Josh. As a 56 year old fella. You are a true inspiration. Thank you for all you posts over the years. You have pushed me to get out there and bikepack these routes. My bike has been my saviour after losing my wife to cancer 18mths ago. I wish you the very best mate, and a full recovery. Love.

No matter how many times you watch the video, it's still tough to watch. Crazy how we live by fine margins. Such a simple choice as left or right can make all the difference.
I'm glad to see you're recovering mate.

Don't you think that looking at the rock kinda attracted you to it ? They say look where you want to go, not what you want to avoid.
All my best for your recovery.

I think pretty much everyone would have chosen the same way through there, mad how it’s always the slow crashes that do the most damage!! Good luck for a speedy recovery.

    Ouch!
When I saw that rock looming the first time watching i had a bad feeling about it.
Thanks for the slo- mo, it really showed how the bike just slid from under you. There was nothing you could have done at that point.
    Glad you're on the mend!

Ouch! I hope you get better soon. I watched the original video, but this one is much more forensic and just shows how simple decisions (left or right?) can have different consequences. Also, how quickly things can unravel. We all probably make thousands of similar decisions on every ride, but this was one time that the outcome wasn't in your favour. Good job you had phone signal, W3W and the ability to call for help.
    Who dealt with your bike?

Get well soon Josh!!! I had a similar crash a couple of years ago where I had the option to go through a shallow stream over some slabs of tarmac or redirect the bike to a point where there was just a patch of water like in your video. The combination of water on a fairly smooth surface and me turning the bike made me fly a long way, fortunately no boulder around!
Now when I see patches of water like those I just make sure to go straight through them with the front wheel and myself perfectly vertical.
I hope the ribs heal soon, take care

A dramatic conclusion to another great trip. It's good to see you are still smiling and keen to get back on the bike. A crash like that could put quite a few people off. It's not just the danger of the crash but the remoteness.

That crash and the screaming is really hard to watch! The pain you must of experienced can't imagine. I always wear mitts, from experience. I was riding home from school and my sports bag strap got jammed in my back wheel. I flew over the handlebars hands first onto recently chipped road. I had a large flap of skin from one side of my palm to the other and about 2 inches deep hanging off both hands. Mitts save your palms if you go down hand first. Take my word from it. Heal up soon Josh.

Really bad luck. Sounds like that whole section was slippery and you were extra unlucky with that rock. I was just glad that you wasn't stuck up a mountain in the pissing rain and cold while waiting a very long time for rescue. Though 20 minutes is more than enough!
I hope to see you keep smiling again soon.

I know the feeling well. I hit a rock and broke 6 ribs whilst riding the tour divide in 2022 near the Canadian/US border. Had to ride a few kms to the border checkpoint then wait in a small town (Eureka) for 2 nights due to the weather then got a ride to Whitefish and stayed in the hospital for one night then stayed in a motel for one week to see if my collapsed lung was repairing itself. Took two months to get back to almost 100% after this accident. A very memorable experience

When you felt the rear wheel slide you may have grabbed a bunch of front brake and locked up the front wheel. A locked front wheel will take the line of least resistance and you're down before you know it. This has happened to me a lot, particularly on icy surfaces.
    Get well soon, Josh!

100% would have gone the same way you did. Looking from the start, it was steep, but as you said, nothing too technical. Unfortunately that's why they call these events 'accidents'. Yes, looking back at it you could have done this that or the other, but you might have ended up harpooned into a tree. The main thing is that you're okay and on the mend. Take it easy fella 👍

Bad luck with the rock and how fell onto it. It certainly did not look that tech, even with go pro not making it look as steep. I guess some types of rock can be really slippery when wet. It did have a sheen to it. Could even be some kind of light algae growth maybe? Like how sea side rocks can be crazy slippery. I recall doing a crossing on my bike to Hilbre Island when the tide was out. The green algae on those rocks - crazy slippery. I made sure to avoid them and get off the bike.

    @ivarbrouwer197 9 місяців тому

It’s indeed the slippery bits, I crashed last year on some a slippery path made of some marble like stones and I totally didn’t see it coming. Normally you see it coming but since you slip out on the back wheel, it sort of comes as a surprise. The boulder is the complicating factor, but the slippery bit is the bit you can learn to avoid, though sometimes even dry surfaces can be quite slippery, especially if all your weight is on it, like on a steep decent.
Next ride in flat and safe Holland?

i think the problem was that you tilted the bike to the right too soon to go around the rock and lost grip (maybe the front tire pressure was a bit high too?)
if you went straight on the left of the rock and started turning after clearing it would be the better decision than going on its right

    Two things...
A: If you can crash there, then anyone can, and it's not just a one in a million chance.... Maybe someone should shove that rock right off the track? Or at least turn it around!?
B: Do you think you managed to get a foot down at any point during the slide? I feel like it could have made a difference, and the reason I generally ride flat pedals.
Third thing!... Really glad you're ok😓

The edge on that rock was brutal. It was always gonna hurt but that edge will have been the main cause of your problems. Pretty sure sure you'd still have broken ribs (I broke ribs on a flat surface), but it's probably the viscousness of the rock that's done the internal damage. Not nice at all. I bet lying in bed is fun! 😵
