  • There's that long running meme that FIA means Ferrari International Assistance, but have they ACTUALLY had things changed to suit them because why not? Well, one of those instances could be the 1960 Italian Grand Prix, when the organisers decided to run the whole combined track+oval configuration to allow Ferrari to use the one advantage it had.

    There’s been a collective awe of that combined circuit ghost hanging over every Monza GP race. Being iconised as a lost tradition by Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix helped that myth, even to its contemporaries. Its only recently I’ve realised this misguided 1958 re-construction of 1920s reckless misjudgement was so rarely raced in F1 (1960-62) and the story of a GP circuit that really wasn’t comes out. GP Laps has simulated the 10km layout that made some sense in the 1960s as a sportscar endurance track, where the banking speed is lowered by chicanes with Belisha-like warning lights, but its still something to be just survived. Its totally inappropriate for F1 and its heavy use in the famous movie was more about the ease of James Garner, Phil Hill & Ritchie Ginther shooting real in-car F2 footage at simulated speeds up there, while the 1966 Monza GP weekend burred away untroubled underneath as a thrilling backdrop. The banking creates an unforgettable finale that saved a tortuous film production that magically was shot, edited & released between Monaco & Christmas. For example of how hard a racing film was to make back then McQueen’s more existential Le Mans also began scouting & shooting in 1966, but took 5 years to emerge, almost longer than the Ford-Ferrari war that inspired it.

      I have to admit that movie really did capture the danger and risk of F1 racing in the early days. The story line was typically cheesy but the racing was epic.

    How about when the Italian organizers rearranged the gird layout in 1957, just so that there would be an Italian car in the front row.
    As far as I know, the older grid pattern used at Monza is a 3-2-3 grid layout. But in 1957, the Vanwalls of Stirling Moss, Stewart Lewis-Evans and Tony Brooks (who died a few weeks ago, RIP.) were the fastest cars, locking the grid between the three. So, the organizers changed the grid layout to 4-3-4 to allow Fangio, in the works Maserati 250F to share the front row with them...
    Another fun fact: The car Phil Hill drove to win at Monza in 1960 still exist. It actually won at Monaco a few weeks ago! Driven superbly by Claudia Hurtgen, who is sideways even at the hairpins!

    I tried to climb the Monza banking, but I really do worth my teeth's wellness and acknowledge my lack of balance, so got only midway before desisting. Anyway in order to climb it you'll probably need your hands too

    NASCAR drivers boycotted the first race at Talladega because for the high banking. They had to add cars from different teams as well.

    • @jordanmustang87
      @jordanmustang87 2 роки тому +4

      There were a lot of factors that culminated with that boycott in 1969, mainly shredded tires and safety concerns, along with the construction of the track being completed precariously close to opening weekend. But that's not the end of it, there was also a scoring error, even though there were only 3 cars that ran competitively and the rest of the field were just field fillers from NASCAR's division below the Cup Series. Still considered by many people, even to this day as being the single worst race in NASCAR history without question.

    What surprised me is the banking was 21 degrees when it looks in pictures to be as steep as Talladega. For reference indy is 9 Daytona is 31 and Talladega is 33. I've driven Atlanta in march at 28 degrees and that was steep but it's the transition as a Brit that gets you

      If you saw how bumpy the ride was in that oval....it was worse than anything in modern racing. The Italians made it in pre cast sections and it is on pilings.
