  • The SCHENGEN SHUFFLE wouldn't work but a LONG STAY VISA would extend our travel time in France and Italy. Sailing, exploring and sightseeing the Cote d'Azure should not be rushed and we needed boat maintenance time too. Restrictions prevent tourists staying longer than 3 months in the Euro Zone but FRANCE offers a long stay option. The VLS-T isn't impossible to get, but is time consuming. We have included an update on Entry/exit systems and visa regulations for non-EU residents. EES and ETIAS will go live this year and next respectively.

You beat me to the punch! I was just writing up an episode on the very same topic 🙂 FWIW I'm pretty sure you did a far better and more concise presentation than I ever could have. Bravo!

another really great video, thank you. Like you, I’d like to travel through France and then do the med but was a little confused on the 90 days extra and if the French visa process covers other EU countries or if you have to get one for others.

At the moment, I believe it is only France that offers the long stay visa for a tourist. The landscape is changing, so it is worth some research. The France VLS-T is designed and intended for tourists going to France and their consulate is unlikely to approve an application which is for visiting other countries in Schengen - the application process includes a request to provide accommodation and itinerary. France wants you to spend your money in France - which is fair. However, once in France you're in Schengen but the Schengen visa clock of 90 days isn't triggered until you leave France and have your passport stamped entering a different country. The only way (at the moment) that border forces know how long you've officially been in Schengen is by inspecting the in/out stamps in your passport (or interrogating!). Our itinerary was for France, however we did visit Genoa, Elba, Corsica and flew home from Sardinia, having used only 11 days of the extra 90 Schengen visa allocation. Good luck!

Although we did travel home during the 6 month VLS-T period for 6 weeks then returned to France. The visa is multi-entry with a fixed validity period.

Great video and something that would be of interest to us as we are full time travellers. I got a bit confused at the end of the video - so just to clarify lets say we were to do this next year, we would stay in France from 1st Jan all the way to the end of Jun, then do 90 days in a non schegen countries followed by ending the year with 90 days in the schegen......have i got this correct?

Excellent 👍 that’s the way we understand it. First 6 months on the tourist visa and if you leave France for a day getting passport stamped out and then in to another country, then you have another 3 months in France available or other Schengen counties, then another 3 months in any UK accepted passport country that’s not Schengen. Obvs you can switch the non Schengen around in that plan as you’ve suggested. One last thing-always check the latest updates on Gov websites.

Thank you so much for replying so quickly, we greatly appreciate you providing this video with your experiences. We will be looking to apply for this for next year as it will get us 3 extra months in the schegen and we love France so it's ideal. 😊

Do you have to be located at the same address for the entire stay or can you roam freely around France?

Thanks for watching. In the statement which accompanied our application we stated that we lived aboard our boat, which was based at Port Napoleon. If you are land based and touring then you will need to include an itinerary, which you might keep as loose as possible but include destinations you will visit and hotels/camp sites etc.
      Hoping this helps you.
      Stay safe

@@sailingoptions Thank you for the reply, I appreciate your insight. We have just completed our application and are in the process of booking the appointment. Was just a bit concerned as it asked for the address so I just put one where we have already booked a 1 month stay (with free cancellation policy) but just wanted to check to see whether their expectation would be that we will be in one place for the entire six months as our plan is to move about etc but I will try to book as much accommodation as I can and give a guide etc where hopefully this will be enough for them. Fingers crossed. Thanks again
