  • In this video, I outline the impact TikTok has had on Charlie Puth's career, his journey so far and the factors that have helped him succeed within an oversaturated music industry.
    I am currently building out this channel and would love to hear what videos you'd like to see next in the comments!

    Charlie is really creative and talented but its kinda sad that his best works are underrated so people tend to underrestimate his ability and call him "mid" or "tiktok singer"

    His understanding of harmony is great, that + perfect pitch allows him makes sonically pleasing music

    • @fromchomleystreet
      @fromchomleystreet 11 місяців тому

      Perfect pitch has no bearing whatsoever on one’s ability to compose music. Knowing what a note is called when you hear it without a reference doesn’t help you to know how to use the note musically. Music is all about the relative intervals BETWEEN notes, not the particular frequencies of notes. Sometimes both abilities happen to co-exist in the same person, but there’s no particular reason they should. It’s entirely possible to have perfect pitch and be a terrible musician.

    • @Kadenxe
      @Kadenxe 11 місяців тому

      @@fromchomleystreet you don't think it at least enhances his ability to learn music theory concepts? For example voicing complex chords

    • @fromchomleystreet
      @fromchomleystreet 11 місяців тому

      @@Kadenxe I honestly don’t see how. He could probably tell you the names of the notes in one more easily than others, if you played it for him without a reference. But musicality is all about RELATIVE pitch, not absolute pitch. That’s why a piece of music is still the same piece of music even if you transpose it into a new key that shares not a single note with the original key. The specific frequencies of the notes, or what they’re named, is simply not relevant. It’s the intervals that matter, and anyone with a good sense of relative pitch can understand those.
      As for voicing complex chords… There aren’t any particularly complex chords in any of Charlie Puth’s music, or at least not his commercially released music (he studied jazz, so is probably capable of more harmonic complexity than he typically employs in his pop music). His commercial pop songs are extremely simple, harmonically. Simple doesn’t equal “bad”, but the degree of difficulty in it is very low. Far, far more harmonically sophisticated music has been made by thousands of musicians who couldn’t tell you the name of a random note that you played for them in isolation.

    Keep putting a lot of effort and thoughtfulness into your videos and you will grow organically. I do think Charlie also sees himself as a teacher, and a bit of an evangelist for music theory/production/the availability of music all around each of us. He definitely sees the need to integrate the arts into our lives on a regular basis, from morning until night.

    Really well done! Subscribed. He's right. People are interested in what's behind the music. Watched his video you referenced here from Rolling Stones' Levels series, "See Charlie Puth Break Down Emotional Hit Song, "Attention"" previously and that propelled me to learn to play the piano, and I bought a newer, more sophisticated version of the keyboard he was using. Came here after watching Charlie covering Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” Live on the Stern Show. :) Looking forward to watching more of your videos. 👍🎼🎵🎶

      @@highnoteproductionsofficial Hope you'll be able to create more of these videos. Really enjoyed this one.
      As an aside to my remarks above mentioning Bonnie Raitt, I grew up in Santa Ana, CA on Raitt St. named after Bonnie's father John Raitt, a big musical star. So I was reading more about Bonnie yesterday and listening to some of her music, and reflecting on her career. I heard her in concert before with Jackson Browne here in Santa Barbara, where I live . He lives in this area too. They're close friends. They just killed it. And then last night I was watching the Grammy Awards and shockingly to most people Bonnie won Record of the Year for a song most people had never heard. I guess though it's for the writing of the song, not necessarily its popularity. Bonnie's a wonderful person. Loved by many. So happy to see she won. Thanks again for your video. 👍🎵🎼

      just cause the process is shared on tiktok it doesn't mean it's "made for tiktok" though. the songs that are made for tiktok would be the type of songs that have small catchy part that can go viral as an audio trend; while rest of the song is poorly made. and charlies songs are amazing as whole.
