    I use the ratio conversion kit to run a 12 speed cassette and derailleur with my sram force road shifters. No complaints yet.

    1x drivetrains have both advantages and disadvantages. A 2x (or 3x) drivetrain is significantly more efficient ~1.5% due to a straighter chainline. A 1x drivetrain is typically about ~ 0.5lb/0.25kg than a multi chainring drivetrain (cheap wide range cassettes are heavy but so are steel chainrings). The weight gain is significantly outweighed by the drivetrain efficiency under virtually all conditions other than walking. You also tend to be able to get tighter steps between the gears. Tighter steps between the gears is often underestimated as most riders spend the vast majority of the time somewhere in the middle of their gear spread. Often one gear is too hard and the other is too easy. Yes riders can spin faster than they want or mash a bigger gear but it's fatiguing. Using a higher/lower cadence is doable for a 1-3 hour ride when you can take it easy the day after. On multi day bike trips with long days in the saddle that fatigue adds up. Some trips you might find yourself on steeper or flatter terrain than others. You might want to use the same bike for both unloaded day rides as well as loaded up with gear. Unloaded play sessions at a particular destination on a bikepacking trip as well as unloaded day rides when not on a bikepacking trip. Being able to use the same bike for a larger variety of applications is an advantage. 1x drivetrains have came a long way from what DH (and slalom) mtb racers used in the 1990's but they still have some minuses to a multi chainring setup.

    Alfine 11 + Gates belt is a very affordable low maintenance and reliable alternative to 1x chain. Perfect for super wet or muddy work, and not having to worry about the chain leaves a TON of extra time for exploring. That plus the pure silence of pedaling along in nature is something that needs to be experienced to fully appreciate. I don't think I'll ever go back to a chain drive again, at least not for bikepacking. One other small benefit is the ability to instantly shift 3-4 gears without pedaling, nice for very tight trails where you might need substantial gear changes, but don't have the space (or proper incline) to do so

      Very true! The only negative is you need a split seat stay to install one.

    IDK if this is the place I can ask this question but, I'm going to. I've always had my heart set on a 3x10 setup but, all the vids i see for older retro bikes (Bikes from the 90's mainly) are all on 1x10 conversions it seems. Do you know of or have a vid on a 3x10 conversion?

    For Kate about no fork crown mount for generator light. I have a plate above the fork. my bike shop installed it to mount a light to instead of the fork crown. It's listed as "Provisions Unlimited Light Plate" on my parts list.

      Thanks! This is really helpful. Looks like Provisions Unlimited makes custom plates for a lot of different industries from the 4x4 crowd to audio engineers.     I can't believe you didn't talk about pinion gearbox and Rohloff gearhubs. Both of these are great for bike packing and the Rohloff can be fitted to any bike. I'm planing on getting a custom built bike and go with one of those with a gates carbon belt drive.

      Definitely a miss opportunity in this video not talking about Internally geared hubs and the Pinion. I’m going to convert my Wolverine into a belt driven bike at some point. Probably go with a Rohloff.

      @@GreatEgretAdventure I just find that a lot of people still know very little about these options. Seems like whenever you find a video on them, they only talk about the shifter or just say how low mantaince they are. I wish more people would talk about how they feel out on the trails. My plan is to have a custom built titanium hardtail built up with a Rohloff gearhub and gates carbon belt drive for trail riding and bike camping.

      @@GreatEgretAdventure will do. I will say that both gearboxs have a different feel to them and in different gears.
      I'm looking forward to your next video on bike packing. I want to learn more about bags since my plan is to run a rear rack and a frame bag.

    If i only got 500 hours out of that futureshock, I'd replace it and sell my bike😂 Even 1000hrs would possibly push me to sell. I have a lot more than 500hrs on my lauf fork and probably 800hrs on a redshift stem on a different bike. Both work as well as when new. Took the rubber bits out of my stem to examine them and they look great

      This is widely true, but not necessarily. Depends on the rider and the terrain. At Unbound Gravel Ian Boswell used a 1x on his Specialized Diverge. Larens ten Dam had the same diverge. He was using a 2x. Boswell finished 1st and ten Dam second. It depends on the rider, but typically: 2x to maintain cadence. 1x when there are a lot of quick changes in speed and terrain.

      I've been running a 2x on my Mtb for years and find it better then a 1x. I just like to use 1-3 gears at most and for steeps I just drop right into the granny gear. I didn't like the 1x systems since I found myself needed to change a bunch of gears for steep sections.

    Best bikepacking drivetrain? Pinion gear box with the Gates carbon drive? Zero maintenance.

      You can't go wrong with a Pinion and Gates. I'm build a Gates belt drive bike now, but someday I'd love to have a frame with a Pinion.

      I appreciate the feedback, but can you be more constructive with it? It’s an 11-minute video. What exactly is so terrible? What clips? Is the color grading bad? Do the subject of the clips not flow with the content? Is it possible you don’t have it set to 4K (lower right corner)? I’m a video editor by trade. This is an old video, but I always want to improve.
