Everybody always says the pain is typically something else and not the tear in patients over 35 but can't identify where the pain is coming from but yet there's still a tear there and that is not the source of the pain. Then what is.

Labral tears are sooooooo common ... very few cause pain, therefore very few need surgery. What is a labral tear? What are your options? Let the learning begin!

I'm 64 years old and a gym fanatic. I had a dislocation of left shoulder in an accident in 1971 - but didn't visit any doctor since I had to leave that night for a trip - hence somehow managed to put the shoulder back in it's place- though it did trouble me sometimes when playing cricket. 2 years back, I started getting pain - specially when doing overhead lifting- but would continue after applying pain relieving spray. I went in for an MRI - revealed that the labrum was in pieces & Osteo-arthritis had set in since the out-of- place shoulder joint was grating against the socket - and the Ortho just plain told me that he needed to do a shoulder replacement. But after discussing the pros & cons, I thought it best to delay the procedure. I consulted 3 other Specialists who , after looking at the MRI scans, recommended the same. The last Ortho told me that although it was in a bad shape, he would treat the patient instead of the disease. Meanwhile, I had stopped doing exercises & even visited a Physio , who showed me some exercises - but the pain was growing each day & this affected me mentally. After visiting the last Ortho, I decided that my body was different - and went back to the Gym . It's almost a year now - yes - the pain is there 24*7 - I do not lift like before , and though there are some positions which I can't access - like reaching the spine, I'm feeling mentally & physically much better than when I had stopped going to the Gym or cycling on the road. Everytime I do certain exercises like 'Bench-press', I remember the doctor who told me that I will one day go straight from the bench press table to the operation table. It is articles like yours that keep people like me going though I know that I must respect age and physical injuries and slow down.

Hi Dr. Luks, Hi got hit by a van while cycling. The Drs. suspect a slight postero-inferior tear (MRI with dye). I also had a bit of an AC strain. I had, and still have a bit of a biceps tendon tension, probably as I also fractured the radius where my elbow was at a 90 degree angle for almost three months. I do 1 hour of physio a day. The pain is getting much better. The shoulder still feels a bit week. I will start strengthening it at the gym as the rubber band and light weight have become too easy. The problem is with the shoulder rotation with arm extended laterally on the horizontal plane and elbow flexed at 90 degrees. There is still clicking and a some sort of grunging in some angles. It is getting better but very slowly. The physios and doctors say it will keep on getting better as the shoulder is still a bit too far forward. I am worried as I used to play golf, cross-country skiing, cycling, water sports, guitar, etc... It has been 7 months and I would have liked to have surgery but they say that my shoulder might be worse off if they do surgery. I am worried about making it worse with repetitive movements such as golf, swimming, nordice skiing, etc... I am only 29. How much longer should I wait to see if it gets better. I somehow feel like a little piece of labrum might be loose, that causes this clicking which might be just be possible to shave off or reattach with arthroscopy. I feel this as I do not feel any pain at the back of the shoulder at all. It is a long post, and you have not been here in 3 years. Thank you.

I had a shoulder dislocation I got from big wave surfing a year and a half ago, when it happened ,my arm hyper extended backwards and I felt a big crunching rip in my arm pit while in the turmoil .My arm never had to be reset,it reset on its own, before I got back to the surface. My doctor said that my MRI showed no tears, but I think he over looked my tendon that hangs down, out of place in my arm pit. This tendon now tightens up and fills like it wants to snap if I do push ups or pull ups.So don't go there. Is there an operation I can get to repair this;it seams to be the tendon that connects the bicep to the pectoral, maybe (bicep tendon). Please let me know

Hi Dr. Thank you for all your videos. I am 47 and have been boxing for about 3 years, mostly for fun, but had few sparring sessions. Recently I was diagnosed with the SLAP tear in my shoulder. MRI didn't show the tear, so I am trying to stay optimistic. I am going thru PT and trying to avoid the surgery. Do you think I will be able to get back to boxing? Do you have any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

Hey Dr. I've been diagnosed with a slap tear I'm 20 and still wanting to train but have been told I need surgery. Is there any particular exercises I can do to help prevent having to get surgery or at least help strengthen my should so I can still do some light weight training before I get surgery
