Another excellent video. Love your work. Just a question about this. What did it cost you to build it and are you going to sell plans on how to construct it? I couldn't get over how quiet it was and efficient at removing waste. Many thanks. Chris.
Hi Chris and thank you, I will do plans once I know everything is ok with it. I haven't worked out the cost as yet but the thing is with this filter, there are a lot of parts where you can save money. Thanks, Terry.
Hi Chris, The RDF is on my pond as we speak, and has been running for just a week. I have to say it's going better than I ever imagined. I did have a bit of a disaster for a start. I moved my Pro system on to my patio and set it running so I could run it while I re-plumbed the shed for the rdf. I got the moving bed installed and then the rdf which took about a week. I think I must have got a bit excited about turning the rdf on lol. When I was ready for the big turn on, I just turned off the pump to the Pro system, went in the shed and turned on the rdf. I must have stood watching the rdf for about 30 minutes. All was fine. Went to look at the pond and I couldn't see my fish. I've never seen my pond so dirty, and for a few seconds I couldn't work out what the hell had happened. Then it dawned on me. I just switched the Pro filter off, not thinking that I had no one way valve on the Pro filter, so it emptied all the dirt it had caught in just over a week back in to my pond. It took about 5 days and my pond is back to normal again. So I really put the rdf through its paces lol. I was a bit apprehensive as to whether it would be as good as the Pro system as that does take some beating. But as of this moment, it is defernatly on a level with the Pro system in performance. The bonus is, the dirt it catches is removed straight away whereas with the Pro and other filters, it sits in the filter for a week still polluting the water. Also I have no filters or media to clean now. There are a couple of things I want to change but there only minor things. I have to say I'm well impressed. Terry.
I think it's outstanding the way you've made it from scratch. Your right about the drum removing the waste straight away. Are you going to run the drum leading into a moving bed? Or run it from drum into your pro system to increase filtration? Look forward to your next video buddy. 😀
Hi Jack, and thank you for your kind comments. This is quite an old video. I now have a new version of the RDF made using polypropylene for the case. You can see it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html thanks again, Terry.
Hi Terry, cant wait for your rdf plans and more videos, checking 2-3 times a day, to see if anything has changed. Last year made the pro and is best filter I have ever used, for years I have not had clear water, I am planning a rdf to go with the pro system which will be above the pro system and to have 2x fluid ki chambers. for extra filtration. All I can say is brilliant, Regards Chris.
Hi Chris and thank you, very much appreciated. I will try to put a small video together as everybody is waiting for one. The thing is, as always I want this filter the best it can be before I release the plans. The mechanics of the rdf are spot on and ready to go. I just want to try an even finer mesh than I'm using now to be sure we've got the best. Trouble is its £75.00 a go lol. Anyway I have ordered finer mesh so as soon as I've given that a go I will release the plans. Thanks again, Terry.
Absolutely brilliant mate, thank you for sharing. I look forward to buying the plans and finally getting clear water ha. Looking forward to your next video
Hi Terry, Awesome build! Very impressive :) I installed an AEM drum filter for a friend and RDF'S are amazing, one thing that seems to help (you might find this useful) is if you put an airstone in the first section where the inlet is, it stops rubbish settling in it and ensures it goes into the drum. This is very well timed, I'm planning on rebuilding my grow-on soon and would love a drum, but can't afford one. I presume it would be easy to make it gravity fed, just get a float switch which works the other way in the clean side and have 110mm inlet/outlets Hope it all goes well!
Hi RORY01014, That's a good idea. I was messing about yesterday trying to put a T on the inflow to stop the dirt from settling. I haven't tried it as a gravity fed filter, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Thanks mate, Terry
I hope it helps! I imagine gravity fed the water would be set so that it is just under the guttering, and the float switch would trigger if the water level drops on the clean side of the drum. Maybe I will be the Guinea pig for it! :) Looking forward to seeing the plans and a rough build cost, hopefully I can then downsize it slightly and give it a go!
Hi mate, I would just have the water level in the filter equal to the water level of the pond and pump from the clean water side. I would have a check valve in the pipe to the filter so you were able to turn the water off if needed. Terry.
Sorry that's what I meant, (the drum's height would be set so the water level (pond level) is under the gutter and you would have the normal slide or ball valve on the inlet and it then feeding a bio chamber of some description and have the pump after that :) Basically it would be a combi drum. The possibilities are endless! Very excited to get started now Thanks Rory
As always impressive job. If this is better than your other filters count me in for one of the plan sets. Looking forward to your follow-ups it was great to watch the first test.
Hi, and thank you. I do have a newer version of the DIY RDF you'll see in my newer videos and can find on my website diypondfilters.com hope this helps, Terry.
Hi Simon, This does take a lot more making. You will love the Midi system. I still love my Pro system and if this doesn't give me the water quality I'm use to the Pro will be back. Thanks, Terry. PS. The Midi system will always sell if you decided to.
Thats an amazing first test Wrighty. You are a genius. Hope it continues to settle into its run well.....how quick does it clean itself too! One negative comment from the wife about video.....NO HAPPY PONDING signoff 🤔
Hi Mate, would you give your wife my most humble apology. I did the video at 1am this morning so I was a bit tired. thanks for your kind comments. I have the float trigger set pretty low at the moment for testing, but if I lift it slightly and stop stirring my pond up lol, I would think it will go around 3+ hours between cleans. I have it set for the drum to do two revolutions which is 15 seconds. thanks mate, Terry.
I wonder if you could eliminate the need for the belt driven system by utilizing a water jet, powered by the water pump, to turn a paddle wheel of some sort that would be attached to both sides of the drum - perhaps by adding two more water jets to each end of the cleaning jet system? Nice work! Really enjoy your videos!
Hi Shane, Thank you for your nice comments and input. That's good thinking. I have thought about it, but I don't think you would generate enough power from the jets to move the drum. When the drum is half submerged in water it does take quite a bit of turning. Plus as it turns it has to lift the wet dirt out of the water and round to the top. That's one of the reasons I went for a wiper motor, as they've got quite a lot of torque for a small motor. Thanks again for the input. If you think of anything else give me a shout. I love to listen to ideas. Terry.
Hi Wrigty, this drum filter work is really nice . I liked the craftsman ship and finishing of your drum filter great job. I just wondered what is the micron size of mesh you used. What is the material outerbody is made up off.
Hi, and thank you. The case is made from 18mm ply, and the mesh was 70 micron. I have a new one since then, I'm in the process of working on at the moment: ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html Terry.
thanks for quick reply Terry, I am planning to fit the rdf above the existing pro, I need length, width and height, inc all fitting excluding stand. Thanking You.Regards Chris
Hi mate, I actually built a Mk2 RDF which was made out of 6mm Polly Propylene. Have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/QzQvSzczJrw/v-deo.htmlsi=Vsn-y7Fa35C91pGr There are many other videos showing the RDF on my channel. I just used a Triggered Timer Delay switch for the drum cleaning control. Hope this helps. Terry.
Nice design and build, Terry. Should be a nice addition to your other filtering systems. Going to put the plans up on your site? By the way, I hope that was not your wife's favorite pitcher you used there.
Hi Harry and thank you. Yes I will put the plans on my website in time, once I know it's ok. I hope it's not her best jug or I'm in big trouble lol, Thanks, Terry.
Hi Alan, thank you, very much appreciated. I must confess I'm no carpenter or painter lol. I just scrape by, ask the wife lol. I think you'd be looking at £3000.00+ for one this size retail, so I have saved a few shillings. Thanks, Terry.
Hi Terry, great video as usual! i think the next big thing with RDF's is the inclusion of an amalgam uv-c to stop the build up of bio film on the screen. Also intrigued to know why you don't use rubber fittings? a.t.b nigel and chrissy
Hi Nigel, Thank you. During the build of all these filters I bought a job lot of fittings which I'm trying to use up. Most of the 50mm have been used now but I still have quite a few 40mm left. I am at this moment looking at UV's for the rdf but the price is a bit scary as it's quite a long drum in this one lol. But I will keep looking. Thanks, Terry.
Great job on the RDF Terry. That's the mechanical filtration taken care of; are you going to plumb it up to flow through your Pro midi filter for the biological action to take place or do you have another plan?
Hi Dayan, Thank you. Have you seen the build of my new Polypropylene RDF. This is the first run I had with it: ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html thanks, Terry.
Great video and it shows how you can build things DIY…… just wondering how long the eBay parts will stand up to constant use ie pump, driveshaft etc etc…. But definitely a thumbs up from me 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi mate, and thank you. Good to hear you enjoy the videos and thanks for the 👍👍👍. Have you seen the newer version of the RDF I made? It's been running on my pond now for over 2 years, and not been a problem at all. Have a look and see what you think: ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html take care mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty cheers Terry I’ll take a look at it 👍🏻 I’ve bought a Burtons Drum recently and I’ve had to show everyone on my Channel it’s faults… should of built my own like you 🤷🏼♂️🙄 we live and learn!
where did you get the components from and what are they? where and what is the spec on the motor that turns the drum, where did you get the stainless steel gause, and how did you make the frame for it to sit on??
What can I say mate, Fantastic work really professional looking and as you say very silent, bet you sat back with a brew smiling your head off at this one :) what did you use to seal the wood? is it waterproof paint or resin ? TOPJOB! kev
Hi Kev, Thanks mate. I used a very expensive 2 pack pond paint. But I must say it seems really good. It is fish safe but due to the cost of it, I only did all on the inside of the filter box. The outside is normal paint. It has got to go some if it's going to be better than the Pro system. But only time will tell. Thanks mate, Terry.
Hi Terry, Did the airstone idea work? How's it going with the plans and testing the drum? I'm building my new pond soon so would love to build a drum, I just have no idea where to get all the parts! Thanks Rory
Hi Rory, The drum filter has been running on my pond for a week and a half now and have to say it's not put a foot wrong. I am in the process of building the plans at the moment and there is a lot to get down plus all the videos. I'm at over 30 pages now but getting there. There are still a couple of things I want to change before I release them, so I'll get them done first. I will post it on my website when I have released them so everybody knows. Thanks, Terry.
Your filter drum and your water pipe bringing water into the filter: why did you not make an end wall to your rotating durn with a hole in it in the center for your support board and your water pipe to go through, that was higher than the water level inside your filter ? Then your water coming into the filter would not leave trash inside your square box that had to be occasionally cleaned. If your water pipe that dumped water to be filtered, was able to have all that water remain inside your rotating drum to be filtered through the screen before it could get to the bottom of your square box, you'd rarely have to take the drum out of the box to clean the box. Other than that, I like your build of that filter. What did they total build cost you for that filter?
Hi, I've not yet worked out the cost as I'm still tinkering around with it. but I must admit I am very pleased with it as I expected more teething problems than I got as there's quite a lot of mechanics involved. I don't get much dirt settle in the first chamber now as I have a small aquarium air pump and a couple of air stones both sides to keep the dirt from settling. Thanks for the input. Terry.
Great Video : ) So what are the plans for the RDF take out the first two drums in your filter system and just leave the bio drum? Cant wait for the plans to come out Also can you make two versions I know your metric can you convert it for us Yanks.
Hi Robert, I've got to make a moving bed to suit the drum filter, I really can't break up the Pro system, It's a cracking filter. Anyway, if this doesn't give me gin clear water like the Pro did, the Pro will be coming back lol. The plans will be in feet and inches and metric. Thanks, Terry.
Thanks Tony, that's the good thing about an RDF, you can put what flow you want through it. I have it on my pond now with an 8000 lph inline pump. Workes really well. Terry.
Thank you, There's not room for the two of them in the shed and I want to keep the Pro together as a system as it's a really good filter. so I'm going to build another box for the moving bed. Thanks, Terry.
Hi Richard, thank you. you can get the build plans for this RDF and the New PP RDF on my website diypondfilters.com If I can help further just give me a shout. Terry.
I'm as we speak doing the plans and cost at the same time. There's quite a lot of video work, but I will get it done as soon as possible mate. I want to be sure everything works as it should. Terry.
Hi Andre, The main part to find would be the drum ends. You can use 450mm drain pipe if you have it there. The rest is washing machine parts and a wiper motor. I bought everything new and it cost me £550.00. This was the next video: ua-cam.com/video/YHQnm4lsGeA/v-deo.html Terry.
Really nice job. What is the size of the mesh? I tried 100 mesh stainles but the problem is after a while I have to take it out and pressure wash it as it gets clogged.
I've only seen these radial filters in videos, and don't have one myself. However, I do know that drip irrigation filters use 200 mesh. I would guess that a pond would use the same or even wider than a filter for "tap water." I would guess something closer to 400 would still be plenty fine
I have a 350m. stainless steel and have to tell you the tap water does not go through if don't pressurize it. And in my case it is gravity system. So I had to reduce to 100. Now, every time I need to clean I am using pressure washer :) Other then that I am very happy. I just put the mesh under angle and let the water go by. Will have to take some time to take a video.
oh wow I must be confused. I was under the impression that the mesh number referred to microns. meaning a higher number is more open and "free flowing"
Hi Jack, and thank you. I don't build these RDF's to sell unfortunately mate, But I do have a newer version of the RDF out now you will find here: ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html You can get the complete DIY RDF building plans and instructions for it on my website diypondfilters.com This new RDF is built using Polypropylene PVC instead of 3/4 ply as used in the original one. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
How many times does the drum rotate on a cleaning cycle? I assume you can vary the length of the cleaning cycle if you need to. I bet this thing is in for a lot of future iterations :)
hello terry i got a question for ya i want to make something for when my koi spwan i missed it last year but was wondering would it be ok to use a old curtain rapped around a frame and sat on the bottom i was gonna use the green stuff that goes around the oudside of scaffold when mine gets taken down but my scaffold might not come down in time also what month do u think i should put it in. p.s your pond is looking nice mate u done a good job of that
Hi Dennis, Thank you. Hope your well mate. This is the time of year for spawning, especially now the pond water has warmed up. spawning mats and mops can be made of many things. You can buy spawning mats and brushes. Your best bet is to have a look here on UA-cam, there's loads of ideas here. The main thing is your water quality, it has to be good for them to spawn. When they start spawning it can be very early morning, maybe still dark. Trouble is once they start spawning, the others will start to eat the eggs and they will eat them there selves if left. So don't be too long in getting the eggs out if you want to keep them. Just make sure whatever you use is fish safe and not been in contact with any chemicals. Hope this helps mate.
yeh i been watching vids on here how to make something out of yarn but was looking on ebay and see the brushes 4 for 30 quid and they big i will probly end up getting them it was aughust when they spawned last year but if i get the brushes now would it be ok to leave them in for 2 /3 months if it comes to it it would be ok init cheres mate
Hi Dennis, I have never used the brushes myself, but I don't see a problem with leaving them in the pond. If they got dirty you could just whip them out and hose them down. Terry.
Hello mate, thanks for your kind comments. No I'm afraid not. I don't know anything about them. I remember them flying over years ago. very impressive aircraft. Thanks, Terry.
Hi Terry, I wondered if you could give me roughly the overall size of the rdf excluding the stand as I am planning to install one above the pro system to include both systemsregardsChris
Terry wow you don't stand still when it comes to filters my friend. I built your filter system with the good old three drums last year now you've got it down just one. It looks and sounds like your onto a winner. Are you intending to run it along side your existing filter system or will that become redundant?
Hi Bernie, I can't resist a challenge lol. I won't run both, but it has got to be good to replace the Pro system. I am going to give it a try on the pond and see how it goes. I have had to build a moving bed to go with it so were down to 2 tubs lol. I have to say it worked better than I ever imagined and it's the fact that none of the dirt stays in the filter like all other filters and it's self cleaning. I do love my Pro system though so it's going to be a hard decision. Terry.
Ah, thats what you ment when you said you are building something that doesnt require maintanance.. a Drumfilter.. I was "hoping" you where making something that wasnt inventet yet ;) but, its great that you show it is possible to make drumfilters on your own, rather than buying them in stores.
hehe, yes your are right.. I dont think it is the problem about making the setup, but making the axel watertight would be a small puzzle for me to do, sekond, I have no clue about electonic, so that would require help, if I had to build one
Water proofing was not a problem, and if I can do the electrics, anybody can. I've kept them really simple. All will be explained in the plans when I get them released. Terry.
might be true, there isnt much to the filter build, other than being able to messure and cut the stuff in the the right sizes, and that is really not an issue for me.. but at the moment I do not have time to focus on a build like this for the time it take to make one.. maybe one day Ill do on, unless I figure out how to make a more cleaver setup.. yet, I dont think there are many filters that can out perform the drum filter.. - yet, if you want a crystal clear lake, I think adding a papir roll filter after the drum would be an awesome combination..
I must admit I do love my Pro system. It's not put a foot wrong in 2 years and always given me fantastic water. But then this filter does look really good and has one or two improvements on the Pro system. There's no cleaning for a start, and also the captured dirt instantly goes out of the filtration system and does not sit in it for days like the Pro. If I don't get the gin clear water like I have with the Pro I will bring the Pro back. Thanks Richard, Terry.
Hi mate, I've just had a look for you but there's no name on it, and the eBay link no longer works. I got it on eBay and it was a front screen wiper motor to fit a VW Golf if that helps. Terry.
Hi David, I do have a newer version of the RDF out, made using Polypropylene instead of the ply. Here are some of the videos containing the build and first run. Hope this helps mate, Terry.# Work Starts On The New RDF. Building the RDF case. ua-cam.com/video/5NYIMZEh4UY/v-deo.html Good Pond Clean & More On The RDF. Drive and drum. ua-cam.com/video/IFXsFsBT_lY/v-deo.html This Ones Just About The New RDF. First Run For The RDF. ua-cam.com/video/wn4RV7xbB8Y/v-deo.html
Hi Paul, A good manufactured RDF this size would cost around £2000 upwards. They do make different size. I have a newer RDF version out now. You can see it in this video ua-cam.com/video/zEckLmPwioM/v-deo.html Terry.
Hi Mate, have you a link to the waterproof paint you used my mate keeps birds of prey and he needs a paint to use so he can wash of there waste thanks bud Kev 👍
Hi Kev, I got it on ebay but it's well expensive. £30 a ltr. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191089386745?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&var=490284044508&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Hi Lee, I'm just building the moving bed so I can take out the Pro and fit the rdf in the shed. Thing is I've got to set the Pro up outside so I can re-pipe for rdf. Plus I leave the paint a week to dry really hard. Terry.
There is always work to be done with pond keeping I am off this week rebuilding mine due to a leak just couldn't find it to repair it. :( . Anyhow might have to pop over and see you again when you all sorted to see it in action as thinking of buying one.
Like I said in the video, this rdf has got to be good to keep up with the Pro system. I do love the way it works and the fact that the dirt doesn't sit in the filter for a week. So I've got to give it a go. I've just been looking at UV's. for the rdf WoW! £300.00+ for a UV is crazy.
Please try in TomTop.com, you will 13 w uv for 10 dollars. You can buy 2 or 3 of them and save money. I have personally ordered that for my future build. I got it now, its too bad for the cost.
Hi Richard, I moved the Pro out of the shed and put it on the patio and set it up to keep the pond filtered while I re-plumbed the shed for the RDF. Got the RDF installed, switched the Pro off and went to start the RDF. Switched on and all was running well. went to look at the pond and you couldn't see the fish, the pond was full of dirt. It was then I remembered I had no one way valve on the Pro and all the dirt it had caught went back into the pond lol. Never see my pond so bad lol. so the RDF had a right job on form the word go. It's been on the pond 2 days now and has it just about got it cleared up. Apart from that mate which was totally my fault, its going really well and I'm really pleased with it. Thanks Terry.
Me and my good lady said the same thing tonight. I told her he had uploaded another video and her first words were "The guy that used to have the jolly music" hehe. Looking forward to how this drum filter performs. Thanks for the video.
Hi, I'm writing from Thailand. I was wondering if I can have your email. My dad has been watching your video and very fascinated by how you make the machine. He is now trying to replicate it and has some questions about it. I was wondering if you could give some advices. Thanks Wa
Hi Wa, Hello from the UK. You will find the build plans for this RDF on my website diypondfilters.com I have built a new version of an RDF and it's built using PVC. you will find them there as well. My email is pondfilters@gmail.com Terry
Hi Ken, if it performs as well as I think it will, it will be a great little filter. I will be doing plans of the build and have them on my website once I know all is well with it. thanks, Terry.
Nice build, looks awesome. awesome craftmanship. :) I am trying to search ebay for the nozzle, but not able to find it. can you please help me sharing ebay link. :) Would love to see your updates. Subscribed :
Hi and thank you. Very much appreaciated. You can get them from farming suppiers. I'm still testing the rdf and may change things, so I don't wan't to tell you wrong as I may still change them, and as they cost £10.00 each there not cheap. Also the company I used are UK suppliers only and do not ship abroad. Terry.
Hi Matthew, I can't release anything at the moment as it's not been run on a regular basis and things might get changed if they don't work as expected. I am working on the plans at this very moment. You can get the mesh on eBay if that helps. Terry.
if you contact E I P ENG IND PLASITICS they are in hampshire they are suppliers of poly prop you need max 9mm biege sheet then look on ebay for a plastic hot air welding gun with tacking jet and speed jet E I P will also supply you with welding rod you can make your own tanks and barrels you are clever enough to do it no more than 150 sterling for the plastic to do the lot one of my companies in the UK was H T S ELECTROPLASTIC
Hi Humphrey, I did go to IEP, Ltd for a quote and it came back at £241.00. to make the filter box. I do have a heat gun but most people won't, so if you add that to the cost it soon mounts up mate. I'd also have to add some structure to the outside as it's only 9mm and would need help to stop it bowing. The case I build was less than £100.00. Thanks for the idea though mate, it's good to know. Terry
hi terry that was that a price for a whole tank or just the plastic can you tell the size of the box and i will let you know what you should pay regarding the heat gun i have seen a proper welding kit on ebay for sixty pounds once bought you can make breading tanks etc a eight by four by 9mm pp should cost no more than 80 pounds you could come down to 6mm regards
Wrighty thanks buddy. Keep me posted. I think you could be onto a winner with this one. 😀
Any developments Terry with this RDF? Itching to see how it's going. 😀
Terry the RDF looks and works fantastic my friend . Excellent work as always 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jim, the test went better than I imagined. Thank, Terry
nice one wrighty what amazing job you have done building the rdf and the muck coming out wow
Thanks Andrew, I did have one or two headaches but got there in the end. Thanks again, Terry.
outstanding !!!! def watching how this turns out in long term. You my friend have done a wonderful job not only in your videos but your craftsmanship.
Thank you Jon Jon, very much appreciated, Have you seen the new video. Released tonight ua-cam.com/video/YHQnm4lsGeA/v-deo.html Terry.
Thanks for all your videos I do find them very helpful and look forward to your advise and inventions each time
Thank you Angela. Very much appreciated. Terry.
Absolutely brilliant, wish i had your technical skills.
Absolutely brilliant !!! Mite have a go at building one of these. Fantastic build.😀
Hi Mark. Thank you, very much appreciated. Terry.
Absolutely brilliant mate, thank you for sharing. I look forward to buying the plans and finally getting clear water ha. Looking forward to your next video
Hi Orfeyo, thank you. I will get the plans out asap but there is quite a lot to do. Thanks again, Terry.
Hi Terry,
Awesome build! Very impressive :)
I installed an AEM drum filter for a friend and RDF'S are amazing, one thing that seems to help (you might find this useful) is if you put an airstone in the first section where the inlet is, it stops rubbish settling in it and ensures it goes into the drum.
This is very well timed, I'm planning on rebuilding my grow-on soon and would love a drum, but can't afford one.
I presume it would be easy to make it gravity fed, just get a float switch which works the other way in the clean side and have 110mm inlet/outlets
Hope it all goes well!
Looking forward to seeing the plans and a rough build cost, hopefully I can then downsize it slightly and give it a go!
Hi mate, I would just have the water level in the filter equal to the water level of the pond and pump from the clean water side. I would have a check valve in the pipe to the filter so you were able to turn the water off if needed. Terry.
Sorry that's what I meant, (the drum's height would be set so the water level (pond level) is under the gutter and you would have the normal slide or ball valve on the inlet and it then feeding a bio chamber of some description and have the pump after that :)
Basically it would be a combi drum.
The possibilities are endless! Very excited to get started now
Thanks
Rory
Really impressed with your drum filter!
Thank you. Terry.
Another wicked video, you're a genius dude. Love the stuff you've made!
Although I did miss the "happy ponding" at the end 😂
Thank mate, very much appreciated. Glad you like it. sorry I forgot :( Terry.
Brilliant work Terry
Hi Richard. thanks mate, very much appreciated. Terry.
As always impressive job. If this is better than your other filters count me in for one of the plan sets. Looking forward to your follow-ups it was great to watch the first test.
Hi William, Thank you. It really looks promising, but I have to say "it's really got to go some to beat the Pro filter. Thanks again, Terry.
Fantastic!! Thanks for the video! I am very excited to try to build my own now. Really enjoyed the video!
Hi, and thank you. I do have a newer version of the DIY RDF you'll see in my newer videos and can find on my website diypondfilters.com hope this helps, Terry.
Brilliant Terry, just what I need for now, look forward to plans release.RegardsChris
Your very welcome mate.
AMAZING effort! Fair play to you. If only I hadn't just finished one of your midi/pro systems!...
Hi Simon, This does take a lot more making. You will love the Midi system. I still love my Pro system and if this doesn't give me the water quality I'm use to the Pro will be back. Thanks, Terry.
PS. The Midi system will always sell if you decided to.
I do love the midi system! Water is crystal clear, parameters are spot on and maintenance is easy! Cheers!
Terry.
Amazing work. well done
Thanks Martyn, glad you like it.
Now I know how it works, incredible idea.
Excellent vídeo.
Were you buy spray jet ??
Link??
thanks for quick reply Terry, I am planning to fit the rdf above the existing pro, I need length, width and height, inc all fitting excluding stand. Thanking You.Regards Chris
Hi Chris L 123cm x W 63cm x H 70cm hope this helps mate. Terry.
What type of wood do you use for the rdf cabinet? Where I live termites will have a feast with it. It is my second time watching the video. Thank you.
Great filter.......Where did you get the nozzles from for the spray bar ?
Hi. Did you ever do a plan. Amazing job you have done. I am really interested in the control panel mainly
Terry.
Hi. Thanks I have watched many of your vids now. Do you have a direct contact email? I have so many questions. lol.
Well what can I say wrighty (excellent job 10 /10 ) are ya plans about every? Saved a fortune I guess.
I'm well impressed with your craftsmanship.
Can I buy the plans ? I understand if you want to keep them in your back pocket wrighty. But I'm well impressed.
Hi Alan, thank you, very much appreciated. I must confess I'm no carpenter or painter lol. I just scrape by, ask the wife lol. I think you'd be looking at £3000.00+ for one this size retail, so I have saved a few shillings. Thanks, Terry.
Once I'm happy everything is running as it should and I get the plans drawn up, yes they will be on my website mate. Terry.
Really really good well made and really good video
Thanks Matthew, very much appreciated. Terry.
Looks like it's gonna work awesome. When can we expect a set of plans for it to be available?
Hi Brad, it will be a while as there's a heck of a lot to explain. But once I know it's ok I will get stuck in to the plans. Thanks, Terry.
Thanks for the reply. I already have a set of your barrel plans and should have it up and running on my next off days. I really enjoy your videos.
Great job on the RDF Terry. That's the mechanical filtration taken care of; are you going to plumb it up to flow through your Pro midi filter for the biological action to take place or do you have another plan?
Hi Mate, yes I'm going to build another box just for a moving bed. I'm reluctant to take the Pro system apart just for the moving bed. Terry.
this is quite a beauty
Hi Brian, You can find all the info for the RDF on my website in the Shop. diypondfilters.com Terry.
Thanks Terry, glad its running well you hard work has paid off yet again :)
Hi Terry,
Did the airstone idea work?
How's it going with the plans and testing the drum?
I'm building my new pond soon so would love to build a drum, I just have no idea where to get all the parts!
Thanks
Rory
Hi Rory,
The drum filter has been running on my pond for a week and a half now and have to say it's not put a foot wrong.
Wrighty Thanks for the quick reply, and thanks for the effort you put in! I look forward to videos and the plans
Rory
Thanks, Terry.
excellent video to fullly use the expensive rdf shouldn't one have a higher flow rate?
Thanks Tony, that's the good thing about an RDF, you can put what flow you want through it. I have it on my pond now with an 8000 lph inline pump. Workes really well. Terry.
I bet your drum filter didn't cost as much as the drum filters on the market and still looks as good
Hi Jeff, and thank you 👍👍 You can see my latest RDF I built in this video: ua-cam.com/video/wFeaF2E7-uk/v-deo.html thanks again mate, Terry.
Good job there Terry, you just need to learn chinese now. :) I will have to come visit you again and see this in action.
Hi Lee, It's competing with the Pro system at the minute so it's got to be good. Thanks, Terry.
Bloody brilliant :)
Thanks mate, it's appreciated, Terry.
Why not connect to the pro system and have three moving beds? new rdf build look great by the way.
Thank you, There's not room for the two of them in the shed and I want to keep the Pro together as a system as it's a really good filter. so I'm going to build another box for the moving bed. Thanks, Terry.
VERY GOOD LOVE IT CAN I BUY ONE ?
Hi Richard, thank you. you can get the build plans for this RDF and the New PP RDF on my website diypondfilters.com If I can help further just give me a shout. Terry.
Woops lol, sounds like it's doing a really good job, did you manage to work out ruffley cost for the build?
I'm as we speak doing the plans and cost at the same time. There's quite a lot of video work, but I will get it done as soon as possible mate. I want to be sure everything works as it should. Terry.
Excellent work.....
What pump you have used for nozzle spray?
Hi Imam, I used a 150w water booster pump. you can get them on eBay. Terry.
great video, will all of the supplies be avalible in the usa? how much will it cost to build
Now, every time I need to clean I am using pressure washer :)
Other then that I am very happy. I just put the mesh under angle and let the water go by. Will have to take some time to take a video.
oh wow I must be confused. I was under the impression that the mesh number referred to microns. meaning a higher number is more open and "free flowing"
no, the mesh is like pixels. Number of holes in 1 square inch (if I am not wrong) :D
You need to install a uv light that will stop the biofilm from building up and clogging the screen
Hi just wondering if you make these to sell? Or could I buy the dimensions and a list of parts you used so I can make one myself thanks!
Hi kb698, Yes it can all be adjusted. The time between cleaning and the amount of rotation. Thanks, Terry.
hello terry i got a question for ya i want to make something for when my koi spwan i missed it last year but was wondering would it be ok to use a old curtain rapped around a frame and sat on the bottom i was gonna use the green stuff that goes around the oudside of scaffold when mine gets taken down but my scaffold might not come down in time also what month do u think i should put it in. p.s your pond is looking nice mate u done a good job of that
Hi Dennis, Thank you.
Terry.
awesome video m8. I'm genuinely impressed with your drum filter, very good job. Random question, are you a vulcan bomber fan?
Hello mate, thanks for your kind comments. No I'm afraid not. I don't know anything about them. I remember them flying over years ago. very impressive aircraft. Thanks, Terry.
Wrighty ok lol. Just recognised your intro music from the the vulcan hanger tour lol.
Hi Terry, I wondered if you could give me roughly the overall size of the rdf excluding the stand as I am planning to install one above the pro system to include both systemsregardsChris
Hi Chris, did you want the size of the filter box or the total length including pumps motors and pipes?
What kind of rubber on the partition wall ?
Terry
wow you don't stand still when it comes to filters my friend.
Terry.
I understand your dilemma. I thought that maybe it would go before the pro system giving you a double whammy so to speak????
I don't have the room, but the RDF is a filter on it's own and should do what the Pro does if I've got it right. Terry.
Ah, thats what you ment when you said you are building something that doesnt require maintanance..
a Drumfilter.. I was "hoping" you where making something that wasnt inventet yet ;)
but, its great that you show it is possible to make drumfilters on your own, rather than buying them in stores.
Hi and thank you. couldn't say too much incase it didn't work lol. Terry.
hehe, yes your are right..
I'll have my moving bed after the drum as its essential to deal with the ammonia and nitrite.
do you have any plans and parts list for your RDF
grate job mate
Thank you for your kind comment. Terry.
Spot on mate cheers
I am considering if to make one, or stick with the last build I did
I must admit I do love my Pro system.
Hi Terry. Can you give any details of the drum motor you used? Thank you.
Hi David, I used a car window wiper motor. Terry.
@@Wrighty Thanks Terry. Are you prepared to reveal the brand as I find recommendations are best.
Hi mate, I've just had a look for you but there's no name on it, and the eBay link no longer works. I got it on eBay and it was a front screen wiper motor to fit a VW Golf if that helps. Terry.
@@Wrighty Many thanks Terry. That gives me something to work with. Having only recently seen your drum filter, I think it’s superb!
Hi David, I do have a newer version of the RDF out, made using Polypropylene instead of the ply. Here are some of the videos containing the build and first run. Hope this helps mate, Terry.#

How much do drum filters cost and do they come in different sizes
Hi Paul, A good manufactured RDF this size would cost around £2000 upwards. They do make different size. I have a newer RDF version out now. You can see it in this video ua-cam.com/video/zEckLmPwioM/v-deo.html Terry.
Wrighty how u sorted out a plan and how much to build one becuz I would Defo pay u to do me one
Hi David, sorry but I just don't have time mate. The plans to build one are on my website diypondfilters.com thanks, Terry.
Hi Mate, have you a link to the waterproof paint you used my mate keeps birds of prey and he needs a paint to use so he can wash of there waste thanks bud Kev 👍
Hi Kev, I got it on ebay but it's well expensive. £30 a ltr. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191089386745?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&var=490284044508&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Thank you Terry much appreciated
Hi could you please tell me where you got the spray jets i want to change mine and can't find that type in oz . Cheers
Hi Gaz, drop me an email. pondfilters@gmail.com
Could I be cheeky and ask were you got your mesh from please
Hi Lee, I got the mesh on ebay. Terry.
What did you use to coat the wooden tank?
Hi Owen, It's a 2 pack pond paint. Thanks, Terry.
theres gotta be a way you can spin the drum with the sprayers
Hi mate, I have thought about this but the actual spray is quite fine and not powerful enough to move the drum. Thanks, Terry.
Any updates terry has it made a difference to clarity and how often is it cleaning ?
I got it now, its too bad for the cost.
unable to edit, i mean, its not too bad. its good. Pardon me, english is not my first language.
How's the filter experiment going mate
Do you ever come out to peoples pond to give advise ?
HI Angela, Not usually. You could take some pictures and send them to me @ pondfilters@gmail.com I'll help if I can. Terry.
Love all Your videos , but miss the old music
Me and my good lady said the same thing tonight. I told her he had uploaded another video and her first words were "The guy that used to have the jolly music" hehe. Looking forward to how this drum filter performs. Thanks for the video.
Thanks guy's, I will change it as soon as I have time. Promise :) Thanks, Terry.
Awesome!!
Hi, I'm writing from Thailand. I was wondering if I can have your email. My dad has been watching your video and very fascinated by how you make the machine. He is now trying to replicate it and has some questions about it. I was wondering if you could give some advices.
Thanks
Wa
Hi Wa, Hello from the UK. You will find the build plans for this RDF on my website diypondfilters.com I have built a new version of an RDF and it's built using PVC. you will find them there as well. My email is pondfilters@gmail.com Terry
hi another fantastic job well done l think l will have a go myself cheers 🔨📏📐
Hi Ken, if it performs as well as I think it will, it will be a great little filter. I will be doing plans of the build and have them on my website once I know all is well with it. thanks, Terry.
do mor vidios love them!!!!!!!!
Thanks Spencer, very much appreciated. Terry.
whens next update mate.
Will be soon mate. Been a bit busy and want to give it a good run to make sure everything is good and working. thanks, Terry.
Terry.
is there any chance you can link the parts to make this I'm finding it hard to find mesh and other parts thanks matty
Hi Matthew, I can't release anything at the moment as it's not been run on a regular basis and things might get changed if they don't work as expected. I am working on the plans at this very moment. You can get the mesh on eBay if that helps. Terry.
can you not make i used the drum and tank out of plastic poly prop i used to make something similar for electroplating nuts and bolts
I did look into it but the cots of just the case would have been £400.00 plus. Terry.
if you contact E I P ENG IND PLASITICS they are in hampshire they are suppliers of poly prop you need max 9mm biege sheet then look on ebay for a plastic hot air welding gun with tacking jet and speed jet E I P will also supply you with welding rod you can make your own tanks and barrels you are clever enough to do it no more than 150 sterling for the plastic to do the lot one of my companies in the UK was H T S ELECTROPLASTIC
Hi Humphrey, I will certainly have a look into it mate. Sounds good. Thanks for the info, very much appreciated, Terry.
