    As low quality this video is, it’s very important to me. This was one of the very first videos that I ever learned about Big Ben and now it’s my life long dream to visit London and tour the whole tower.

    I'm pretty sure the Tower was mostly undamaged during the Blitz, as the clock ran bang on time during it all.
    If you go into the House of Commons you can see bomb damage on the archway which leads to the Commons chamber, which the Members told not to repair to act as a reminder.

    Smaller bells can be swung, as you may have observed in church towers. However a bell of this size cannot. The force generated by a bell of this size swinging "left to right" would cause the tower to sway considerably and probably result in its collapse. Large bells such as this, or Great George in Liverpool are fixed in place and struck by a hammer. Bells used to play tunes (such as you hear on the quarter hour) are also fixed and not swung. This is a very old practice, you aren't "behind."

    • @lillylouise5353
      @lillylouise5353 7 років тому

      Christopher Weber great George Liverpool is rung by the clapper as at sailsbury the tower is week to have the bells that are small to be swingable. It won't be the force but the force of of the swinging and clapper could make the thing crack or as the tower it's hung in is leaning and has beneath it work going on As the Elizabeth tower beg Ben is hung in is a clock tower as if u think of the bolts being undone it could Pound its way to the bottom causing the floor beneath it to give sag and the structure to collapse the bell is supposedly the same weight as an element

      Large bells swung have huge trussed bell frames (wood or metal)

    It's very fortunate that "Jerry" didn't destroy Big Ben during the Blitz. What a beautiful landmark and a wonderful-sounding bell!
    Unfortunately, the famous bell in the city I live near cracked in the 19th century and will never be heard again.
    The U.S. National Park Service recently roped off the area around the Liberty Bell and you can no longer walk up and touch it.

    Hi,
    You can take pics at certain areas, but always ask the tour guide first, as for ear plugs, I don't think you do, plus its not often you'll be able to experience the noise that close, so don't spoil it! ;o)
    Hope you enjoy it.

    No, they don't allow any photos or filming of the actual machine, but you can find pictures of it around the web.
    Its a massive this, loads of huge cogs, and the funniest this is the old 1 penny coins that are used to balace the pendulum.

    If you was under it then I can understand, but if there was really a danger, they would force you to use them.
    Most of the sound vibrations ring down through the town, as its actually hollow through the middle, so I'm sure helps.

    Why does the striking mechanism take a break of about 10 seconds between the last quarter tone and the hour chimes? Does anybody know what happens inside the clockwork during that period? Is there a time guard (or what is he called?) looking after the hour chiming mechanism by holding the fly fans to make sure that the first hour chime refers exactly with a radio controlled clock display on 12:00:00 h? Or what is it like?
    By the way: I already know the story about the coins on the pendulum weight.

    • @oliviaalwen2142
      @oliviaalwen2142 7 років тому

      there called a clock keeper & it has takes a brake so ppl can check the time + the fans posably flck quicky so it would be not safe to hold em as i saw a video one time were they flicked pritty quick but beets me i havent an idea if im correct

    • @CurtisLittlechild92

      Dirk1961 I was thinking maybe to limit the vibration, on the bell frame. But I don't know.

    • @luke8452
      @luke8452 6 років тому

      There is no real reason. When the quarter chimes end, the chiming train stops and few seconds later the striking train starts, and the hammer hits Big Ben exactly on the hour.

    Christopher Weber, the largest bell in Britain, which weighs 16 tons, is actually a swinging bell (there's a video of it on UA-cam). Plus Great George, the bell you mentioned does, in fact, have a clapper inside of it. So I don't think the fact that the bells are in a fixed position and struck on the outside by hammers has anything to do with how much the bells weigh.

    • @lillylouise5353
