Right. Only the slightest difference between the Fender here and the Ibanez on the original....and that difference isn't even the instrument... it's effects and settings. Sco is one of the all time greats.
I met John and Dennis Chambers at The Bayou in WDC when they played with the rest of the Blue Matter/Loud Jazz band when Blue Matter was first released. That show was hot. The whole band came up to the balcony and sat at the table next to us.
With Sco, nothing you can say is enough. The band is stratospheric and together... There weren't many Sco albums in Europe, when I went to the USA all I did was look for and buy everything I could find.
Hmm... There's no one else on the planet who can play like YOU! YOUR voice is unique. When you hear someone who inspires you, just imagine yourself playing "in the zone," and then transmute that into your own playing in your own style. My 2 cents.
Lol, I see Arvi uses the same strap locks as I do. Rubber seals off beer bottles - they work really well. Nice to hear Blue Matter again after all these years.
Dennis is still my favorite drummer, and I really play a mix a thrash metal, classical, and what little jazz fusion I've learned from listening to players like John. But those funky drums and insanely sold grooves of Dennis' are something else. He plays poly-rhythms like other drummers play straight time. It's so natural sounding, like 7 over 4 is just the most obvious thing in the world. I wish it was for me. lols
The hired gun with the Strat is really good at complimenting Scofield and letting him shine. At least I assume he's a hired gun since he's not named in the description. His name is Avi Bortnick by the way.
Well, almost all of Sco's backing musicians have been hired guns, save perhaps Joe Lovano who was/is a marquee name himself, but Bortnick was a founding member of the 2001-2003 era "John Scofield Band" and appeared on the Uberjam and Up All Night records, and came back for the reunion of that band in 2013. So it's not a fleeting relationship, exactly, by the standards of Sco's working bands.
@@fxaarchable yes, ive been wondering if its a heavily modified squier... i woudnt trust a squier to stay in tune using a whammy bar and it got locking tuners
@@zoso2809 Why not? Out of a decent guitar in its core (which doesn't have to be expensive at all) a good luthier or a guitar tech can make you a stage-ready instrument that can withstand hours of playing even under the stage lights. I think they overlapped briefly in Miles' band around 1985? They were born 10 days apart, and Robben hit the national scene a few years ahead of John. John started becoming a "guitarist's guitarist" around 1977, and Robben probably got some exposure to John at some point in the late 1970s. John was almost certainly aware of Robben's work with the L.A. Express and others in the 1970s when John was just starting out with Billy Cobham.
Sorry, but the P-bass tone just doesn't cut it on this song. Gary Grainger and Dennis playing this together will never be outdone. Gary and Dennis playing grooves like this together was the reason I started playing bass when I was ~14. During the summer, I would go to Takoma Station in D.C., stand outside by the side door which would be open during the hot summer, and listen to them groove together from about 6 feet away from them. I'll never forget the two men that inspired me and changed the course of my life when I was just a kid.
Yea, his pocket even with crazy polyrhythms is ridiculously solid. I'm just a guitarist, but sure wish I had pocket like that. Still my favorite drummer since I first heard this album in the 80's.
On the other hand, this shows that John's "Blue Matter" band could have been pretty killer if he'd used a really creative rhythm guitarist instead of a keyboard player. But in the mid-1980s, that "DX7 sound" was $$$$. John made the most of it, but I don't particularly miss it.
I don't have any direct knowledge, and they could be anything, but supposedly the guitar is a K-Line (with an Ibanez sticker on the headstock). Chris Kroenlein (who is K-Line) makes vintage-sounding pickups, though early on I think he was using 3-rd party pickups like Lollars. Long story short, it's possible Sco is using K-Line pickups here, but some super-fan may know more.
there is thematic material in cantloupe Island and this Tune that's alike just the last 3 tones of Herbie's Tune and maybe the 23 for last tones of scofield's tune Inver noticed it just now by listening...(I guess Scofield listened to Herbie's composition and without knowing maybe reproduced(Crimptomnesis=reproducing material you are not aware of) I don't believe he did it on perpose, than it would be a deed of Renaissence, quoting eachother for the better of the Art, and let'be honoust Blue Matter is an astonishing composition maybe a bit mor complex with all respect that Herbie's Cantaloupe Island(but it's Beaty is Well Known still played often composition, I gues a bit more often than Blue Matter(LOL))

Avi Bortnick. Besides his rhythm guitar playing he´s also responsible for triggering various samples and loops via Ableton live on his laptop. You can see this at 7:02.
I guess you haven't heard the Uberjam band? Sco made 3 records with this band (not using Chambers), and Avi plays rhythm guitar and laptop stuff on all of them. It's one of his more popular groups actually.
Wow, this version sounds very weird compared to the original. Don't get me wrong, this rendition is killing. Just sounds different with Sco playing the Ibanez Tele copy and the bassist playing a P-Bass with the vintage amp tones. Kinda reminds me of the Meters gone Jazz-Rock...

What a surprise "Blue Matter" !!! 35 years + and still groovin. Awesome quartet
That was one of my favourite tunes back then!
I love that tone with the Tele style.
When he plays guitar he sounds like.. John Scofield , one and only, but when he speaks he sounds like Jeff Bridges.. :)
“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.”
Looks like him too

holy smokes, good catch!!
Never a boring moment with Sco.
God help me I miss playing shows
John is ridiculously talented
They sound so special. I’ve loved this tune for a long time.
Sco is a genius. By the true sense of the word. Never met him but love him.

Thumbnail pic looks like Sco singing “By the time I Get to Phoenix”. Love John’s playing since the cigarette burned red 335 days. Thanks for this.
The whole band is top shelf plays . Wow man
I was there. They had an insane vibe and the public felt it! Amazing gig

Fantastic! Scofield gives the people what they need!
Dennis "The Menace" Chambers RULES!!!
nearly The Legend Band from 1986..fantastic to Scofield and Chambers again. Nostalgic!!
jazz funk masterpiece ever!

Avi Bortnic killer back ground guitar
3:18 the most minimalistic tapping from Scofield. By the way, I wonder how he could reach that spare pick sitting in the bridge cover when needed.
Same thing I just asked myself. My guess: It just fell in there by accident and sat their through the entire concert.
