In the latest episode of Up Close, our associate curator Sarah Loyer discusses David Hammons’s great artwork, African-American Flag (1990)-an artwork that takes on the complex topic of American identity and ideals. Loyer explains the symbolism within this work, including what influential civil rights leader and writer W.E.B. Du Bois described as the “two-ness" of being both American and Black.
