- In a 1972 concert on the BBC Gordon Lightfoot sings a big hit for him which was written by Kris Kristofferson.
Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, Jr.(born November 17, 1938) is a Canadian singer-songwriter who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music, and has been credited for helping define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and internationally as a folk-rock legend.
Lightfoot's songs, including "For Lovin' Me", "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon of Darkness"-a number one hit on the U.S. country charts with Marty Robbins' cover in 1965- and the 1967 Detroit riot-generated "Black Day In July" brought him international recognition in the 1960s. He experienced chart success in Canada with his own recordings, beginning in 1962 with the Number 3 hit "(Remember Me) I'm the One". Lightfoot's recordings then made an impact on the international music charts as well in the 1970s, with songs such as "If You Could Read My Mind" (1970) (Number 5 on the US charts), "Sundown" (1974), "Carefree Highway" (1974), "Rainy Day People" (1975), all reaching number 1, and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
(1976) (reaching number 2).
The best version by a country mile
I agree. RIP Gordon
Can’t wrap my head around why Gordon’s version is buried deep in scroll on the tube, No disrespect to the other artists, but the studio version of this by Gordon is absolutely beautiful, Very special
Best version of this song ever
Feeling good was easy lord when Gordon sang the blues…
This man's talent is endless even after 50 odd years, still my hero!
Thanks for checking in with us.
The strength of a song is in how many people can make it their own. This is a wonderful cover by the fabulous Gordon Lightfoot.
A great Canadian icon gone to soon R I P gordon
In his total career in writing and singing great songs Gordon Lightfoot never used anything other than the fourth and fifth fret on his guitar. Watch any of his videos and you'll see. It was how he taught himself to play the guitar and those two cords had all the notes he needed. Amazing
I think this version is better then any other by a long shot!!!!
Gordon met Kris in Nashville shortly after Kris had written “Me and Bobby McGee”; he recorded a cover version before Janice did.
I had never heard it, Janice Joplin’s version was the first (and only) one I knew for years
But unfortunately, before Gordon Lightfoot could record it, it was Roger Miller who did it first
He sings this touching song in such a relaxed and effortless manner. Gordon absolutely owns it! The best ‘male’ version I’ve heard.
Such a wonderful musician and amazing three piece band
Awesome 👌 thank you jan hammer
I actually saw and heard GL do this song live in 1972,
Damn !! I never knew this version existed !!
Pure Talent. 👍🏻Amazing! He's really nice looking too. 😉
I've never heard Gordon sing this song, so that makes this one of the coolest videos on UA-cam.
Gordon Lightfoot ! That unmistakeable Unique Voice of his ! I got this Song with him singing it on an Old Audio Tape somewhere besides having it on Digital ! Always Loved his Songs !
Awesome version, first time hearing it.
Thanks for checking in with us.
This was the best cover of the country classic--even better than KK's and the hundreds of others who have recorded it.
Thanks Steve for the visit and I agree.
For my taste, you can't beat Janis.... But this comes a close 2nd !!! I know KK wrote it, but I don't like his version. In my mind the bluesy feel suits the song better
This has got to be the best ever song that really makes you feel the sadness and loss and regret of a lost love, and let's face it we've all been there. Gordon's version has all the feeling to make you really feel those emotions and make you wonder what might have been if you hadn't been so stupid all those years ago.
The origins of the song are actually quite different. Kris Kristofferson wanted to get into writing music,
Late producer Fred Foster's friend, songwriter Boudleaux Bryant, kept teasing him that he only visited Bryant's offices to see his secretary, Barbara "Bobby" McKee,
Inspired by the wisecrack, Foster approached Kristofferson, then a young songwriter on his roster. Foster pitched the idea for a song he titled "Me and Bobby McKee" - with the twist in the hook, of course, being that the "Bobby" in question was female, he later told him. Kristofferson misheard the name and thought it was McGee

Thanks for checking out my site.
Gordon’s version was toned down probably because of his voice range but have you ever heard PInks version ? I think she has the best one yet .
Still like Waylon’s version even better
Sexy, Sheila Johnson, Drumheller Alberta 1968, where are you ? Mike Salvador ..........

Gordon was a great, albeit wasted, talent. Give me Kris Kristoferson's version anytime.
