Suboxone is a medication often prescribed to individuals suffering from opioid addiction. However, the sublingual form of Suboxone is extremely acidic and destroys tooth enamel. It turns out that Indivior Inc., rushed the sublingual form of Suboxone to market as their patent on the tablet form was about to run out. Their fear of facing generic competition caused them to rush a medication to market that causes a host of dental problems. Further, someone recovering from drug addiction is trying to get back on their feet. But what if the medication that is supposed to help is causing equally troubling problems?
In this episode of David v. Goliath, hosts Matt Dolman and Stan Gipe discuss the newest emerging mass tort; the Suboxone tooth decay lawsuit. Recent findings show illustrate the sublingual film version of Suboxone is extremely acidic and causes the degradation of the protective outer layer of teeth and tooth enamel. This can have a cataclysmic effect on people’s lives, and even impact their ability to find employment.
A petition was recently filed with the Joint Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) to consolidate the approximately 100 Suboxone lawsuits that have been filed in Federal Courts throughout the United States. The JPML is set to meet in Santa Barbara, California, on January 25, 2024, to determine the fate of the Suboxone lawsuit. We project the lawsuits will be consolidated before a single Judge in United States Federal Court for the Northern District of Ohio. We believe a steering committee will be selected by late February. In the meantime, anyone who has experienced dental problems while taking Suboxone before 2022, may be able to recover compensation.
Please note that a growing body of Suboxone dental decay lawsuits allege Indivior (manufacturer of Suboxone) failed to warn users of the risk for advanced tooth decay and an assortment of other dental issues. In fact, the number of adverse event reports (negative outcomes) were so significant that the warning label was finally changed in 2022. Please note that we have seen numerous reports (many from our own clients) of broken teeth, tooth loss, gum infection, oral infections, gum disease, cavities, tooth erosion and other dental injuries. It is clear that sublingual film version of Suboxone has a negative impact on dental health and the overall risk of dental problems should have resulted in a change to the warning label as early as 2016.

I am the same way I just found out about this a week ago. All this time I couldn't understand why my mouth was essentially falling apart.
I used to have a perfect smile with straight teeth. I’ve been prescribed suboxone for 10 years and was never once told potential dental problems or my feet swelling or my drive for anything. Always took great care of my teeth but wasted efforts. Never once given an option for exit strategy or long term therapy options. I didn’t know what these words meant. I won’t smile anymore because this medication has ruined my self esteem.They need to pay for me getting new teeth. I’ve been robbed and lied to. Impossible to get off of.

I was on Suboxone for 3 years. My teeth started falling apart shortly after I got off of it. The most afflicted area of decay is on mostly the right side of my mouth, which is where I always placed the Suboxone. At no point was I informed that this was a side effect or ways to prevent it... I practice regular oral hygiene. I had a few teeth pulled since then and others that need to be, and my worst fear is coming true; over the last few years, teeth in the front of my mouth started to decay rapidly. I'm looking at getting several teeth pulled and getting partial dentures at 35 years old.
I am very sorry to learn about what you have gone through. It is clear the manufacturer knew the harm sublingual Suboxone could cause to a user's dental health.

How can I go about getting involved in this lawsuit?
I now have full upper dentures that do not stay in my mouth. I can’t even bite down properly and it keeps me from being able to enjoy most of the foods I used to enjoy eating.
My bottom teeth I only have seven left and they are on their way out as well. Which leaves me with an uncomfortable fitting partial.
My poorly fitted dentures have made my life so bad that I can rarely enjoy a meal anymore and can only eat soft foods. I haven’t gone out to dinner alone or with friends and family for well over ten years because of this problem. It has changed my life severely for the worst and I don’t even feel comfortable going out in public anymore. I believe I have agoraphobia from this problem at this point.
I knew something wasn’t right due to the alarming rate that I was loosing my teeth over the past 10 + years.
I even mentioned it to my dentist that I thought it could be from this medication but he just ignored me when I mentioned that to him.
I assumed it was due to the Suboxone film because I was brushing my teeth two to three times daily and flossing after every meal and snack that I ate every day.

Oh my goodness, it saved my daughter from opiate addiction, but after years on these strips you would be shocked at her mouth now. She had beautiful perfect white teeth, and now in last few years, has none, teeth completely gone destroyed, down to her gums. It seem to happen so fast that they were gone before she even realized, and now she does not even talk to people (and she was the middle of everything before), and it is so bad, she is embarrassed to show dentist, and the cost will be tens of thousands of dollars to replace her teeth. It was not something like a tooth here or there that needed attention, but all of them decayed. Hope to find class action suit or get help, thank you. and PS my youngest daughter on it as well, has suffered severe decay as well, but not quite as bad as my older daughter

This is news to me. I’ve been taking Suboxone since 2010 and I haven’t had any problems with my teeth whatsoever. In fact, I’ve had one cavity in my entire life.
Let me tell you something I wish I would’ve been able to get certain teeth put in. I was just hearing about this in 2022 at the end of 2022 to be exact. It cost me more than just all of my teeth, I’ve never touched, heroin, methamphetamines, crack, none of that, I have pictures of me with my teeth were perfect. I didn’t have anxiety I didn’t have PTSD I didn’t have depression. I have been treated so badly also loss of income. Nobody wanted to hire somebody who was missing half of their teeth when I tell you it’s not just the dental part of this but the mental is much I’m mad I’m angry in my life and my time cannot be given back. Thank you for speaking on the dental partthat ended up creating the mental part
Same thing with me. Perfect teeth was a sales manager for a huge nationwide dealership top 5 salespeople in all of the east coast and lost my career once i started taking the films and lost my teeth. Today, still on the meds having to work for instacart and door dash because i cannot look people in the eyes.
Me as well. Door dash and instacart because I’ve had such a hard time finding work because of my horrible teeth. I wish I would have known because I would have gotten off of it and on something else. I think that I was the only one during the pandemic that was happy to wear a mask because they pulled out seven of my teeth and I had to walk around like that for years. Being a woman in my 30s that used to have confidence in myself to feeling like a monster was a horrible feeling. My dentist just finally made me a flipper after years of me begging them to give me some kind of denture so I could finally feel like a person again.
I’ve had to teach my self how to talk to people without showing inside my mouth. I can’t smile, or barely EAT!! I am constantly speaking with my hand over my mouth. And I am starting to see decay in my front teeth no matter how much I brush and floss. I feel like the more I brush and floss the faster they go. I literally have 4 teeth on top and 8 (if u can call most of these teeth bc they’re just prices) on the bottom.

I wish someone would tell my why Texas does not meet criteria for this lawsuit, the statute of limitations should be challenged for 2 reasons. 1. The warning label they put on the drug does not even specifically say dental issues, and 2. The injury reason was not known the date they put the label on the drug. So 2yrs from that date is not really accurate. I feel this is confusing because of the anittrust law suit against Indvior.

Just now hearing about this and I am scared of some loophole of a statute of limitation in the state of Ohio. I just contacted lawyers, loosing over 7 teeth from having to be extracted even though I take care of my teeth twice a day flossing and brushing but always waking up with very dry mouth. The pain I have gone through because of suboxone is depressing. Tooth pain is the worst ever. I don't take any other drugs just the suboxone since starting. Even my insurance stopped covering my suboxone and have to pay out of pocket. Its a real mess. Saying because I am not an alcoholic I was not accepted for my insurance to cover my suboxone.

I have been using suboxone since 2015 just started a claim with my lawyers a few months ago. I’m hoping to be compensated enough to cover the cost for oral surgery and implants recommended by my dentists plus for years of pain and suffering. I will keep you guys updated
Plz do! What state are you in!? This all makes sense now! I've spent well over 10,000 out of pocket at my dentist since 2015/16! I couldn't understand why my teeth were just crumbling ( literally ) before my very eyes! And I mean it was mind boggling at rate of speed they were decaying and falling out! It sent me into a depression and a state of self consciousness. I'm in S.C btw--is why I asked where u live! Trying to find out what Carolinas Stat of Lim is!? I'm calling this firm in the morning!
Suboxone is 3.4 PH, that's not a big deal. Most fruits and vegetables are between 3 and 7, but no one is told to hold food in their mouth for 20 minutes, without even chewing, and then told not to eat or drink for an hour. Saliva helps restore normal PH in the mouth. I've been on subs for 7 years and I never hold it in my mouth more than 5 minutes, and I always rinse my mouth with water, eat food, and brush afterwards. If I don't I taste it all day long. Before I took suboxone I had 10 teeth removed, 12 cavities filled, gum disease, receding gums, major tooth sensitivity, but since I started taking suboxone my oral health has actually improved dramatically and currently I have no dental issues at all. "More people who take suboxone have dental issues compared to the general population". They really need to do more research and find out what's going on, and if it really is the suboxone, or could it possibly be the way they tell people to take it?

we just had our hearing before the JPML. Suboxone lawsuits will be consolidated into an MDL over the next 30 days.
Don't forget the Tablet form is taken sublingual.
I used the tablet in the beginning. If anything, I think they are worse than the films. They literally BURNED in my mouth.

I’m only just now learning about this. I have been taking suboxone strips for almost 8 years. I have had sudden tooth decay past few years. Couldn’t figure out why for the life of me because my first 21 years of life I’ve never had a cavity. All of a sudden I’m developing deep cavities and my teeth breaking apart. This explains why. I’ve suffered for years trying to figure this out. Now I have a cause. With all that said is it to late for me to file a claim and how if so??

two year statute of limitations in Texas. Unfortunately, it has been two years since the warning label was changed
Why would a patient take the time to re-read the labels? We've already been on it for years. I think this case should not have a statute, and it should be allowed. No doctor, no pharmacist, nobody has ever warned me about this side effect. I made the connection and Googled. Then only to find out, oh, well, too late by 7 days!

Rather, we need to show a significant difference between records before using Suboxone as compared to the claimant's present condition in order to substantiate the allegation that sublingual suboxone caused a diminution in dental health.
