You aren't really supposed to call them the Sioux anymore. Sioux is the name the Cree generally gave them, which, like most names Amerindian groups gave each other, means 'enemy.' They call themselves the Lakota or Dakota. The term Sioux is still used in place names like Sioux Lookout (a town in the Province of Ontario, in Canada), a partial translation of the Cree name for a place that watch was kept for Lakota war parties raiding Cree territory.
You got some of it right and some it wrong. It was the Ojibwe and the French, not the Cree, that called them “Sioux”. It comes the Ojibwe word “nadouessioux” meaning “little snake”. The French shorten it to “Sioux”. The collective term for the All of the Sioux is Oceti Sakowin meaning “The Seven council Fire”. They do like to be called Lakota, Dakota, and Nakoda. Those are the three dialects of there Languages. The famous one being Lakota. They also have types clans or bands for example like: Oglala, Hunkpapa, Sisseton, and others.
I saw this thing in San Antonio way back in the 70's no one believed me about how enormous this thing was. I'd say its wing span was 20 ft across.-- and I am not exaggerating
Im a Filipino from Philippines 🇵🇭 Yes, when the Thunderbird flaps it's mighty wings it produces the terrible sound of thunder ⚡ while it's yellow eyes glow cause the flashing of lightning
I have actually seen a Thunder Bird, 8 of them, in fact. Every couple of years, they would come to visit us in the lonely desert city that we called home. There, they would put on a beautiful aerial display, and then fly off into the sunset, not to be seen again, for 2 to 3 years. Thanks GDN, keep up the good work.
I think I may have spotted this mythical bird early this morning! Haha, no kidding..this is the second time I have seen this ENORMOUS black(with a bright red head) majestic bird, I have never observed a bird like this, and I'm surrounded by huge trees and thousands of birds that return to my yard every spring..but This guy..bigger, and wider wing span than I've ever seen and I have NEVER witnessed a bird fly higher or glide more elegantly than this seriously mythical looking bird. Took my breath away both times...I've been searching the internet to find out what in the world breed of sky ruler this might be and one that comes very near identical is the Californian condor? But they are very rare and I live in Eastern Canada so...I dunno, but thanks for the legends and helping to make this a very mystical encounter!
@@omxosxw I'm in Quebec. This was last summer that I wrote this comment i had three more sightings last summer. Nobody believed me at first, but on two occasions I had a bunch of people with me so I got vindicated. Hope he comes by again this summer
I liked your video it was both informative and entertaining. Also, I bought a Thunderbird necklace which is absolutely beautiful to me. It is made of sterling silver. The design is a runed crescent moon with a Thunderbird upon it. Thank you for making this video, I liked it.
I believe you once mentioned that live in in the region that was called Transylvania ( a vampire counts video if I'm not mistaken). So as someone who is not use to hearing about native american mythology. How dose our mythology compare to yours? Sorry if this is poorly worded question, just got off a sixteen hour shift.
Well, old Romanian mythology, if you can call it that, kinda revolves around village life, traditions and superstitions. There's some mythological creatures in our folklore but they are heavily influenced by other sources, like the Varcolac (werewolf), Strigoi (ghosts) or Bau-Bau (the boogyman).
What about the version where Thunderbird was a man who fell in love with the Moon and she loved him back? Being unable to touch her for the distance between them, he decided to go get his love only to face the wrath of the Great Spirit. They battled fiercely, earning the Great Spirits respect. Having defeated the young lover, he transformed Thunderbird into a great and mighty bird.
That's a beautiful, yet tragic story. Thank you for mentioning it. I wonder if his being turned into a Thunderbird meant that he could be with his love in a certain way since he could soar across the sky?
Anybody wanna see a GIANT THUNDERBIRD ? Have a look at the Crosby Grace Travel Guide for 1st timers to Yosemite National Park... look closely it’s right at the beginning... talk about 20 foot wingspan ?
The Thunderbird name derives , when Red Indians would see huge birds gliding on the thermals created by. Thunder Storms. The birds prolific propensity for grabbing humans, was well known, amongst Indian Tribes. In those days there were far less people on the plains, so subsequently only a few, would go missing each year !
Shape shifter angelic thought forms, seraphim that some call dragons. I have met these energies working in the death mounds. We do tradition to renew the land and keep the balance. We call it different things in different cultures. All are ancestors. As we wake the earth we balance the earth
Considering that there is still alot of unexplored places on earth I wouldn't be surprised if such a creature did exist and native American mythology seems to be the only one that really has any truth to it i would love to see a thunderbird tbh and as someone who loves avian creature and someone who belongs to the element of air i hope thunderbirds are real
In a simpler explanation: Those people who were destroyed by Thunderbirds, they had fear had and lack of integrity. - What happens when you give into fear?
These giant birds rarely show themselves during daylight hours cos they know hunters will take potshots at them, instead they hide amongst the foliage, where they roost, ideally overlooking a trail, so they can keep their beedy little eyes trained, just in case anything completely unsuspecting comes their way, so they can pounce on it. Be it pig, deer, wolf or their favourite delicacy......Humans. In fact, the only time most people will see a Thunderbird, is when it’s too late ?
They have a long history, even still today. The Thunderbird was a huge scavenger Condor like bird that flew over the North American plain a few hundred years ago. Wingspan over 15ft, some say 20ft. As scavengers, they feasted on the rotting corpses of Buffalo. After a major lighting storm a very tiny minority of the millions of buffalo would die. Lighting ground strikes would take a few buffalo out. That's why they are called Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds would gather after a storm. They were know to exist, however they began to disappear when their major food source began to disappear the buffalo.
Such was the mystic surrounding these magnificent creatures, that their legend adorns every Totem Pole.....How ever, fast forward to the 21st century......27,000 missing people in National Parks.......?........ OK so Bigfoot and ufos do take a few, Bears, Wolves, Mountain Lions and other people, kill some, but the sheer majority ? What I think is going on is a population explosion of these predators caused primarily by the influx of vast numbers of visitors to the Parks System ?
Native americans don't get the regonition they deserve, the made so many fascinating creatures. Americans don't mention that they made the wendigo, they play it off as an american invented the wendigo
@@GrimDarkNarrator Yeah, but fun fact the native americans don't have an official mythology. There's choctaw mythology but they are only creatures too. No creator or creation myth. Did the Thunderbirds you saw looked like big giant ravens?
A lot of people wouldn’t believe you but I do
When I was 16 Me and my friend saw a Big Giant orangey red bird fly across the sky at 10pm. It was amazing and made me a believer.
