    This whole guard seems like a hip battle, whoever's in control of who's hips is usually in a better control position overall. Great details

      kinda the opposite, he's using hips to counter the fact his opponent hypothetically has upper body/shoulder control and presenting a good solution on how to escape from it, which naturally involves the hips. though yes you're totally correct in a real session it would become a battle. Part of why I personally hate butterfly guard, but still useful for everyone to train in case you find yourself in it or your opponent takes top mount.
