Simplex Fire Alarm Test #72

  • Horn test on a Simplex 2001-8001 at a church/school. Panel is a dual bay variant with the bottom half utilizing 2 signal cards. This vid had been in my files for a while so I apologize for any poor quality. For its age the sound & output remains decent on this dinosaur. System trips the fire zone on the buildings security system thus the keypad must be silenced at the end.

      @4050-80 I suspect it's a late-Simplex-2001 setup, like Crotched Mountain school. (continuous) I also saw fast strobes like the cafeteria and near music class (all with '9806s) A slow strobe outside of science class with a '9833. Looks like the same era as the Crotched Mountain group homes as well. (The OP might know something I don't, but it looks like it could be as late as 1985 or 1986, like I think the group homes of CMRC/CMF) I know that when I stayed there, the stuff looked fresh, where I had my first homeroom there and the best teacher, which was next to the cafeteria. The Pierce building is the other building with a janky system, despite same FACP series! That has the library, gym and swimming pool.

    Welcome back SAFETECH. I know you said a while back that your lack of uploading was due to the high security buildings you now worked in. Is that still the reason for your absence of uploads?
    All those alarms seem to be in pretty good health for their age, with the possible exception of that AV-32 & horn at the beginning (which I'm assuming replaced a 2903 + horn); the horn sounds kinda stuttery (& rough) & the light on the AV-32 flickers. I think this is the first system I've seen with strobe 2903s: most other systems seem to have the light variant.
    Huh, don't believe I've ever seen a dual-bay 2001. I've seen single-bay ("Repack") 2001s, as well as large multi-bay 2001s, but I don't think I've ever ever seen one with exactly 2 bays.

      The later-looking systems have that at Crotched Mountain school, both the school buildings. The Pierce building doesn't have the cafeteria and music class, but it has the gym and swimming pools. Also the exercise room, which outside of it, has (or had) a healthy 2903-9101 with a '9806 and one day, I was next to it and it sounded! I think I jumped! Closer to the gym, are rather sickly sounding '9833s (which also seem quiet!) They don't seem to be as loud as the group home '9833s. The '9806 next to the candlepin bowling alley, sounds off to me, but not truly close to dead, TMK. Made me suspect NAC wiring recently. (including a suspiciously quiet early-gen SpectrAlert horn/strobe in the gym, which they seem to only care about the strobe, LOL. The Pierce building is also a "franken-alarm" mix, with Gentex SHGs outside of art class and a Federal Signal 450E in art class. Also an SS MA in a nearby 2903-9101!

    Hello Billy, hope you are doing well. Do you have any way I can contact you directly?
    Just wanted to throw that out there because I am a fire alarm collector who graduated high school last year and I am currently waiting to pursue a career in the fire alarm field once I am able to acquire a vehicle, hopefully eventually working for Simplex at JCI. In addition to fire alarm systems I also have restored several antique radios and other vintage electronics and electrical equipment. I am very knowledgeable in electronics and fire alarm systems have always been a part of that. I am also very passionate towards the Simplex Time Recorder Co. and their history. Preserving these old panels and Simplex devices from being lost to time and meeting their fate with the scrap pile is important to me as so many of them get thrown away as they are upgraded, stripping away part of the history of Simplex along with them. I currently have a Simplex 4001 and a 4010, both good examples and I was fortunate to get to know a tech who was able to save them for me. I have each wired up to their own demo system with a few initiating and notification devices.
    I was wondering if you ever remove old panels from service from time to time such as a 2001, 4002, 4004, or 4005. I am looking to acquire one of these. I would also be interested in something such as a small two bay 4020 or a 4100 classic that could have a few devices programmed into it for me (due to me not having access to program such a panel) I figured someone like you who comes across them would be the best person to ask about acquiring a panel or two and any old devices that get removed or upgraded. I, as well as the rest of your viewers and subscribers, appreciate the time and effort you put into making these test videos considering how busy your job is, and in producing these videos you are also showcasing and preserving these older systems from being forgotten.
    Best wishes to you and your family and thank you for your time with Simplex and continuing to work hard to keep our life safety systems in check and us all safe. Take care and I look forward to future content when you are able to get videos out.
    -Dylan

    Why isn't the Vista Security Keypad not coding the Security Alarm to code 3 when the Vista Security Keypad is in a Fire Emergency mode? Program defect, or the Security Alarm can't do code 3

    What is that horn in 1:43? It sounds like a 120V horn

    love the mix of horns in this, sound like they're running off of fwr however. was that a 2903 light plate in the distance at 0:26?

      @@GaryBeltz Well. The filtered capacitor gets bad and makes it FWR. The 4001 is unknown if it was originally Filtered or FWR

      @@GaryBeltz The older mechanical horns are generally fine with FWR. The 2903's are likely fine except for the increased flash rate. The AV-32, however, looks like it's not handling it well.

    I have been curious, on older systems which is more important, having strobes flash properly or the horns sounding in temporal code. It’s rare to see extra wires run to accommodate both which is why I ask. In my opinion, the 4903 strobe series is one of the only alarms I’m okay with the strobes being coded because in the process, these strobes also synchronize. However, to you or anyone else, what is more important?

      @safetech  3 роки тому

      New applications require temporal however in areas where this doesn’t apply it’s harder to control strobe rate with older xenon strobes. Continuous coding is often an option to achieve the best output.
