few video designed manual focus lenses, but I use them less often than autofocus lenses. On the other hand, a change of pace that requires concentration is OK. Most astrophotography lenses are either really wide or really telephoto. 75mm might work for andromeda, though because it takes up a good hunk of sky but does not span the whole thing. But given the swirly bokeh, the edges of the image will be distorted. So I think for making astro images it is really just a "for a lark" option because the images will be strange.
I scored a Dell P2721Q and put it on my vivo book, intel let me put it 12bit Full RGB 4K, its OLED at 5ms, but you'd swear its 25ms, youtube compression sucks unless you buy 4k60 or 4k50, no sense wasting money I guess. lol. Got an angle bracket for my brothers surface book 4 (upgrade 4TB) SSD and the keyboard does not work when you load windows, its actually a camy from pakistan!? It still lights up, used the power button, holly goats.
Kasey, please get a large crank handle measuring tape. Just place it under under the tripod where the camera is and pull the tape out to where you want to be standing. Check the distance indicated on tape measure and then set the distance on the lens. The taste of victory is sweet.
With you trying all these fun manual lenses, maybe investing in the DJI Lidar focus thing could be a good idea. It will basically turn them into autofocus lenses
Brother, just get the cheapest on camera monitor (since you like pain, might as well grab a regular 22 inch monitor with you) and a 25ft hdmi cable - problemo solvado senior 😂
Hi, as always, your video creations and analysis are interesting and fun. Yes, the truth is that using manual lenses to film yourself can be cumbersome. As I always see you in a hurry to calculate distances between train tracks and tree branches, although the solution can be a bit more sophisticated, have you considered using a monitor with an affordable HDMI wifi transmitter/receiver? Or use a dummy like @MarkusPix sometimes does ua-cam.com/video/ZExM_L-9sBg/v-deo.html 😅📷📽
