Great Memories, I was blessed to graduate from U of L in 1986...didn't see all of the games (didn't own a vcr) . The night we won the tournament, the campus was so joyous, no violence, just joy, young, stupid joy. The university president cancelled classes the next day.
@Sub for Trump 2020 Actually he would have been a senior the previous year my man ('84-'85)! Barkley was a junior when he declared after the '83-'84 season! I do believe though, that with him, Auburn would have been much better in '85 and they still made the Sweet 16 despite and nearly beat Carolina!
@Sub if you are against Antifa and BLM the final of this game was 84-76 Louisville! The year before Carolina eliminated Auburn 62-56 before being upset in the Elite 8 by eventual national champion Villanova! Barkley's last game Auburn was eliminated in the preliminary rounds (as they were still referred to) by perennial Goliath beater Richmond ('84)
@Sub if you are against Antifa and BLM Chuck Person, Frank Ford and Jeff Moore were the experienced vets for Auburn in '86! But Person was the only senior! Chris Morris was a sophomore! In '87 with Moore, Ford and Morris Auburn made the second round and lost to eventual national champion Indiana! So they lost consecutive years to the team that ended up winning it! Then in '88 they were eliminated by eventual runner-up Oklahoma!
We talked about this game as 7th graders in PE class. One year removed from Charles Barkley the Round Mound of rebound. They could have used him but Louisville was the team of '86. Louisville beat another SEC team, LSU in the National Semifinals and then Duke to win it all in Dallas. This was the last year without a 3pt shot.
Irony: Kenny Payne faced Auburn as a freshman in the Tigers’ first Elite 8, and as an assistant saw them in Kentucky’s Elite 8 defeat in overtime to Auburn 33 years later.
Ill go out on a limb and say that if you played for Louisville, North Carolina, Georgetown, St. Johns. Georgia Tech, Indiana, Syracuse, UCLA, Houston, Kansas. Oklahoma Villeneuve in the mid 80's. You had game.
It's ironic that with Barkley, Auburn couldn't get out of the preliminary round (in those days before the expansion of the field) and yet made the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in consecutive years after he'd left! Better team chemistry almost always produces better results and those '85 and '86 Auburn teams we're a prime example
If ma uncle milt wud hav left his softmore yr he wud hav Ben a top ten pick. He was putn up 21pts a game freshman and softmore yr but jr yr got hurt but still won in highskool, college, and wit the lakers. 3rings on all levels #facts look it up and his son dajuan wagner won a state championship leaded Memphis fr all time scoring 762pts and was 1st round 6pick for the cav, b4 LBJ but got hurt agv 19pts as a rookie!!! Can't believe nobody responded to your post after Auburn took down the three winningest programs in NCAA Div I history to accomplish their long awaited overdue dream in 2019! I truly loved when they took out the Tar Holes and then Kentucky! Bruce Pearl has done quite a job with the Tigers

Louisville was fantastic
Key late switch to 2-12 zone, Ellison blocking shots, and great clutch free throws.
Auburn was a dangerous team that year with Person and Morris.

If Barkley didnt go pro early hes on this Auburn team. Scary
Actually he would not have been on this Auburn team! He would have been a senior in '84-'85 (declared as a junior after the '83-'84 season)

And I believe they could have made another few games run had this years' Dance not been cancelled
