      You never heard my father. Striding with both left and right hands. Do I know player piano rolls often add additional notes and sustain notes otherwise not sustainable? Sure. Either way, the Sandman piece is what it is. I think a huge part is the playing of melody with full chords. Great.

      The extra notes are often added to make the arrangement more exciting, but the roll's music certainly isn't playable by one human in that case. They do have "4 hand arrangements" that represent two pianists playing at once. Remember, the standard rolls played here were arranged and not necessarily recorded. Reproducing rolls (which I don't yet feature on my channel) were made with a recording piano that actually recorded a pianist's performance in real time (Rachmaninoff is one such famous example). But even with those rolls the arrangers went in after recording and made adjustments/modifications.

    May I ask why the motor in your piano has green bellows/ air pumps? Was that standard for Behr Bros Pianos, or just a touch you added? Thanks.

    • @merimar3
      @merimar3  5 років тому +6

      The green cloth is just an artifact of the professional rebuilder who worked on my air motor and tracking mechanism. All other work on the player/piano was done by me, but the air motor/tracking mechanism I couldn't quite get right, so I sent it out. I'm glad he recovered them with green cloth - it's my favorite color! From what I understand many original players would have had black, green, or a red/magenta cloth as the standard.
