Out of all the Dynasty Warriors games, this is still the best Ma Chao story, since this is really the only time we see most of everything from his perspective, particularly Chengdu (which we can’t access (as the player) at all in DW2, DW3, DW4, DW5, and the ones after Special), even though he doesn’t use his spear, in addition to Pang De missing and the whole thing with him and Wang Yi not being introduced yet. Yea he uses a spear in the PS3 version, but it’s a clone of what other characters use, whereas here, Ma Chao’s sword is completely unique and so, I would say he got “justice” for this game, as a character and personality wise, despite the whole weapon controversy (I like the sword on him btw).
and.. not too mention his overall appearance is gorgeous.. I mean, since DW5, i always hated how Ma Chao looks.. especially hate the helmet, cuz i always look at it as if his hair is sticking out lol.. DW6 Ma Chao's outfit is crazy good.. even in DW7 or Warrior Orochi 3, when an outfit from previous game is available, i always pick ma chao dw6 outfit.. he looks much manlier than the other version..
This was the last time I cared about Ma Chao as a character. Since DW7, his story has grown stale, he's barely used even in battles he had a huge role in. We don't see his perspective from Tong Gate and his duel with Zhang Fei anymore, and this 'rivalry' with Wang Yi is just a desperate attempt to try to shoehorn him into a new role. It's a very one-sided rivalry cuz Ma Chao doesn't seem to give two s** about Wang Yi throughtout. Also, when will Ma Chao get a *REAL* spear moveset instead of taking leftover bullshit from Zhao Yun? -.-

Dw9 was a disaster, Empires might give me hope, but my favourite games are surely the older ones, but the what ifs are by far my favourite because of how they derive from the historical path into a new path that is presented by just one battle or event. The normal story never changes and they characters don't either, do you have a take on that?
Actually, Ma Chao is only good in the game. In the history, he was a face of cruelty in Shu, a true traitor and murderous one with many massacre. Therefore, he will not be treat well again, like in the old days.
I remember that day when my friend recklesly pushing forward to enemy's base, leaving Ma Dai behind.. like srsly all you have to do is to protect Ma Dai and destroy the damn dam

I'll never know how they ported this to PS2. When I played this, it seemed way more advanced than other PS2 games. For a PS2 game, graphics, presentation, and animation is phenomenal.

it's remind me of my childhood when i'm not really hood at english, and it says to destroy the floodgate, i just keep fighting them till it's only ma chao and ma dai, all i felt in this battle is just "anger and grudge" just like the theme music
Especially because Koei just fucking slapped Zhao Yun's moveset onto him in DW7-8. It was shit. WO3 gave him unique charge attacks which is okay. But he needs his own moveset created from scrap.
I like Ma Chao's buster sword. Pity on PS3 he can only use it in Empires. Sure there will always be Guan Ping, but Guan Ping's buster sword looks lame compared to Ma Chao's. :x
They did a port of Dynasty Warriors 6 for the PS2 instead of just doing an XL. Really shows how they screwed up in 2008 when DW6 came out for their first true next-gen game...

How do unlock Ma Chao? I know you have to do battle of Han Zhong and get target 2 but can I do this on free mode or do I have to do this on musou mode? (Ps3)
I believe you can do it on free mode, however this story mode for Ma Chao is only available on the PS2 version of the game. Ma Chao on PS3 version uses a spear and doesn't have a musou mode.

XL is considered an expansion for the base game, while you can play it on it's own, it's severely limited. There are no musou modes in XL, instead there is a new mode called Conquest Mode. To get the full experience you're better off getting both games so you can play the story mode in DW7 with the new movesets added in for DW7XL. If you have to get one or the other only, then get DW7. It has more content by far.
It's completely random. It's based on your internal clock at the time you get a saddle. You can manipulate it somehow by setting your internal clock and playing a specific stage and praying you can get a saddle at the right time but I don't know the exact process. It's a mess, so honestly you shouldn't even bother. Just use another horse.

Somehow Ma Chao got a top 3 spot in Warriors Orochi 3... yes, it's fantasy beyond fantasy without even the most remote connection to actual history.
