Fantastic player. He had a streety sort of aura,I played touch with him a few times and was impressed by how easily he mingled with us. He had a massive heart for people. Rip you legend !
Great video featuring one of the greatest players. As a boy Danie Gerber was my first favourite and after he retired James Small became my favourite. I was so happy when he broke the try scoring record for the Springboks.
@@christophersolomon633 It’s all debatable and up to opinion in the end but I do think that the Springboks were the most formidable team ever in that period.
I agree I too watch old south african matches and see the stark difference in playing style they were physical but boy with snyman at centre they could run lines and offload well.
In loving memory of Greenside High School's own Springbok Rugby hero. What a fighter! I used to live in the same suburb as him, friendly, down to Earth. James you will be sorely missed.
Great player. He would have held his own today with that pace. But, some of those tries were sketchy at best. Haha. RIP a great player. Amazing to see him and Joost in so many of these scenes. Even R. Kruger. Wow, we've lost some greats. recently.
RIP James what a great player was fortunate enough to meet and talk to James for a few minutes in Melbourne in 1994.Natal played Victoria and my brother 1st 5 8th for Victoria
Hearing all those players names again took me back many years. I was so sad when Small left Transvaal to play for Natal. That first play was between my two favorite teams, Blue Bulls and Transvaal. I am a Joburg boy who went to boarding school in Northern Transvaal and played rugby up there in primary school instead of football like most English schools.
Remember sitting in the scholars section at Kings Park and James had a barney with an EP player after scoring (if I remember correctly). Him on one wing and Kobous vd westhuizen on the other. Good old days
My greatest memory of James was when he tackled the late Jonah Lomu and the bokke helped him bring him down .Team work at it's best moment in time R.I.P JAMES SMALL
Nah Jonah was shit and I'm kiwi too defensive blunder always shooting out of the line creating an overlap for the attacking team highball nightmare how many times did we see him drop a bomb dangerous ball in hand for sure but never scored against the boks
Onepeople Carlin please don’t judge on what you hear in tabloids, my father is not a racist and he never has been, misunderstanding leads to terrible assumptions
Tactical, intelligent and hugely entertaining Springbok rugby....WTF happened? When did we adopt this endless kicking, crash ball, bash the offense with "our pack" mind numbing, dumb rugby game?

I love your channel Peter!
@@RealRugby thank you so much. I love your channel too. I have spent many hours enjoying your content!
Some of these clips got real good moves, great support runs and backline play, not what Springbok Rugby looks like today.
RIP James Small! The Springboks before the handover of South Africa were the most formidable rugby team ever!
No. Very good but not as good as the greatest All Black's side
@@christophersolomon633 It’s all debatable and up to opinion in the end but I do think that the Springboks were the most formidable team ever in that period.
Somehow the older rugby seemed far better than what it is today,
Players smaller and not as fit
Defence not nearly as well organised
Refs willing to let the game run
No TMO sticking their noses is very 5 minutes
Rules were different as well
as a kiwi he was first bok I really enjoyed watching...
fast ,strong tenacious!and competitive..
Back when the Boks still played "off-load" rugby, and not "win the contact" or "kicking game" rugby
RIP James, you will always be a legend!
Been watching all the old boks games, totally agree, their entire game was running, off loading rugby. Miss that, regardless of our RWC2019 win
Play to your strengths. The purpose is to win not to entertain. If you want entairrainmemt go watch club rugby.
@alexander usyk You seem to be lacking some form of education. You should not be on the internet
I agree I too watch old south african matches and see the stark difference in playing style they were physical but boy with snyman at centre they could run lines and offload well.
RIP James, had good fortune to meet him on the rugby field at Greeside High (vs Bryanston High)in 1986, was a fan ever since.
He was MY HERO when i grew up and he will always stay MY HERO. No person will ever replace my hero.
Amazing that you have all this footage. James was one of my favourite players so thank you very much.
In loving memory of Greenside High School's own Springbok Rugby hero. What a fighter! I used to live in the same suburb as him, friendly, down to Earth. James you will be sorely missed.
I went to Roosevelt High. We were big rivals with Greenside.
@@steventheron1165 Yes I remember Rooseveldt High. I think our deputy headmaster Mr. Chrighton ended up as headmaster at Rooseveldt.
Lived live to the fullest. Great winger, respect. RIP
My friend James. Great fun great times shared. Deeply saddened. RIP.
What a legend. Thank you for the amasing memories. RIP James Small
That Montgomery / Small try at 34:40 is incredible!
Watching this and other videos the boks used to have some awesome players and slick moves! What the hell has happened since 2013 they are just dire
That WP team was gold!

What a pace, what a smile... sadly missed.
@sandman many
@sandman sure: not me, though... I was there just for few months, a couple of times.
RIP James. Thanks for the memories.
Rest In Peace James. You lived a great legacy, and everybody will remember you in the best of ways.
I miss Hugh Bladen's commentary!
Those Afrikaans commentary is real kak though. Afrikaner nationalism really paved way for any doos to make a living in this country
Rip james. Loved watching you mate.
What a legend👍👍👍👍
What a legend from my younger days. RIP big man...
Remember sitting in the scholars section at Kings Park and James had a barney with an EP player after scoring (if I remember correctly). Him on one wing and Kobous vd westhuizen on the other. Good old days
'Barney' definitely of the same generation mate, haven't heard that word for some time
Jrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,oh James. RIP Bro.
JAMES SMALL THE MAN THAT BROUGHT THE MIGHTY ALL BLACK JOMO LOMU DOWN TO EARTH !!!
South Africa have just the same quality wingers now, they're just not unleashed enough - but when they are.... World Champions
i’m the proudest daughter in the world
And so you should be Ruby! Your dad was a legend and a true Springbok great. Send him our regards.
Real Rugby of course!!
Ruby You legend
What a competitor he was.
Ruby, I am so sorry about your great loss, My deepest condolences to you! Your Daddy was my hero too, as rugby spectator. Rest in Peace James.
RIP James. Gone way too soon.
RIP James was a childhood hero!
R.I.P you were 1 of the greats
Rest in Peace, Jamesy :(
Just astonishing how many of these old tries would be cancelled by a modern TMO
RIP James, jou yster
My greatest memory of James was when he tackled the late Jonah Lomu and the bokke helped him bring him down .Team work at it's best moment in time R.I.P JAMES SMALL
How many times did Andre Joubert put him over the line...
Absolute hero. tried to emulate him at school. could have been a Bok if not for a lack of talent!
What a legend. RIP
Just heard the sad news Rest In Peace James small .
He was a great rugby plauer.
Top Cass Player. RIP.
He was real. Respect!
RIP James.
7:04 his foot was out twice lol but definitely a great bok
"And James Small made no mistake". WTF?!?!
One thing to say R.I.P James small
Rugby is life when your into it
James small
Used to like him back then.
R.I.P. James Small
RIP James..
Im a kiwi -and this guy would have made any All Black side. Tough, fast and brave. No Jonah though..
Tutai Pane Agreed, he was no Jonah, but he did match Jonah in the 1995 final. He was a great player
Nah Jonah was shit and I'm kiwi too defensive blunder always shooting out of the line creating an overlap for the attacking team highball nightmare how many times did we see him drop a bomb dangerous ball in hand for sure but never scored against the boks
I remember the Lions games with him. Jonathan Bentley matched and bettered him, which he didn't like at all.
RIP James Small
Retired to early best winger SA ever had
Not even fucking close!! He was a racist little prick and I would have to say that 'coloured' Bryan Habana far exceeded this bafoon.
What's the colour of the guys skin guy got to do with it ?
Habanna never had to deal with lomu
He wasn't even the best winger in his own provincial side...
there is only one country that will cheat a world cup to win the trophy and that is nz when the world cup was held in your pathetic country.
Onepeople Carlin please don’t judge on what you hear in tabloids, my father is not a racist and he never has been, misunderstanding leads to terrible assumptions
Every fullback that he played with became a Bok... Definitely a bid, sad loss for SA! RIP James Small- taken so young.
Ai hoender vleis mooi. Goeie ou dae
Schalk Brits today, reminds me a lot of Jame Small.
r.i.p legend
A video francois pienaar
He was a little crazy but a tough rugby player.
Only 84kg!? Nan how rugby has changed!
News headlines during 95 WC, Big Lomu has a Small problem.
RIP
Wonder what Chester Williams thinks of him?
Aggressive not dirty
One mans opinion,
He didn't win a World Cup and score loads of try's
Being a pork chop.
RIP, Iron Man.
When Bad Boys Ruled the World
Tactical, intelligent and hugely entertaining Springbok rugby....WTF happened? When did we adopt this endless kicking, crash ball, bash the offense with "our pack" mind numbing, dumb rugby game?
Jonath- fully agree with you- dumb rugby style now
This was the dude, who tried to
Leg trip Cullen.....!!!
After the AB's beat Sth Africa....
SORRY JONAH LOMO
Fokket ek mis rugby
Allot of bad calls on non tries lol.
What a rotter of a man, what a wonderful player. On balance I suppose.
I suppose you only knew him as a player and not as friend or acquaintance, seems unfair to judge him on what a tabloid tells you?
A wonderful team player was James Small
@@rubysmall5002 Chester Williams regularly suffered racial abuse from him. We smoking that James Small pack now. RIP bozo
Very good Winger.. shame he was such a dirty player.
Jared Russell not dirty, aggressive and resourceful
Jared Go to the fucking Oprah Winfrey Show buddy
Jarred- not agrisive- just hardy/strong/ commitment
I didn't like him.If the tryline is open thats the only time he can score a try.
RIP
