I'm really hoping for this film to open with Feyd's gladiator fight with the Atreides soldier who has been named Lanville in this adaptation. I believe Villeneuve felt that this scene would serve as a much better introduction to his character than his first appearance in the book canon and that's another reason he had saved Feyd for Part Two.
I think he also delayed Feyd to give Rabban a bit more appearence, who is small character in the book too. I didn't read the book, but if I'm not wrong Rabban doesn't even appear personally in the first half of the story. Edit: I read the comic novel version and I started to read the novel too, there is a chapter where Rabban actually has a long dialogue with the Baron-the 'squeeze Rabban' scene is much longer in the book. But I guess this was Rabban 's only major appearence. The movies reduced Rabban's dialogues in this part very much, however he got other scenes what aren't in the book, to increase his screentime.
Would also be a good time to introduce the Count and Lady Fenring talking the Baron and the Lady Fenring's planned seduction of Feyd. The Bene Gesserit breeding program continues.
@@sectorgovernor As Austin says Rabban is a part of books first part. But not a prominent character. In the adaptation he personifies the cruelty and brutality of the Harkonnen. It's a long time since I read the book, but as I recall it the Baron Harkonnen is more in focus, and you could say fulfills this role in the book.
Children yes, it’s probably my favourite of the books. GE naturally follows in a sense but would be too removed timewise from the first three novels to make any sense film adaption wise
The sound track is a character of its own. Some of the music is face melting, especially when Paul is set to leave for Dune. Also the score as Josh Brolin calls to arm as they are attacked is amazing. Also, for as little screen time as the Rev Mother has, she still domimates the screen (glad they are bringing back the actor who played the role in Part 1)
The chant by the Sardukar priest too. Genuinely spine tingling, especially with a good soundsystem. Like a Tuvan throat singer swallowed a didgeridoo. Hans Zimmer is a mad scientist of sound to which we must all bow down.
I am so excited for Part 2, I've literally been having dreams of watching it in theaters. The one thing I'm looking forward to the most is how they'll do Alia, who is my favourite character in the series
It kinda irks me that Denis apparently doesn't do "director's cuts" and that supposedly there is a ton of cut footage. This movie is visually stunning, but man, they are cutting out way too much IMO. Dune is just too dense a story to do in two movies unless each part is 4 hours or something. I still view the 2000 miniseries as the most faithful to the books so far. Though I will say it's pretty cool that since there is a time jump between book 2 and 3, there will be a RL time jump so Chalamet will visibly look older since is so relatively young and closer to the actual age of Mua'dib
Well Paul Atreides starts at 15, and becomes Emperor at around 18. Timothee was 23 when shooting part 1 three years ago. His age is way off but he fully looks the part. I wonder if they'll do anything to alter his appearance. Slightly different haircut? Facial hair? Blue eyes is my prediction, we'll see a spectrum of change over the course of the movie, with flashbacks and flashforwards being known by eye colour.
I like it that he cut things out because the books are at least 50% redundancies of repeated character descriptions and backstory every time they're reintroduced in a following scene or chapter. Plus Frank, Brian, and Kevin all ramble on chapters at a time with nothing but exposition information dumps that could better be delivered as dialog for other characters or simply show it happening, no need to get into the weeds with every step of the process. Then Frank gets into professor mode quite a bit lecturing us on his personal political beliefs. I like the overall story but the books definitely need editing to improve the pacing and story.
there is a redux version of the orginal dune, 3 hours longs its the best in my opinion,its on youtube, the sci-fi series wasnt dark enough to portray the harkonnens qualities.

I think the moment where Paul realizes and reveals that he and his mother are Harkonnen should have happened in the first part of the movie but was omitted? I'm excited to see if it's included in the second part.
Love your work on Dune especially. There are so many exciting new entries. I love the books but I also love adaptation by Lynch, I know, its odd. But so many epic actors and characters. Villeneuve is very true to what I had in my head when I read the books, and can't wait to see new characters enter the scene. And while Sting was iconic Feyd, the new version of a character seems much more like the one in the books, less bizzare and more thoughtful. Also i want to see navigators. One of the things I alwatys loved is how Lynch made entire visual identity for the guild - their insignia, the way they talk, the way they behave (treathen the Emperor of the known universe that he will spend the rest of his life in the pain amplifier!).

I am so excited for this film! What I am particularly curious about, concerning Part II, is how/who they are going to handle the casting and portrayal of Alia? I would think they may have to increase her age for her interactions with Hera and the Lady Jessica, and even more so at the end with Alia's final two big scenes. This will be particularly difficult I think.
Before part I came out, I had this dream about watchung it. It was for the most part a lot of nonsense, but in my dream there was a scene in whitch the Fremen aproach a dead sandworm that lais on the desert like a stranded whale, and start to colect it's teeth to make crysknifes. Now I kinda whant to see something like that in part 2
More then anything, I hope to see a deeper dive into the Spacing Guild and the Guild Navigators. Such a critical part of the universe but not much talk/hype about it. I know you did a video on this, but I'm a bit worried the movie will gloss over it like they did with the Sardaukar. That Sardaukar scene was the most haunting and fascinating scene but it was so short....I'm worried the guild will get a similar treatment.
I hope they're topless personally... It would be another brilliant way to contrast them. Timothee does not look water fat in the slightest, which is great, and Butler has a lot of bulk. It will give the fight the appearance of higher stakes.
I trust Villeneuve to do a great movie but I'm also worried about a few things. I was underwhelmed by the portrayal of the visionary/spiritual aspect of part 1 so I'm wary of the Jessica initiation scene and the water of life scene. I know the most difficult part to adapt is the inner lives of the characters but I hope he can do it better in part 2. The other thing he needs to do is extended editions for parts 1 and 2. The reportedly deleted scenes are so good they need to be included in an extended edition. After he finishes part 2, and knows what's in or out of each part, he can then start doing this job. I'd buy those blu-rays in a second.
I'd love it to be a similar case to LOTR where the theatricals are released but the extended is what most everyone actually watches even though they're very long. I would gladly watch a 4 hour cut of these Dune movies because the source material is just dense, it needs to be that long.

My two casting predictions: No Count Fenring, and Shishakli morphed into Jamis' widow. 1) I predict Denis V. will have Lady Mago Fenring play both sides, her role for the Bene Gesserit preserving Feyd's DNA, and also the Emperor's assassin and confidant (possibly mistress/consort) who assures Paul's ascension to the throne by defying the Emperor's final command. 2) Announcing the casting of Shisakli, and gender swapping the character, makes me wonder if she will be a combo or several minor characters, including Jamis' widow Harah. I hope I'm right on both predictions!
I'm wondering if they're going to touch on Lady Fenring seducing 15 year old Feyd, myself. That interaction between the Count and the Lady highlights just how much importance the Bene Gesserit place on their genetic breeding program.

Dune is a story meant to teach Americans not to blindly follow their leaders. You must hold them accountable. Please remember most people think that Duke Leto Atreides is a the good guy in this story he is not. He portrays himself as such, but he is just arrogant as the Harkonnens. Duke Leto steals the property of the people of Arrakis and forges signatures to do so and even says that he use morally questionable tactics.
so far, in this new incarnation of Dune has stayed to the book pretty well, the portrayal of Jamis was very good and I kind of liked the Kines character, she played it well also. the character of Paul was good casting and great acting
As a private joke I've often envisioned Shaddam and Count Fenring as Frasier and Niles Crane. However, after much thought, I now feel Tim Roth would be a good choice for the Count in Part 2...we'll see I guess

Florence Pugh she's beautiful i must say, and Christopher Walken as Emperor Shadam, damn! That's like absolutely perfect casting right there! Gonna be really juicy if Denis has Walken's Emperor meeting Stellan's Baron. The guy they've cast as Fayed i don't know anything about and never watched the Elvis movie; personally i would've cast Bill Skarsgard as Fayed, NOT because his dad's in the movie but because he can really do that creep, menacing factor. Overall i just can't wait for this film, loved part1.
Dune Part One was on the whole a phenomenal success. That said, the portrayal of Chani by Zendaya is flat, monochromatic and uninspired. Zendaya appears to have only a single expression, one of pained constipation. It is by far the worst casting in part one. If Villeneuve is going to build part two around Paul's love affair with Chani as he attempts to avoid jihad, it is difficult for me to see how Chani's character will offer a sufficiently strong foundation for that love relationship. Her portrayal was boring in Part One; how can it not be boring in part two?
I am beyond excited for this movie I own a few adaptations of this story like the David lynch movie the two tv series and part one of this epic story and I am going to do a dune marathon before this one and I am going to see it in imax Can’t wait

I really like the scifi miniseries version and always will but I've got to admit this adaptation is much better than I expected given all the changes in sex and ethnicity. It adds another layer of story telling to Dune's story.
Im glad Denis broke this up into 2 parts. There is so much to unpack. I also hope Denis is involved with Messiah thru Chapter House but that is a long time to commit, So many times Hollywood has blown it after the first couple movies of a series of movies.
The casting choices and deviances from the book worked in the first film. Let's see if it paves the way for a gung ho approach to the source material in the second or whether they can stay true to the book.

I just hope when the introduce emperor shadam. Their is an appropriate amount of cow bells in the music. Lol ( Saturday night live Christopher walken sketch) ( i gota have more cow bells) he is the right age and has gravitas but he should be much younger. Many of the cast are actually too old looking. ( spice diet ) ( my father was 73 the day duke leto died yet he looked no more than 30 ) but the age thing same thing happened with game of thrones. 30s something year old characters were played by 40s or 50s something year old actor's. ( or children by young adults)

Well, the hype is real and expected. Walken and Pugh were surprises. The delicate, feminine and intelligent Irulan doesnt fit (for me) with Pugh. Hope for the best, Dennis never dissapointed me. Thanks for the vid. Keep up the good work.

Great video and content, as always! My two casting predictions: No Count Fenring, and Shishakli morphed into Jamis' widow. 1) I predict Denis V. will have Lady Mago Fenring play both sides, her role for the Bene Gesserit preserving Feyd's DNA, and also the Emperor's assassin and confidant (possibly mistress/consort) who assures Paul's ascension to the throne by defying the Emperor's final command. 2) Announcing the casting of Shisakli, and gender swapping the character, makes me wonder if she will be a combo or several minor characters, including Jamis' widow Harah. I hope I'm right on both predictions!
I'm wondering if they're going to touch on Lady Fenring seducing 15 year old Feyd, myself. That interaction between the Count and the Lady highlights just how much importance the Bene Gesserit place on their genetic breeding program.

Dune is a story meant to teach Americans not to blindly follow their leaders. You must hold them accountable. Please remember most people think that Duke Leto Atreides is a the good guy in this story he is not. He portrays himself as such, but he is just arrogant as the Harkonnens. Duke Leto steals the property of the people of Arrakis and forges signatures to do so and even says that he use morally questionable tactics.

so far, in this new incarnation of Dune has stayed to the book pretty well, the portrayal of Jamis was very good and I kind of liked the Kines character, she played it well also. the character of Paul was good casting and great acting
As a private joke I've often envisioned Shaddam and Count Fenring as Frasier and Niles Crane.
However, after much thought, I now feel Tim Roth would be a good choice for the Count in Part 2...we'll see I guess

Florence Pugh she's beautiful i must say, and Christopher Walken as Emperor Shadam, damn! That's like absolutely perfect casting right there! Gonna be really juicy if Denis has Walken's Emperor meeting Stellan's Baron. The guy they've cast as Fayed i don't know anything about and never watched the Elvis movie; personally i would've cast Bill Skarsgard as Fayed, NOT because his dad's in the movie but because he can really do that creep, menacing factor. Overall i just can't wait for this film, loved part1.

Dune Part One was on the whole a phenomenal success. That said, the portrayal of Chani by Zendaya is flat, monochromatic and uninspired. Zendaya appears to have only a single expression, one of pained constipation. It is by far the worst casting in part one. If Villeneuve is going to build part two around Paul's love affair with Chani as he attempts to avoid jihad, it is difficult for me to see how Chani's character will offer a sufficiently strong foundation for that love relationship. Her portrayal was boring in Part One; how can it not be boring in part two?

I really like the scifi miniseries version and always will but I've got to admit this adaptation is much better than I expected given all the changes in sex and ethnicity. It adds another layer
of story telling to Dune's story.
Im glad Denis broke this up into 2 parts. There is so much to unpack. I also hope Denis is involved with Messiah thru Chapter House but that is a long time to commit, So many times Hollywood has blown it after the first couple movies of a series of movies.

The casting choices and deviances from the book worked in the first film. Let's see if it paves the way for a gung ho approach to the source material in the second or whether they can stay true to the book.

I just hope when the introduce emperor shadam. Their is an appropriate amount of cow bells in the music. Lol ( Saturday night live Christopher walken sketch) ( i gota have more cow bells) he is the right age and has gravitas but he should be much younger. Many of the cast are actually too old looking. ( spice diet ) ( my father was 73 the day duke leto died yet he looked no more than 30 ) but the age thing same thing happened with game of thrones. 30s something year old characters were played by 40s or 50s something year old actor's. ( or children by young adults)
Really looking forward to this, & almost nothing else, as most of Hollywood has become a garbage fire. Denis is the right director to adapt the greatest sci-fi of all time.
