Invito a todas a cantar conmigo!

Cantar ahora
Yo te llamo música
por no decirte Dios
Cuanta cosa estúpida
desaparece con vos
Siempre has sido un cántaro
donde he ido a beber
y aunque ha sido un bálsamo
hoy dejé de creer
No quiero ni cantar
pero no sé hacer más
No llegó la primavera
Le perdí la fe
a mi religión
que el destino puso a prueba
Un olor a plástico
que alguien puso a quemar
Ya no hay ruido a tráfico,
las sirenas suenan
Con un golpe drástico
estoy mirando un final
Nueva York dramático,
volveré a rezar
No quiero componer
ni cantar Sol-Do
Que difícil esta hora
Pero es mi deber,
así como ayer,
tengo que cantar ahora
El mundo de ayer
ya no existe más
Qué difícil esta hora
Es nuestro deber,
así como ayer,
tenemos que cantar ahora
ENGLISH
Cantar Ahora is a song I wrote in New York City in March 2020 during a historic moment when the city was the epicenter of contagion and deaths from you-know-what.
From my window, not a soul could be seen. The noise of traffic had been replaced by howling of ambulance sirens though empty streets. The contrast was more obvious for me since I live near a hospital.
Daniel Giovenco has a song that begs: “Guitar, healer of everything, save me from this one, save me from this one…”
In the face of tragedy, and as so many times before, I went to music to be saved, to be helped, to be redeemed. However, the feeling of loss was so immeasurable and overwhelming that I doubted for a moment of the power of song and of the singer’s duty.
This song is like a photography of those weird moments that forewarned an apocalypse to come.
We recorded it on-line on the platform BandLab. I asked for technical and musical help from Martín Fuks from Brooklyn New York. I invited my comadre KBsonia, excellent songwriter and singer from San Juan, Argentina who recorded voice. I was also able to include the contribution of Goku Illanes also from San Juan playing bandoneon with heartfelt exquisitely-selected notes.
I worked on an English translation with the help of talented poet Harriet Chappel master of the rhyme, which I include here.
I invite everyone to sing along!
Ruben Gonzalez
I now call your name music
So not to call you god
So much of what is stupid
Will now with you depart
You have always been a fountain
Where I have gone to drink
Even though you a balm have been
I have stopped believing
I don’t want to even sing
But that is all I know
It didn’t even come the spring
And now it will not go
So what I lost was faith
In my religion
That is now tried by fate
Not by opinion
The smell of plastic
That someone is burning
There is no noise of traffic
Only sirens wailing
With a drastic blow
I am witnessing the end
New York’s dramatic so
I’ll go and pray again
I do not want to write
Not even to sing So-Do
It is such a tough hour
Don’t feel that higher power
Before my duty I must bow
oh just like yesterday
And yes I have got to sing now
There is no other way
The world of yesterday is gone
It is such a tough hour
But it’s our duty to go on
Singing louder and louder
Excelente canción! Y que linda la voz femenina.
